Do you cosplay for "fame" or for "fun"?
« on: March 24, 2010, 02:33:51 pm »
I was looking up cosplays since i need one but then a question popped up in my head.

Should i cosplay for fun? or for pictures?
I know everyone likes getting there picture taken at cons (if you don't thats okay) but
sometimes to get pictures you cosplay a character you don't want to do or you'd like to cosplay
someone else.

So i just kinda want some responses about these questions//HONEST OPINION!

-Do you cosplay for fun or pictures?
-Do you cosplay a character even though nobody might recognize them?
-and How do you choose your cosplay plans? ( I have such a hard time with this DDD: lol )

Well I may not be able to give you a good answer as this will be my first year cosplaying, but I can say some things.

I myself am doing it for the fun.
When you have a good costume, you will get noticed either way, weather you wanted to or not.
So in my case, while Im not looking for attension, I wont say no to a picture or two. I just wont go and look for it. lol

As for choosing my costume, thats IS a hard one.

For me, there are many male characters that I could easily pull off and do no problem. But the issue I have is, it seems like a waste. Take Air Gear for example. They all dress normal. I could dress like that every day and it wouldnt stand out as special.

Thats why I turned to crossplay. The point of this is to dress as a character we like. I would never cross dress outside of this event so why not do somthing bold? *shruggs*

I can relate entirely.  ^_^;  And it just so happens that pretty much all of my favorite characters happen to be girls -- so what's a guy to do?!

There are a couple of male characters I'd do .. like Scar from Full Metal Alchemist or Rover from Animal Crossing.  But generally, the only characters I've ever been interested in cosplaying (Chii from Chobits, Misha from Pita-Ten, Sasami from Tenchi Muyo) have been girls.  And they just happen to be 3 of my favorite characters.  Sooooo...

As to the original poster's question .. I'd say I cosplay for fun.  It just so happens if you crossplay you're more likely to get people interested in taking your picture, I guess because it seems more wild or bold or whatever. ^_^;

I do it for both. In my opinion, the most fun is making the most complex thing you can find. Then, of course, the complex amazing things get the most attention.

Win-win situation.

Well, it started out for fun with me, but I think it slowly turned into fame. xD

I love getting my picture taken, and I always want to cosplay as someone anyone would recognize.

Ah, and about the crossplaying thing, some people do it for fame. Like, my friend and I wanted to crossplay as Hikaru and Kaoru just because tons of people would recognize us and probably glomp us. ^_^

Only fun, I like seeing who can actually guess my characters.
Those who can may get ecstatic when they realize someone actually cosplays said character.
When said character is dead, reactions get better...

I cosplay for fun.

Fame is part of the fun - I love it when people ask for pictures. But that only occasionally happens.

Cosplay is best when it's personally fulfilling, altough it can be hard when no one shows the same enthusiasm about it that you do. Case in point - I cosplayed as a book character to MEWcon. No one but me knew who I was, but I'm glad I did it. :D I'll also be wearing my genderbent Mad Hatter costume to Sakura-Con. I know people won't be asking for pictures, but it's a costume I love.

The way I choose characters to cosplay... Well, I take into account what characters I like, what I look like and what I can pull off, and money.

I HAVE SUCCUMBED AND GIVEN MYSELF A SIGNATURE! :000

I just cosplay for fun, even if I do have some very recognizable costumes. I don't really care either way. Besides, most of my costumes these days are part of a group cosplay (other than the Star Wars stuff, but that's for the 501st anyway and not specifically for cons).

I definitely do this for fun. I don't care about being famous... I'm flattered when people think my cosplay is picture-worthy, but I wouldn't bother if I didn't enjoy making and wearing the costume to begin with.

I haven't actually done many cosplays, but... I have both popular and obscure characters on my list of cosplay plans. For me it's about challenging myself, and it's a way of showing I like the character/series. I'd be really happy if I was recognised but if not I'd still be happy that I did it. (and I'd like to add that a really amazing and well-made costume will attract attention even if it's incredibly obscure - perhaps not as much as a very popular character but you'll still get some attention.)

I choose my plans based on what I think I can pull off given my current amount of time and resources. If one of my cosplays is really complicated I'll pick other ones that are simpler so I don't overwork myself. I also factor in what my friends' plans are because cosplaying as a group is more fun. After that... I just go with what I feel like at the moment, though I'll stick to it once I start working on it.
Done: Blue Spirit (A:tLA), Sollux Captor (HS)
will do: Yukio (AnE), Robin (YJ), genderbent Nilus (MAOH), Dave and Signless (Homestuck); other things I'm forgetting

hmm, difficult to say. it's a mix for me. I started out cosplaying because my brother wouldn't buy my registration for me if I didn't. But now I keep doing it because it's fun and I want to improve with each costume I make. Part of it is fame because I hope to someday become really good, but part of it is fun because I just love making the characters that I love!

I generally try to pick stuff from semi-obscure stuff. Stuff that definetly has a fan-base, but not everybody might recognize. It feels really good to meet somebody who says "omg, I love that show too!" I actually decided to put off my shugo chara cosplay just because it was really well known and a lot of people would be cosplaying that.

I choose my cosplay plans (which is a very long list) based on primarily if I look like the character, generally I don't have a problem loving a character or an anime if it means theres a character who I can cosplay. Then I choose which one is closer to my level of sewing skills and I sort them based on that, choosing a slightly more complex character every time I make a new one, so that I improve.

The first 2 anime cons I ever went to, I didn't have any cosplay. With that being said, if the cosplay looked good/amazing/cool whether I knew who it was or not, I would take pictures. I could see how much detail was put into a costume & appreciate that persons hard work. Of course, if I recognize the character, I am a bit more excited to take the picture...but either way it's cool.

As for myself, I have been making my cosplays for fun. The way I see it is, if you put enough effort into making it look good, there will always be at least a little fame that comes with it.

For fun.  I...almost only wear obscure things, so it couldn't be for fame anyways!  Although, it's always nice to get a picture taken of you, even if the photographer has no idea who you're dressed as... (sob sob.)

I ALWAYS cosplay for fun ^^ I don't see why you should cosplay someone if you aren't gunna have any fun being them =/ I mean having fame is always fun too but if you aren't having fun, then I see no point ^^

I always tend to cosplay the people and characters that most anime con goers don't seem to know and I usually don't care~ ^^ As long as I'm having fun in my cosplay then I'm fine! And usually there are always a selected few that know who I am. It makes me happy knowing that SOME people recognize me xD I don't have to have a lot of people know who I am to make my con experience good.

Plus, a lot of people take pictures of me and give me compliments anyways even though they don't know the character that I am. ^^ Even a simple, "Oh I like your costume!" or "You look really cool!" makes me satisfied~ That just shows you that people do like all the hard work that you put into your cosplay to make you look good and the character! And if you even get famous by doing that then kudos for ya too xD That's how I got around anyway~ ^^

As for choosing a character, I always take my own looks into consideration (but this only applies to ME only xD). I think about how I would look as that certain character and if I would be able to pull it off or not. Cause I wouldn't want to make the character look bad or myself look bad as a cosplayer. Though cosplaying is about being your favorite character, to me, if I'm not gunna look good as that character then I don't want to be them no matter how much I actually do xD Cause I certainly DO NOT want a bad cosplay rep xD

I cosplay for Fun..... I've never actually cosplayed for fame....... Haha.

Honestly. It sounds weird. but I have never done that. I find it kind've useless in a way. I mean if you want to go head and do that it's fine. But to me Cosplay is about enjoying your self, and not just having people go "OH EM GEE! I KNOW YOU YOU'RE LYE TOTALLY FAMOUS?!!?1/1/1?!?1/1/1!?!?"

I guess for some people it's what they DO, but...Personally I find it a waist of time.

This'll be my first con this year, and I have to say one thing. I shall use my cosplaying abilities for fun, and not evil!  :D
The only thing that keeps me from Cosplaying for fame, is that, well, unlike most people who can pull off amazing costume stunts, or know how to work a camera (JenxtheJinx), I have no talent. ^^ And well, if I did, who would want to watch me being, well, me dressed up as a character from a game they've probably never heard of?
I guess I would, lawl. And I agree with DNP, it's more fun to cosplay for fun, then just put something on and 'say' your having fun.
How I pick my characters:
1) Things I'm into at the moment. (Like for the next con, I think I might go as an Animal Crossing Character ^^)
2) What are my friends into? (They're going to con, and I hang out with them. They probably know something one I'd be good at.)
3) Always result back to deviantart. (I don't know why, but I find a TON of cosplay's that I'd like to do on there.)

No offense taken! I mean, I got into Vexen in the first place because my friends we're going and gave me between a choice of like, Mar-mar, Sai'x, Vexen, and like Xaldin. When they said Vexen was a mad scientist, that totally got me into him ^^.

Seriously?  Which character?  I'm thinking of going as Rover. ^_^

i'm probably going to go as Stitches next year! :3

I was thinking something along the lines of like, possibly the little cat, and her mom.. Why does her name slip my mind now?! Katie and Katrina I think... If not, I'll go as Ruby the Bunny ^^ And yes, photoshoot!

ahhh. I don't think those have to be mutually exclusive!
I'm a theatre kid, so I love the atmosphere of Con. It's like entering a whole other universe. Or like...a hundred different plays all accidently walked onto eachother's stage. I love the three-demensial, theatre aspect of the whole thing.
And I LOVE being around people who get just as bubbly and nerdy as I do about the things that I can't talk to any of my high-brow "comics/anime=anti-social/unwashed masses of squealy teenagers" school friends about.
Just being ANYWHERE where I can say
OMG! I LOVE castle Hetrodyne! I'M THE PRETTIEST FROG IN THIS WHOLE POND!
and not be carted off by those nice men in their white labcoats; is pretty cool.

And yeah! I love having people take pictures of me! I love it, not only because, frankily, it's a nice little ego boost for me...but also because it means I've come across people that have some sort of similar interest as me! I love seeing people get as gooshy about what I'm wearing, as I do about them.
and frankily, making cosplays are an obsessive sort of hobby type labour-of-love. getting to where them, and have people care, is great fun.

not that I don't do unrecognizable things too. In fact in a tradition that is getting sadly retired this year, every con I've been to, my friends and I do one day where we dress up as original characters from webcomics and stories that we dream of eventually getting started. We do it because it helps us get a better idea of how those characters work, adn how they interact in the real world. not to mention what they look like. But on top of that, on the occasion that we do get people taking pictures of us in those costumes, it gives us a good feeling that maybe this is something taht people WILL enjoying seeing in said webcomic or story.

anyway, that's my take on it.

cheers

also.
(haha. sorry. This girl just won't shut up will she???)

In terms of how I pick? because I am so obsessive with sewing, I try to keep a list of projects I wanna do, including costumes. I have a excel page where I keep track of every character from all the things I love that might someday wanna do. I also have all the girls from my cosplay group, so well all share ideas and what we wanna see eachother do, as well as do ourselves. We also have a "joe nobody" column where we put costumes that we wanna see or make, but nobody in our group right now could pull off.

That way, when the time comes to pick costumes for cons, we just go through the list and see what we feel like doing. It's also really nice, if you go with a group, to co-ordinate, so that you have a troupe to pose with, and hang around with.
They don't even really have to be from the same thing.

Like...this year. One of our group wanted to do a horde of moogles. So we all agreed, except for one, who had already picked her three days of costumes. So she comrpomised.
She was gonna do Beast boy from teen titans, who has the power to change into different animals. So now she's doing beast boy, with a green moogle ball. It's a stupid joke, but it makes us laugh, and that way we all re-inforce each-other's excitement for the con.

Cheers!

-Do you cosplay for fun or pictures?

Both! I LOVE cosplaying and I know I've done a good job when you get asked for your picture!

-Do you cosplay a character even though nobody might recognize them?

If I loved the character enough I would definitely. I have to love my cosplay too!

-and How do you choose your cosplay plans? ( I have such a hard time with this DDD: lol )

My cosplay plans seem to change alot, but I try and have them decided by Halloween time so I can buy wigs and such if I need too. My Lina Inverse cosplay consisted of things I found cheap during Halloween, Christmas (Orbs for her jewel armor), and Easter (Eggs shaves jewels for armor) !!! Usually I pic an anime I like, then talk alot with my friends (since we like to collaborate and go as an anime group, or just choose something I'm really into at that moment and can afford) I also make sure I pick a characters who's outfit I know I will be comfortable/semi look good in, lol. Though Princess Serenity in 2006 was NOT comfortable at all but I did it for love because it's Sailor Moon duh! I think I lost five pounds between wearing the wig, the dress, wings, and heavy bow all weekend long Dx All in all, mainly the thing that makes me choose is the love of the character and if I can pull it off or not. 2007 is when I started Lina but it didn't happen since it was alot of work, I ended up being Kikyo cause my sister was Kikyo in 2004, I just needed a new wig.

The other thing that describes con that I've heard, is;

Quote
It's a place for all freaks with freaky freaks to come and see other freaky freak freaks, and dance and prance and sing along, and drink ramue and eat pocky, and skip merrily along the sidewalks of Portland. I mean, even if it wasn't Kumoricon, we could probably get away with it. But during con, we do tend to attract less unmerry people. Like cops, and such.

I don't see the point of cosplaying for fame. I mean, what's the point? For a few pictures? Meh.
I cosplay for fun. Sure, I hardly ever get any pictures taken of me (which I still can't figure out why), but at least I enjoy cosplaying the character I'm dressed as. Dressing as a character I dislike just because I want a few pictures taken of me doesn't sound like much fun at all... and a waste of my time and money.

I cosplay for fun, and I usually base my cosplays on what's 'going out of style' or havn't been done in a while.

I learned something very important is Sakura Con...fame is fun. I love it when people want to take my picture. This S-con I was never asked and that made me really sad. So, yeah, rethinking future cosplays. It's not like I'm going to cosplay from something that is over-cosplayed, but at least something that is epic or one that people would know a little better.

^Don't you hate it when you cosplay some anime/manga/game character, and realize that there are like, 15 other people with the exact same costume as you? That really bugs me.

^ That will happen with any popular character. If I like something I'm not going to allow its popularity to get in my way - you just have to make sure your costume is as great as you can make it... the little details make all the difference between an average costume and a great one. If you put that extra little bit of effort in it makes all the difference. 8D
Done: Blue Spirit (A:tLA), Sollux Captor (HS)
will do: Yukio (AnE), Robin (YJ), genderbent Nilus (MAOH), Dave and Signless (Homestuck); other things I'm forgetting
