I was looking over the bylaws http://www.kumoricon.org/files/bylaws/drafts/2009-08-19-000/bylaws-committee_draft.html, which I believe are now in effect.

Are nominations merely a formality at this point, or are they still required?  Who may nominate whom?

While I had a long drive that evening and couldn't stay even until closing ceremonies, I am interested in the elections.  A few historical quotes and paraphrases come to mind.

“No one should run un-opposed.” - Brownie (Bronwyn Williams)
'Things too big to fail should be split apart' - General sentiment in the aftermath of recent economic events.
'Backups should be made, and tested; regularly.' - Generic system administration documentation.

Nominations are not specifically addressed by the bylaws. The bylaws merely require that any candidate can be elected by write-in and no decision or policy of the board can prevent this.

Nominations are useful because it addresses who will appear on the ballots, who is given speaking time, and other procedural matters.

As for these quotes, please elaborate, because I'm not sure what point(s) you are trying to make.

2020-2022: Assistant Secretary, Website Development Coordinator

2015: Assistant Secretary

All three share a general theme.  That when something is important there should be more than one single point of failure.

Multiple candidates,
Dividing sensible portions of labor among multiple individuals so that where one might hit a dead end the other can see a solution,
Backups (like successfully happened this year when Mike's (paying) job unexpectedly took him out of the country and Beau became the chair).

They are also what I hope will inspire everyone who isn't yet on this list to consider doing what I am now doing.

While there are reasons I should not be a director of Publicity:
  • Currently unemployed and seeking work; I've no idea where I'll be living or what I'll be doing next September.
  • I'm currently living (moved back to my childhood home, literally) about 3 hours away from Portland; I'd prefer to telecommute to most meetings if possible.  To conserve both time and resources.
  • I might best describe my self as a technical solution specialist.

There are also reasons I should run as a director of Publicity:
  • Ensuring that no one runs opposed.
  • I know the three main categories of tasks a Director should perform: making decisions (including who to assist with work), delegating work as fairly and efficiently as possible, ensuring that deadlines are met (including re-delegation and for super-critical tasks, possibly even duplication).
  • I plan to extensively delegate entire sets of tasks, and track soft and hard deadlines.  The Promotions Manager and Publications Manager would be extensively responsible for those areas of the department,  and I would ensure that they had primary understudies selected and ready to step up as backups should the dreaded 'hit by a bus' or 'sent to China for a year' happened.
  • Finally there are many things I have felt that the website should do to empower the convention through improved coordination and communication.  If elected I would compile a draft of desired improvements and resources; ranking by priority after discussion among the board as a whole to produce a working result, and dividing out the tasks among the Publicity staff.

With these points in mind, I gladly say that I would also like to run for the position of Publicity Director.  I look forward to helping the convention through that department, as a director or development staff/coordinator/manager.

There being no restriction in our bylaws or procedures against it, self-nomination is certainly legitimate.
A second is not required for nomination, though it is customary and shows support.
It is also safe to assume that one who self-nominates also accepts the nomination.

Michael, welcome to the ballot.

So this is one of those funky new by-laws things, I like it =P

Better than one trying to nominate themselves and being embarrassed when they couldn't. (See me the meeting before the Con Chair/Ops Special for 2009)

2008 - Operations Office Staff
2009 - Assistant Ops Director
2010 - Director of Operations
2011 - Registration Manager
2012 - Vice Chair
2013 - I can safely say that I'm not running for a board position :D

Thank you.  I'm really honored, but I must decline.

I still have some things I want to put in place for the Secretary position long-term, and it would not be fair to the Con or to my successor if I tried to be the Chair while still focusing on (and meddling with) Secretary.

I hope you'll keep me in mind for a couple years down the line, though  ;D

I wouldn't mind losing a race to Jo, I know how capable she is.
And now I'm a catgirl?
