Was it just me or were people scared to death of the street people?

lol at the title.

I didn't notice people being too freaked out by the well-meaning vagrants of our kind and sketchy streets. I found the street musicians refreshing, on the rare occasion that I actually had a few minutes to spare listening to them. Then again, I might be biased in that I may be making my living as a street musician this fall.

I wasn't freaked out or anything, just mildly annoyed. I don't like being asked for change every block and around every corner. It seemed like word got out that there was a lot of kids over by the Hilton and they all just flocked to that area.

I felt a bit uneasy because a few of them ruined our shoot by touching our clothes and grabbing props. They were definitely in everyone's personal space.
Outside of the hotel, some of them were mildly offensive but a few of them didn't bother me at all.

At first, I read the title wrong, LOL... It was ok... I wasn't expecting them panhandling @ every corner though. What scared me were the drunk/under the influence people loitering around in the evening. I just wanted to get food and get back to hotel asap....

I'm pretty chill with the vagrants, usually they don't bug me and I don't bug them... I'm even familiar or an acquaintance with a few who are pretty consistent with their turf.

Working Saturday Market had its perks.

But there were a few sketch ones that I would have preferred to not bump into, like the gal who charged with a shopping cart at the other vagrant.
Either way, no harm no foul.

Around mid sunday is when I noticed a good amount of them migrating towards the hilton. None of them really bugged me, thought it was kinda surreal to see Rorshach standing on the street corner playing music with em.

All and all I thought it was good. Last year if I recall right someone left their bag unattended in the park and a hobo snatched it. I was kinda surprised we didn't see more police around the hilton.

Actually I saw a lot of police between 12pm and 2 am on Saturday around the Hilton and Pioneer Square. I encountered at least 4 different officers and saw quite a few cars... that said they really didn't do anything besides ask con goers not to swing props around.

I have an MSW from PSU and worked in a medical clinic for homeless folks for 7 years. I was an activist for homeless rights for years. I've lived houseless (e.g., in a tent at the Buddhist Retreat Center last summer). I have had tons of friends who have been homeless, and, notoriously, I even awarded a prize at one (non-Kumoricon) convention to someone, 3rd place in an art contest, who turned out (I found out afterward but did not rescind the prize) to have wandered in, homeless, just to keep warm and safe, and picked up our art supplies and drew and colored a piece.
So I would definitely say I am way more comfortable with homeless people than most.
And yet I must admit. It was a little unnerving, walking up the many, many stairs to the PSU dorm where I was staying, 10 blocks from the hotel, alone, at 4 in the morning, in Luna Lovegood cosplay, with my purse and suitcase, while a street dweller who was swinging (rather than leaning on) a cane was having an angry fight..with himself...

I went there last summer with a large group of friends and their parents, and there was one guy who was ranting on and on about gay sex, and another guy who jumped out from behind a bush and made us all scream... T_T

Maybe it's just where I live, but hobos are only too common. I'm not bothered by them anymore, even the creepers who talk to the telephone poles.
Most of them are just a little down on their luck, or living a natural lifestyle.

Reminds me at a gig I played on August 7th at Satyricon. From 5:30 to 8:00, there was a homeless man who would calmly walk along, then bark at people as he passed them. I found that I just had to look him at the eye and nod at him, and he stopped barking at me for the rest of the night. Some of these people will do obscure things simply because they have no social stature to be lost.

I admit that I find the street muscians to be a refreshing addition to downtown Portland. I haven't met any real freaky hobos yet. Hopefully it'll stay that way.

I'm not from Oregon, or the city at all doods, so just seeing them watching me as I walked along was a bit more than creepy doods. Street preformers, they're cool, but when a group of homeless stops talking and watches me, and even calls out to me, its enough to make me move faster away doods. Especially when they call out "Hey, you scared?" which is what I hard more than anything else from them towards me doods.

I only had a couple of encounters with them, since I didn't cross the street more than a few times. My only real encounter was actually kind of amusing. I was dressed as Link, and the street saxophonist asked me to hum a few notes of the Zelda theme. I did, and he played it as I jaunted down the street.

Then a bunch of other excited bums started calling me "Zelda."

That was a little annoying, but whatever...

The homeless around the hotel seemed harmless enough I guess, but you never can be too sure. I know there this girl from Vancouver, WA that was raped by a homeless person when she was cutting through a field. It was only like a year or so ago. I don't think it's particularly unreasonable to be cautious.

My brother gave one of them some money since he was begging, and the guy immediately turned around and used it to buy drugs. My brother didn't say anything, just kind of gave him a look like, "Really?"

True. It really helps to stay in big groups, though, which is a good thing since it's a steady stream of people on the street throughout most of the con...

It's always a good idea around the homeless to be friendly..but cautious. A little caution now and again will keep you safe I say.
