Author Topic: How can I found out what is wrong if I can't even stay conscious? (Read 3625 times)

I went to the doctors today and I wanted to get some blood work done so I could possible find out if I have low iron or not. Well I thought I have low iron because I failed the iron test when I tried to donate blood and when I did pass it and after I was done donating blood I was very dizzy. I also had to do a little blood work when I was at the dermatologist and got dizzy again. Well I tried again today and apparently I passed out twice x.x I don't even remember passing out. So how am I supposed to find out if I have low iron if I can't even get blood drawn?

:osounds like not enough blood/oxygen circulating well enough, but i'm no doctor

I once had blood drawn and passed out because the lady did the band wrong and oxygen wasn't getting to my head, then she pulled on the needle and it ripped a chunk of my arm out from the vaccuum it'd created. I'm not saying that happend to you... but anyways, I just hope you get it figured out soon.

Not sure how I will do it. The doctor said it happens a lot and it could be from my lower blood pressure.

I know a lot of people who can't give blood/pass out from giving blood because of lack of iron, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Get some Iron supplements and I think you'll be good.

I have the same problem, only I pass out every time I get blood drawn, mainly because I don't eat a lot so I don't have the iron I need. So that could be whats wrong. Then again I also have Aichmophobia, a fear of needles. -_-; Yeah but deffinatly try taking some pills, it helped me a lot with my iron problem.

low in blood? you needs some red meat I recomend rib eye or sirloin!

also this is somthing to consider (going to use small print here as is a girly thing)
when feeling light headed or when you have gone in for giving blood, has it been around you period? Because that blood loss could be contributing to it. I always crave red meat around that time

From someone that sees this stuff rather regularly (lots of people HATE blood draws and get dizzy/faint) I have a few suggestions...

1. For checking to see if you have anemia, maybe you should do a fingerstick hematocrit? That checks your iron levels in your blood with just a finger prick.

2. Did they have you lie down when they took your blood? Next time you go to get it done, I would mention to the person doing it to ask if it's okay if you lay down, and try to talk to the person doing it. It'll keep your mind off what's going on...most phlebotomists and MA's do blood draws so often we're actually quite good at it. You might not even know when we've started and when we've finished.

No they didn't have me lie down. That was the suggestion for next time. I guess I will have to wait till next week before I can do it again though.

*covers eyes* I would probably hide in my closet if I had to get my blood drawn that many times.

I am TERRIFIED of needles and it's a struggle with the nurse everytime.

Supplements are a really good way to go with low iron, I've been anemic almost all my life, not now, but I'm severely vitamin D deficient.

Make sure to eat something before you take vitamins/supplements though, I don't know if it's the same for everyone but I throw them up when I don't eat first.

I'm anemic and have low blood pressure and it does suck. I'm just really good at knowing when I'm about to pass out, and i have a few things that help counter act it. It just takes some getting used to, and Its really not all that bad. i guess ;;>_>

I can't give blood and when i lose even a little i pass out, and standing up to fast makes me pass out; SO The best thing to do is be somewhat slow and steady about things when going from inactive to active, and EAT A STEAK before you do sports

Liver and onions!

Collard greens, beet greens, kale, spinach, all are very good in iron and other minerals.

Boost your blood pressure by eating salt. Sodium raises b.p.

Eat period. Too low a blood sugar from not eating can cause fainting. Also will help your body to store fat when you do eat!

How are you now?
Stay hydrated too.
When I'm dizzy I often am sleep-deprived, oxygen-deprived (better after inhaler), or in need of electrolytes e.g., sodium/potassium, etc., so better after, say, a V8

I'm doing alright. I was a little weak and shaky last night but I didn't eat for a while. I am also taking a daily vitamin with iron in it now so I do feel less tired all the time

My blood pressure really isn't that now. It is pretty low but a healthy low.
