Your family and anime (REDUX)
« on: April 19, 2010, 09:59:39 pm »
This was one of my first topics and my most popular so I am bringing it back!

How do your parents/family feel about anime? Do they like it or do they not care? Do they even hate it and wish you did not watch it?

My parents did not care about anime when I first started (many years ago) but when we all watched Princess Mononoke together they gained much more respect for the medium and even nowadays enjoy the ocassional Miyazaki film.

My father doesn't care much for it. But he does sometimes sit and watch it, if I have it on the TV.

My mother on the other hand, tries to get into it.
But then she has to walk away, because most of the stuff I watch has too much violence. :3

My parents don't care.  Then again, my dad once told me he'd love me even if he found out I was in love with the dog.  So, they're pretty easy going.  (And for the record, I'm more of a cat guy.)

My parents honestly didn't really know or for that matter care lol...watched it mostly when I wasn't home since I didn't have any of my own. On another note though, I did live with my G/F & her parents for a while & found that they enjoyed anime...they even owned all of DBZ themselves lol. That was kinda cool since we ended up watching the occasional anime with them.

My wife will watch good movies, but she really doesn't want to bother watching series. And she doesn't like it if/when I go to Anime Friday. sigh.

My mom thinks I'm stupid and need to get a life, of course that's with me aspiring for art too. "What does an artist get paid..." I get so angry I just wanna snap and be, "Probably more than an unemployed elementary school teacher..." -___-

My dad... O.o Frightens me.
His favorite is InuYasha xD
I always see him playing with the cat and he says, "I learned this from Igu Washa" (spelled wrong on purpose) and he keep harping me about seeing the end of the first arc of Bleach on the computer cause he missed it on the T.V. And When I told him about FMA brotherhood and the new Inuyasha he kept bugging me about that too. Sometimes when I have alot of homework, he'll get to watch more anime then me in a week. xD LOL I still laugh at him when I remind him what he said to me when I was small that I would grow out of Sailor Moon... HAH!

Mom is semi-supportive. Dad hates it. Brother Chris hates it. Brother Scott just teases.  :(

Honestly, I really don't understand why most peoples' parents would care.  ^_^;  My parents never cared.  I'm to the age now where I suppose they could express concern, but they can't stop me from doing anything, so ..

I'd rather my kid dress up like an anime character instead of going out and doing drugs.  :/

It's a valid question to keep in mind (most artists still have to keep day jobs), but it shouldn't necessarily stop you from pursuing it.

It's still pretty much the same. My mother thinks I'm crazy and thinks she knows just about everything there is about cosplay and conventions when she's never done any. :/

My dad's pretty supportive, tries to help me when he can but won't give me anything and everything and he's willing to except that I like to completely change how I look for a weekend.

actually i'm gonna be a japanese teacher <.< >.> in japan! lolol so that comment about artists and teachers isn't quite true <.< even though my part time job is gonna be a manga artist >.< (i still draw atm just haven't gotten much inspiration)
my parents (when i was little) just thought we were watching cartoons lawl (which is true lol) but what we watched back then was pokemon, dijimon, hamtaro, and sailor moon (classics i must say XD) and then i slowly started to dive into in around 6th grade, cuz of the asian influence around me XD woot cerritos!
but yea. i'm in love with miyasaki's work! <33333 my favorite so far is howl's moving castle my first was kiki's delivery service, but my first "anime" (that i knew was anime) was mononoke

now my dad thinks i'm crazy (me and my sister both lol) for the cosplay part of the otaku part of us. my sister is a yaoi freak (lol) i'm in love with yaoi (paring) not the books (occasionally XD).
my mom thinks that it's great that i have a hobby, but not one that takes up most of my study/school time >.< and that i should study and not worry about dressing up and AN-E-MEH lolol (she actually says it right lol) BUT she did like watching with me sometimes (like she would out of the blue come into the living room and watch what i'm watching outta curiousity and then she'd ask what's going on)

my parents are curious, but at the same time don't care (my dad was born in the 50's and my mom in the 60's) so they don't really care much about video games, or animated cartoons (unless it's like scooby doo, flintstones, jetsons, etc love them <3) but yea. my parents are old school but they just wonder why i watch such violent and odd things.

I know what pursuing art means. That's also the reason I am getting degrees in Writing, English and some type of theater as well. And I'm not kidding, I'm killing myself with 20 credits at the moment, 12 being full time. Yet apprently I'm still a kid that can't handle the real world or understand what it takes to survive in it... yet Im an honor student...still in school.. doing this much... -____- Evil

My dad is  clueless when he waltzes in seeing  his fourteen year old son doing the hare hare yukai or cross dressing....
My mom has fallen in love with it and watched seven episodes straight of Sailor Moon. For some reason she likes to dress up in weird clothes she finds and walks around con. She got a punch of steampunk stuff and got fairy wings, so I consider her a success.

lol, my parents came to my favorite anime store with me once. They actually had fun, after they stopped feeling excluded everytime i started spouting off about the show from which the plushie they had examined was from...
Mom: OH, look at this! Its cute!
Me: THAT, is mokona, who was given to syaoran by the dimensional witch in exchange for sakura's memories of him. It has the ability to     travel between dimensions, sense sakura's "feathers", and much more, which makes it infinitely useful in.....*rest of long rant omitted*
Mom: ........oh.....kay? *puts plushie back*

hey what's wrong with chobits D:  Haha.  Um.  I dunno.  I showed my dad the Chobits AMV I made a few years ago. ^_^;  And actually the original version had the sequence where he first powers on Chii.  I kind of edited it for the version I submitted to Kumoricon since if you're not familiar w/ the series it comes across as perverted. ^_^;

Also, after getting hugged a bunch at Kumoricon while crossplaying as Chii .. I developed this habit of wanting to say "chiiii~!" any time someone gives me a hug.  It's bad.

yea... i think its a common misconception that male to female crossplaying is a strictly sexual thing.
Noone says that to the legions of female to male crossplayers... Its more about freely being any character despite gender...
Besides, am i the only one who thinks its absolutely stupid that while females have fought their way out of gender stereotypes and be whoever they want, men have locked themselves into the masculine aesthetic?
....idk. its just kinda weird to me that while women are praised as being strong when they wear what was once strictly for men, its some taboo pervert thing if men try it. *terminate rant*
