Yay, I'm not the only one who knows the difference between blond and blonde.

However, ending sentences with a preposition is something I am guilty of. xP

blonde / blond :
The grammatical gender should match the sex of the person. If you write 'the blond I saw on the bus'  I know up-front it's a man or a boy. If you later write that the 'blond' was a girl, I now know you write like an idiot. See also premier vs premiere - a different rule applies and it's another great check on if the writer is paying attention to the words he is writing.

Hey dip-wad: 'There is' means you are going to indicate ONE of something or an uncountable amount of stuff; another reason why they as a singular sounds jarring to me.

Yes, that is technically correct, however, "there are" doesn't roll off the tongue as quickly as one might think, and so "there's" became commonly accepted for pluralized objects and concepts.

Prinz Eugen, whatever you do, do not study Old English. lol Seriously double negatives were exceedingly common. Repetition denoted degree. Also, basically the grammar structure more closely resembles Ebonics than it does to modern English. Oh, and you axed a question. Ask was not invented yet.

But on the bright side, and and an were in use 1,000 years ago. An dates all the way back to ancient Sanskrit, and is still in use in south Asia.

I gave up most of my grammar nazi-ness back when I was in the navy. I seem to have saved it for when Anglophones attempt to speak French now. Then after my nerves get over the fingernails on the chalkboard feeling, I just let it go. lol

I adore this thread and I think it needs to be resurrected. Especially because I am seeing people use the wrong 'there', 'they're' and 'their' more than ever!!!!

I will agree that usually (There are circustances where this isn't quite true.) it's not a good idea to start a sentence off with a conjumction. My grammar I admit isn't the greatest but I do my best to avoid it whenever possible.

French uses "fore-and-aft" negative markers too, and they sort-a 'invited themselves over' into the English realm for about 350yrs, starting with William of Normandy, 1066.

I like how Japanese uses the mathematical equivalent - you can concatenate any number of negatives; you just have to multiply through to see whether you end up heads or tails.
Mom: "Didn't you finish your homework?" Schoolkid: "Yes." (yes, he did NOT finish.)

They also "collect like terms" (if you remember that from algebra) into long adjectival clauses ahead of nouns. I have trouble with that sometimes because when the noun finally hits you have to go back and apply all that other stuff onto it and untangle it on the fly.
I even find German easier, wherein the verb from the noun by a clause, which a sub-clause include may separated is, and then on the end is put.
