New computer suggestions?
« on: August 29, 2009, 06:06:33 pm »
My desktop finally bricked after 6 years. I'm looking for some help about a new computer. Desktop, laptop, PC, or Mac. Aside from Minesweeper, I strictly play console games, so it won't really be a gaming system.

Well, the brand Acer is very good.
My laptop and Desktop are Acers and have served us well even though they are a newer company.
That is just my suggestion.

If you're not doing any PC gaming on it, you really don't need much at all. Watching any movies? Video/photo editing? Rendering? CAD? What you want in a computer can vary on what you want to do with it.

The only reason to get a laptop is if you're actually going to use it as a laptop. Like taking it with you and using it everywhere, instead of just at your desk/whatever. If you would actually do that, no reason not to go with a laptop.

As for brands..Acer's actually been around in the US since the 90's. I definitely recommend their stuff, as well as Asus.

Out of curiousity, what's wrong with your computer?  I might buy it if it's something I can salvage and the specs and price are right.  I don't play anything made since 2002, so I'm solid on gaming. :D

As Trumby said, the "right" computer for you depends on what you'd use it for.  Just internet, word processing, occasional spreadsheets, and minesweeper?  A $200 dell desktop will do fine.  Looking for portability without high specs?  Get a netbook.  Looking for audio recording?  Get a Auzentech sound card and as much RAM as you can, and use linux.  If you're not gaming and you know how to use a computer, use linux.

I say go non-proprietary system. They are cheaper and easier to upgrade, and you won't have to buy a whole new system when it finally bricks. A new hard drive, and a fresh mother board, and voila! a brand new computer!

You mean you aren't going to download any unlicensed fansubs of your favorite anime? What's wrong with you?!? j/k.

ok, seeing as how it's not really a gaming pc and more for just surfing the web and such, you want intell for the processor, because AMD is pretty much faster when doing one or two things, which is good for those who do gaming, but bad for those who like multitasking while on the computer. If your not doing designs like pictures or anything that involves media, than steer clear of mac's, because you'll be spending to much for features your not really going to use. I would recommend getting a decent computer in case you want to do things like at least play wow. Let's see, I would also recomend a laptop because although their not great for gamers, it will work for you, and you can take it anywhere. Now, depending on price as well should help you decide on what to get... Here's a website that will sell you decent pc's for a cheaper price than place's like wal-mart (which stay away from wal-mart when it come's to computers, because otherwise, you'll be screwed):

because AMD is pretty much faster when doing one or two things,

LIES!!  Look at the bench marks, amd hasn't been able to compete in years.

If all it is for is surfing the net, you can get a netbook with built in 3G now that becomes cheap cheap with a data plan.

AMD Died when they didnt keep up with the Core 2's. AMD Athlon 64 was its last charge.

As for what happened to those dell commercials, the spokes man was arrested for possession of marijuana and got fired.

DUDE!

The main electrician here is named Del. So I tell my boss, after something electrical goes wrong, "Dude!, You got a Del!"

Actually, I have a question for here.

Is there another way to find out what kind of motherboard is on a particular computer aside from reading very fast on start-up, or tearing apart the computer?

SiSoft Sandra and EVEREST Home for sure; Speedfan and CPU-Z might be able to do it.  All of them should be able available in free forms on http://www.download.com.

Cool, thanks, looks like I'll try the CPU-Z. Free is a very good price! Then maybe motherboard.org can help me figure out what I can do to get things feeling much better now.

I'd say no to HP. Never again, will I do that to myself.

I may start collecting parts, and build myself a Home Theater system.
