Cosplay-Themed Fashion!
« on: September 10, 2009, 11:33:11 pm »
I'm a senior this year and all seniors are required to do something called a Senior Seminar Experience, or SSE. For mine I have a few ideas and one of them went something like this; designing clothing around cosplay. For instance, Zidane's from FFIX's wristcuffs. Instead of those giant things, a shrunk and slightly altered design to turn them into wristbands. Or Aerith's; make a dress themed after her that you could wear every day, not just in a cosplay setting. Earrings shaped like the Buster Sword, a Link's Tunic-themed shirt, etc.

Is it a good idea to design these things and sew them together for my project? Like casual, but clothes geared towards the alternative and for cosplayers who don't want to cosplay all the time, but would still love to wear simplified pieces of their character. Or different/changed versions.

Other things could include a full-length Kimono reminescent of Yuna, a Homonculus get-up that you could wear to school, etc. Not exactly cosplaying, but everyday clothing patterned after cosplays. ^^

I think it's a brilliant idea (since I actually had thought this up and been wanting to do it personally a couple years ago).

Good luck with it. ^_^

It sounds like it could be really cool. It is something I have wanted to do with accessories, mostly. Like, making character accessories and props into properly-functional accessories and clothing items.

Yeah, that's what I had in mind. And things like character, themed PJs and whatnot too~

Hey, I could design and make them for people on here to! Or they could be my models if I decide to add a runway piece to my project! xD

I'm sure you'd have a lot of volunteers if you did do a runway aspect. ^_^

Or even needed models for photos, heh

This is a cool idea! I'm actually wearing my belt from my Kairi cosplay to work these past few days... I don't have the straps on it though (as I only have one that doesn't have the purse on it...) but I totally would!

There's also "stealth cosplay" - wearing actual full cosplay outfits from characters whose clothing looks like regular clothes. I wore Sawako-sensei's yellow dress (from K-On) to Mass on Sunday and it was clearly mistaken for an ordinary dress rather than cosplay. Of course, as soon as I returned to Kumoricon, many people recognized the outfit, but on the streets of Portland, it was just a yellow dress.

Other stealth cosplay possibilities
   * Blue dress that Rukia from Bleach wears
   * Yellow dress that Asuka from Evangelion wears
   * most any outfit that you see the characters wearing when they're not in their school uniforms.  :D

I think it's a brilliant idea.  I'm a designer too, and have been adding little "pieces" to my wardrobe for a while now. The buster Sword earings sound devine ;D It's like "Hi, I'm showing off my fan side in every day life!!"

I'm in the medical feild, and one of these days I really want to make cosplay inspired scrubs...I hate scrubs >.>

Go for it, take lots of pictures too!!  Runwayidea sounds fun too.

And for the Stealth, Persona 3 when SEES is on their off time, have great "normal" costumes as well.

This sounds really cool. I would totally love to either be your model or actually buy it! Since I'm one of the weirder people who actually wears my cosplays to school and stuff, it'd be nice to have simular things but look normaler...

xDD Thanks for the ideas! I was thinking of making a couple stealth cosplay to put into it too, but everyday versions and things of characters that you couldn't wear normally around, like Ciel, Cloud, Garnet, Humunculi, etc. xD I'f love to show my fanside in everyday life too, and I love designing clothing, so...

I'll talk to me SSE instructor person on Monday about it and draw up some ideas; If my mom let's me use the scanner, I'll show them to you guys! ^^

Though finding a community consultant will be hard for this one >.< Stupid school guidelines. xD

As someone who thought SSE project was a joke, because lets face it it IS, I would still give you a tip on getting your idea approved.  If you are going to to be making some sort of clothing, adding the sale or a public show (fashion, how to) of some sort, that you record, into the project.  Just making clothing wont get your idea approved, but if you go one step further, it would be a great project.  Personally I think turning anything that deals with making/reviewing clothing is super easy to throw into a teaching class you host to others in the community or a public/school fashion show displaying everything you or a group of cosplayers made would work.  Hope you have fun with your project, it was a drag for me, but that's probably because I hated high school my last 2 years :D

Thanks! xD And they no longer require needing to 'benefit the community' or whatever for everyone, but I was planning a fashion show of some sort if I get it approved.

I'm glad this topic came up, because cosplay made me love fashion! I always try to wear clothes that remind me of cosplay, and I try to integrate cosplay pieces into my wardrobe. You tempt me to put up pictures of outfits that I wear and my grandma asks me if they're costumes.

But it would be super cute. x3 I've seen some regular hoodies turned into Organization jackets... I'm probably going to end up making one. xD They're so cute.
