Grammar is Awesome
« on: October 23, 2009, 11:41:23 pm »

Though I'm not as bad as most grammar nazi's, it really grinds my gears to see a paragraph with RUN ON SENTENCES AND NO COMMAS (ASDJFAKISJFOAF). I'm pretty bad at typing a proper response too (which is why with most of my posts, I have to edit them 3 times before I'm happy with it). You don't have to take what I say to heart at all! But, I'd just like to point out it's a lot easier to read something like what I typed...

OMG guys today I went to the store and I bought some cabbage and then I washed it it was so delicous that I put it in a stew and ate it with a spoon it tasted like someone stabbed a shard of glass into my tounge and everyone knows that its the best feeling in the whole either world lololololololololololol

...then something like that.

SOME HELPFUL TIPS FROM SOMEONE WHO SUCKS AT SPELLING AND TYPING:

1. Firefox has spell check and it's amazing.

2. If you can't say your sentence without taking a breath, you need some kind of punctuation in there.

3. PROOF READING DECREASES CHANCES OF YOU LOOKING STUPID :D

Anyways, that's all I wanted to say. Anyone else really hate this? Anyone.....:'D?

The best thing in the world is seeing a literal wall of text with little to no punctuation. I'm not going to claim to be 100% correct, but people should at least make things legible!

Please add a period to the end of your subject line. It makes you look ignorant or ironic. I don't believe this thread was meant to be either. ;)

Actually, Tom, the subject line is a title, and therefor should not have a period at the end by any means.  That said, most of the posts in this thread have at least one grammatical, spelling, or punctuation error by MLA writing standards.  Nobody here is saying that we need to meet MLA standards though, only that posts should be punctuated such that they can be understood without being processed extensively and deciphered by the reader.

Standards change as the times change, though. Some things that were inappropriate in the past are now grammatically acceptable. It used to be wrong to start a sentance with "and", "but", "yet", or any other words that begin a compound sentance. Another thing that bugs me is when people people list off objects and don't put a comma between the last two items, like this, and this, and this and this.
Oh, and please don't say funner or nucular. T_T

@ Jaz- I've seen your posts and you make an effort to punctuate, which is all I'm really griping about. So live and be free like a little bird~

@Tom- Oh god, snickerdoodles...HI JAZ LETS BE FRIENDS. :D

@Dshwshr- FUNNER MAKES ME RAGE LIKE THE FIST OF THE NORTH STAR.

But yeah just to reiterated my point. I'm not telling everyone to be perfect with their posts, I'd be a hypocrite if I did. Basic punctuation just makes posts less of an eyesore to get through.

Even if they don't, now I can I "I warned ya" and won't feel bad showing posts among my friends and having a good laugh at the stupidity and complete laziness. :P

Ooh! I believe this is the "Oxford comma" and is debated by English professors. So people are sometimes taught to do that.

I am not a fan of the term "drownded".
I'm more lenient with the use of "nucular" because I thought that it and "nuclear" were two separate terms until I was set straight in college. I thought cells could be nuclear but bombs were nucular. Now I don't do that anymore. Yay for learning.  :P

Because of my easy going nature I'm not super nit picky when it comes to grammar and spelling. Truth told I'll admit I'm not the world's greatest expert on grammar and spelling, I'm actually a moderate. As in I demand that people's spelling and grammar be legible enough that I can actually comprehend what they're communicating.

I know my grammar sucks, and my spelling is bad. I am trying to improve, but it's hard for me since I was never taught it well enough. I was behind in class, but at the time teachers didn't pull me out and do any one on one. So I was forced to mover forward when I wasn't ready to. Again though, I am working on getting better.

infact, when I put this in Words, I had spelt 3 words wrong. Improve was imbrove, forced was fourced, and forward was foward. Even with Words though my grammar is still not correct a lot of the time.

Although I am also guilty of being a human & making mistakes, I do find it hard to read a post with no punctuation. Without some form of punctuation, you can't really read a sentence how it was meant to be if spoken...nobody talks that way. However, I do understand that not everyone is educated in proper grammar & I don't make it a point to correct them unless it is truly awful. Even in those situations, I am in no way attacking them, instead I feel as though I'm helping them get their point across & I do so very politely. As I stated above, I am also human & I make my fair share of mistakes as well...I am harder on myself than anyone.

In a nutshell, post & have fun everyone. If I can't understand a post due to bad grammar then it was that person who failed. But honestly, I rarely see anyone that is so bad that I don't understand the point they are trying to get across.

Verily, I have been taken aback with such a level of surprise that I find myself unable to properly express myself, such that a whole sentence would be nigh impossible, so I must pour as much emotion into three letters as I can.

I'm coming out of the closet on this one ...
« Reply #45 on: December 19, 2009, 12:09:35 pm »
I am a closet Grammar Nazi.

I have LOTS of Peeves (and not pets either, these are commercial-sized livestock.)

First, if you want to see what morons are writing
nowadays, visit HERE: http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/

Oodles of fun except when you see morons getting into powerful positions,
like people who wrote "ANNUAL REPORT OF THE LIGHT-HOUSE BOARD OF THE
UNITED STATES TO THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY FOR THE PHYSICAL
YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 1872. (Margoliss & Moss fine books, accessed Nov 23, 2008)"

Someone with that kind of influence on spending non-trivial amounts of other people's money should know the term fiscal year, or be FIRED and replaced with someone who DOES know.

Some of my other personal peeves are:

blonde / blond :
The grammatical gender should match the sex of the person. If you write 'the blond I saw on the bus'  I know up-front it's a man or a boy. If you later write that the 'blond' was a girl, I now know you write like an idiot. See also premier vs premiere - a different rule applies and it's another great check on if the writer is paying attention to the words he is writing.

'THEY' used as a singular in writing :
Take a risk and use 'he' and 'his' as was used as recently as 40 years ago, just for spice. It's still correct, and really not sexist at all. My 5th edition of Strunk & White's style Manual of Style sezz it's okay to use, so I'm game. 'Man' and mankind' are also still correct terms for the set containing all peoples.

"For Free" :
No, moron. You can get something free, or for nothing. 'For free' just makes you sound stupid. See also: "Free Gift!" in written and spoken advertisements. Hey stupid, if it's not free, it's ummm not a gift, right? Duh.

"There's three things I want to show you..." :
Hey dip-wad: 'There is' means you are going to indicate ONE of something or an uncountable amount of stuff; another reason why they as a singular sounds jarring to me.

Its and it's :
Get them right or die. The possessive does NOT take the apostrophe. You will also be shot for using the apostrophe to form plural nouns or worse, to form the third person singular tense.

Trying to sound edjimicationalized by sneaking extra syllables
into words to make it sound like you know how to use longer
words than you can really handle :
"Orientate' for orient or align, 'Finalize' for finish, pre-planning and 'pre-condition,' (hint: planning already has to happen in advance of the event being planned, right?) I even once heard electronical.

Ending sentences with prepositions :
This rule was made up in the 19th century, but it's still a good gauge. Listening for whether or not a speaker can rearrange word order on the fly is an indicator of the presence or lack of other sorts of mental flexibility. Think of this as a real-time IQ test.

FLOUNDER :
News flash - that's a fish. You can eat them, too. When something is dropping, failing to stand up, sinking, or taking water over the gunwhales, the word you should use is founder.

Lastly, two hilarious books to read if you enjoy peevery are "Strictly Speaking," and "A Civil Tongue," by Edwin Newman, who headed the usage panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. Dry, acerbic, and incisive wit abounds.

^ A lot of that sounds pretty harsh to me. Things like the difference of 'blond' and 'blonde' aren't common knowledge to everyone. I think it's idiotic to insult people just because they don't know trivial grammar tidbits.

Relax - no personal or targeted affronts intended. Most of the times where I am using "Hey dipstick," etc in the above, that is only what's going on in my head as I read. I would never direct such invective at any specific person, in my real-world speaking or writing. But that's some of what I think about while reading, and so I wrote about it.

You are correct; internally I am usually a harsh judge about what I read - especially if the writer is any kind of a paid professional. They're supposed to be better than us, right?

Also the whole concept of 'grammar nazi' is hyperbole, so I hope that when I write 'get it right or die,' this is seen as part of the exaggeration, and obviously not a real-world threat to anyone. It's all just part of the bombastic fun of the topic.

Also, here's a question: most students in school encounter a foreign language like Spanish, French, German, or Latin, where grammatical genders are more fully functional than modern day English. Wouldn't that the lead to a curiosity about where the 'e' came from when we read something like 'Ye Olde [whatever] Shoppe?'

Your thoughts?

I don't point out other people's flaws on forums or mailing lists.

Sometimes I will correct a typo in the box quoting someone else.

Once in a while I will 'over-correct' for amusement value or to see if anyone notices.
One time on a thread about music and songs I wrote Lincoln Park, and no one caught it.

Some things that were inappropriate in the past are now grammatically acceptable. It used to be wrong to start a sentence with "and", "but", "yet", or any other words that begin a compound sentance. Another thing that bugs me is when people people list off objects and don't put a comma between the last two items, like this, and this, and this and this.
I still get a slight jar out of reading a sentence beginning with 'And,' or 'But.'

And* here's another peeve: saying 'and plus' for emphasis. Pick either of the words, stress it as you speak it, and you'll do fine.

*Tee hee!
