There are the most locked threads I've seen since the Spoon Wars. :/

That is true. Though I myself came a little bit after the war, so I dunno how chaotic that was.

I wasn't there for the spoony war, but I can regretfully say I've had my own private wars in the past where locked topics were involved. It was a chain of events that started with a spark of misinterpreting a post I made at the wrong time. I know since then and from then I've learned a lot and tried to move on like everyone else, but I also feel like little to nothing has changed.

It's hard to know what to think, and hard to know what to do.

For clarification, what happened is I had a birthday party.  It got...uh...energetic.  ^^

It really had nothing to do with anything outside of that.

Also, Patrick, this was way bigger than the Spoon Wars (although only 4 people were involved); mods just did a better job of fixing it, so it seems small, so people won't freak out like they did with the Spoon Wars ;P

What posts exactly are in question? Almost nothing has been deleted recently except directly rule-breaking and inappropriate posts.

I would really like to know specifically what you think is a "dick move" so it can be addressed or corrected.

Which posts? Be specific. As far as I know, the moderators didn't do that, unless there was a good reason to delete the specific post.

I cannot flat out guarantee to you that I, or another moderator, didn't make some mistake. So I ask, what is the specific wrong thing we are being accused of?

Moderation is not always public and we cannot discuss every locked thread or deleted post.

Why is there a presumption that we're in the wrong here before specifics are even being discussed?

I'm in no way attacking you, so getting defensive is not needed. And we ask the same questions you do: why are our posts in the wrong before we are able to discuss the rule breaking? Why are they lock first, ask questions later?

And I merely want you to have faith in who you allow to be a mod.

Everytime I see mod/admin drama I relish it more than usual. I'm interested in being a Kumoricon mod again some day so I try and play nicer than I would otherwise. I'm not applying for the job any time soon though since I no longer have the free time and accessibility from work like I used to. However, I can't help but watch the forums and second guess every move made by each new team of mods. I always think "Well I coulda handled that better." or "Things wouldn't have gotten that bad if I'd had control." Especially when the specific things I was known for as a mod are brought up again.

Right now however I can't make a call about what's been going on since I've been offline so much.
However I'm looking forward to reading about it and having a nice little schadenfreude moment. Then we can move on with things.

The thing is though is that there are multiple mods taking care of this. I "handled" the Spoon War by myself. lol

This is why you fail.

One of my posts I was being smarmy and was like, "Anime con forums are srs bsns" or some dumb crap like that and that got deleted.

That post was deleted because it was after 4 clearly off-topic posts, and was the 5th in a stream of posts that wasn't really on-topic for that thread (the Singles 18+ thread).

And damn, how many of us have a photographic memory and can remember every little thing?

You seemed to have enough in mind for you to say:

That is such a dick move.

So I'm asking, why?

Generally you guys seem much too eager to lock things and delete posts.

A general comment about locking and deleting posts: If the moderator did not contact the author of the locked thread or deleted post explaining it, it most likely means the moderator deemed it a very minor offense, or no offense at all, but is just the moderator keeping things on-topic. We don't take any action against posters unless it was a major transgression, or series of smaller ones, in which case we will definitely contact you about it and you will have a chance to defend.

Locking a thread is not a finding of guilt on the thread starter or participants.

Finally, the forum is not intended to be a chat room. It is meant to host organized discussions, though we do allow a small number of almost free-for-all threads, subject to normal forum rules. Blocking some content is the ordinary course of business for almost any Internet forum. Any Internet forum usually has a specific target for how strictly they moderate, which shapes the types of discussions on that forum. Occasionally forums push this even further, by having pre-moderated areas--places where the moderators must pre-approve any posts, and may even be selective about only posting the best content--not just removing content that breaks the rules. Hardly any forums set the moderation strictness so low that only illegal content is disallowed.

Also, from the code of conduct:

Quote
If you need to post something pertinent in a locked thread, you may request to a moderator that your post be added or that the thread be unlocked.

This is why I ask for specifics. If you can argue a thread should be unlocked, we can reconsider.

I think all we're really saying is ease up. Not let us go loose, not become even more strict, just ease up. This forum is DIFFERENT then a whole lot of convention forums I have visited, because a lot of us are regulars, and friends, and we go on the forums all year-round. If you say we shouldn't, not that I am making that accusation, but if you ARE saying this forum is for strictly convention and such and only a bit of community, then tell everyone and let us know.

I just don't like being afraid my post will be deleted or locked when I'm posting, on-topic or not~

I definitely want the Off-Topic forum to remain, and I don't think there should be numeric limits on the amount of "community" vs. "convention" discussion. Even though the primary purpose of the forum is the convention, that doesn't mean we're limiting the amount of community. But if there are a lot of threads which don't have a specific subject and are just free-for-all chat, it tends to drown out discussion and distract from other threads. If it happens within an existing thread, that discourages people from participating in the thread for its original purpose.

Forum threads should have a potentially unbounded audience, meaning any newcomer interested in its subject matter can feel comfortable entering anew and participating if they have something on-topic to contribute. Threads which are just chatter are primarily only of interest to a small set of regulars. Again, we do have some threads that are like this (just see the ones that are hundreds or thousands of pages long), but they need to be limited in number and not overtake the rest of the discussion.

Ahhh, this is getting no where. If you don't want to take what we have to say into account, fine. We only want more freedom for chatting and topics. All you are doing is giving reasons to what you've done, which is fine and thank you, but we want you (mods) to change your ways; not have you explain them.

Oslapedo, you're presenting a perfect example of immature, pointless posts that aren't conducive to any rational goal.  You're not making a point effectively: you're being obnoxious and rude to someone who's being ready and willing to work out the issue.

You can't walk into something and interpret it seriously when you yourself are not acting in a serious manner.  Don't expect to be listened to seriously when you're just making a poor attempt at trolling.  TBH I'm growing to find these forums repulsive just because of how immature and unfocused people tend to be.  Everyone seems to have gotten it into their minds that the internet is one big joke with no purpose or meaning and that it's some enormous free-for-all with no potential for meaningful discussion.

TL;DR - Learn to draw clear lines between serious and not or stop complaining when you're treated like a spammer and a troll.

So... Let us review!

A Few Forum Goers - Mods are godmodding!

Jeff - What? Where!!??

A Few Forum Goers - Here!

Jeff - *looks around* Where?

A Few Forum Goers - HERE!!!!

Jeff - *sigh* I can't find it, you'll have to link me, or do a paraphrased quote.

AFFG - Well.. we don't know.. maybe this one.

Jeff - *explains*

AFFG - But there are others!

Jeff - Where?

AFFG - Here!

Jeff and AFFG - *sigh*

DancingTofu - Peace unto ye or I slap ya'll with a fish!
_______

Clearly, the forum is in need of some... heh...mediators.

I think what everyone needs to do is read my update to the idea of CHAT on these forums, that should alleviate a good amount of the questions people have. Any questions that are not alleviated can be PMed to myself or Jeff or Tofu or any Moderator. But here is the short and skinny of it all:

If you aren't adding to the discussion, don't post it.
If it has no intellectual, or carrying value (meaning it doesn't increase the value of the discussion) don't post it.

WHY?

Because thats how it STARTS, a few silly trollicious or obnoxious posts lead others to believe that posting in that manner is okay, and they thread becomes a series of "wut"'s and "no srsly"'s and "adjgjhedqdfksjdjjfffffff"'s that destroy the original puropse of the thread. Similarly, posting a one or two word thread that is for the singular purpose of having other people make spammy sammy posts... is not kosher either. It fills the top of the thread list with garbage. And thats not cool either.

- IF YOU WANT A PLACE TO CHAT GET YAHOO OR SOMETHING -

This is an idea I cannot believe anyone hasn't thought of yet. If you want a place free from Kumoricon appointed Mods, go make an unofficial K-con or friends of the cloudy convention chatroom and you can chat all you want there, and since it's unofficial, we have NO authority to stop you from chatting it up to your hearts content. It's just that easy, make a chat, and when you know people are online, you can hang out there!

If you want to create a group for your friend group similar to the Spoon Castle, let me know... I think this is the simpliest answer, instead of a million little threads disambiguated into chaos, why not find a way to make one grouping for this friend group, build up a following and have some fun? PM me and tell me what you want to do any I can make sure your group is solidified so you can enjoy yourself whilst not spamming the OTC.

Does this make sense? is it easier to understand? Please don't be upset with Jeff or Tofu or any mods... it's not about what we did or what you did, it's about the rules, and upholding them. Chaos breeds more chaos, and if we don't hold up the rules now, when you need them to be held up in your favor... what kind of power do we have then?
