Can someone enable full ignore lists so as to hide posts from particular users at a user's request? This would reduce much, if not all of the drama on this forum.

wouldn't that mean you'd just ignore EVERYONE's posts?

It's already implemented and in use on the Playground. In SMF forums it's one checkbox and no deliberation away. Go tell JeffT to turn it on so that I won't be so angry at 20% of this forum.

Ingore lists will just lead to more drama and problems.

Consider the following potential example:
"Dude, why won't anyone answer my question?"
"Three people did."
"Oh, they must be on my ignore lists."

This forum is not about creating exclusive little clubs within the forum. Posts that don't fit our guidelines are modified or deleted. Repeat problem causers are banned. If you cannot handle 20% of the posters on this forum, you might want to take a break.

As one of the active mods here, I do not want to have to deal with lots of people whose feelings are hurt by being blocked by people. Keep in mind some of our posters are young and/or not used to public message boards. Sometimes it takes a while for them to figure out how to communicate effectively online. Sometimes they are unaware of the impression they create. I think that the majority of our forums goers tend to be forgiving of people's various quirks and awkward ways of talking and do thier best to play nice. It's one of the things I like about our forums.

Also, if you are having conflicts with people, stating publically that 20% of the people here make you angry is not likely an effective way to resolve those problems. Just like ingore lists, posts like this make people wonder if they are one of the ones who are disliked.

Yeah... other wise I'd never be able to work on recovering from

I believe that ignore lists encourage more antisocial behavior than they prevent. I'm siding with the mods on this one.

And now I'm going to be watching all the people who wanted ignore lists a little more carefully.

This is my opinion too, and with ALL the problems inherent in online communication, ignore lists would just add MORE drama :/

Truth told I'm not so sure an ignore list is such a hot idea. It may seem good at first but it also has the potential to be abused by less social people or those who have an agenda of their own. It seems to me an ignore list here would be a double edged sword that could cut both ways.

On another SMF forum, I block dumb people. I see their post body, but the text is hidden and a link that says "You are ignoring this person. Show the text of their post." Thus, I am aware that people I don't want to talk to post, and it's not hard for me to see their post, I just rather I didn't.

Would you like to see a screenshot? I think this post invalidates a lot of arguments.

As you can see, I am still aware this person posted, and if I choose to, I can view their content. I am aware of them now, but having their content on my screen is not mandatory.

But this isn't the Playground- this is the Kumoricon forums. I do not think the K-con forum needs one because (like other people have said) an ignore list would just create more problems than it theoretically solves.

I cannot at all see how it would cause more problems. It was created to END problems. So that if there is someone whom you KNOW will start trouble then you don't have to deal with it.

Really? What's going to happen? Someone on your ignore list will get mad about it and b*** at you..ooh wait you can't see what they're saying.

This has been answered previously and will be answered again. We will not enable the ignore list function. You dont like it, tough.

Its like walking into someone elses house and then demanding that you be exempt from their rules. not going to happen.

Yep, I'll lock this thread now.

Also, it appears our version of the forum software doesn't even support the feature. When the final version of SMF 2.0 is released (currently it is release candidate stage), it would become an option.

Even then, I think the drawbacks outweigh the positives. I'm aware that the post is shown as a stub--so you know there is a missing post and can read it easily--but even still, there is the potential for drama and problems and I don't see blocking individual users as important enough.

Since I can't say that we will never enable this feature, if somebody wants to discuss it in the future, please wait 6 months before starting a new thread on it (there is also the option of contacting an administrator privately if you want to discuss it sooner, though it's unlikely we'll change our mind in the near future).
