New forum code of conduct
« on: August 31, 2009, 04:52:59 am »
We've added a new code of conduct to the forums. The old one served us well, but the new one more precisely and accurately reflects our current needs.

The new code of conduct is pinned in this forum area. Here is a direct link:

http://www.kumoricon.org/forums/index.php?topic=11025.0

It's very short, so all forum users should read it. Most of the rules are very common across Internet forums and I don't believe there are any surprising changes that will catch people off-guard.

Thanks!

Since I know it'll come up, can you declare a recommended size for images included in one's signature?

On Tom's note, I would also suggest you do something similar for avatars.

ya, put up the size you want the pics for both avatar and sig, that way we don't over do it.

I must confess I don't have an exact size yet, but for now I'm going to leave it to judgment. There is also the possibility that the content's subjective "annoyingness" could play an influence if the avatar or signature is considered borderline violating the rule on "tasteful and reasonable in size".

But, to provide some idea, if your avatar is greater than 200KB, and signature around 300KB, it's probably too big. (Most are far smaller.) Generally avatars should be limited to around 150px in width or height.

Thanks Jeff.

Hey Leon Masteries, how tall are your sig pics? Those are nice and wide without ruining the flow of the page.
We should tell people to keep it "around that size", and also to not have to much flickery animation in case of eplieptic forumites.

the width is 652 and the height is 219, and I used macromedia fireworks on that... That's for my sig. If you want the height and width for my avatar, just ask.

So we'll just say that you shouldn't go over 300x800 that should keep most people's screens intact.
It could go wider for newer monitors but I'm on a pretty old one at work right now and it still looks OK.

Thanks for the update!

Jeff, they've gone mad! Look at the size of Wahougal Otaku's sig pic!
 :o IT'S HUGE! :o
It's only a matter of time before someone puts a full page screen cap in their signature just to mess with people!

Sigs and avatars have not been a problem.  If someone doesn't know their size is annoying someone will probably tell them and they will change it.  This is a creative fun group of forum users we have on this site, for the most part, the people on this site don't have intention to disrupt our public.  Those few that do will be easily found and dealt with, I don't think we need a set rule on size.  Though a recommendation is okay.

does width really matter much, i mean once you have the height if you only use so much you just have blank space

Width does not matter, I have seen some really nice looking full width sigs on here.

Well, stuff over 650 pixels wide would probably stretch screens set to 800x640, which is probably the smallest resolution you'll encounter on any computer that can run the internet, so I'd say keep it under 650 wide and you're fine.

Yep!

I had to do a double take at 800x640 since that's such an odd aspect. Turns out that's the size of the EEE PC screens.

Yeah, it's a 5:4 ratio (which I believe was the standard back when monitors weighed more than computers) instead of the typical 4:3 ratio (800x600 whoo!) that you get with a lot of current displays.  Not as crazy as the wacky widescreen ratios you see like the PSP's 480x272 (30:17) or the more common but still kind of wacky 1024x600 (128:75) setting, which is what the display that I'm using right now is set to.

Anyway, I know I sort of spawned it, but let's try to keep the discussion to questions and comments regarding the current forum code of conduct.
