Question about a Potentially Hazardous Peice of my Cosplay
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:54:23 pm »
So one day for Kumori con I will be going as Giriko Sou from Soul Eater.
He's a chainsaw weapon, and I was wondering, if I put dull chainsaw chains on my pants, will I be asked to change my pants to be able to enter the convention?

He's a chainsaw weapon,

thought that was bad grammar then I realized we are talking about anime...

as long as they are fully dull and not attached to an actual chainsaw I believe you are fine- let me look up the official code for you though.

Edit: you fall under the last part of our prop law

Exotic weapons will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Do not bring weapons that Kumoricon staff cannot tell are fake from ten feet away.

Certain props are not allowed within the Convention Space. These include, but are not limited to:

Airsoft or projectile weapons
Live (sharp enough to cut) steel
Props wide enough or long enough to inhibit flow of traffic
Replica weapons that do not comply with state or federal law
Paddles (all varieties—including “yaoi” or “yuri” paddles)
Props which impede personal or public safety

No Problem- best bet would to PM our assistant Yojimbo Manager or head Yojimbo.

Kylite is a long time Yojimbo and would most likely be able to give you a more definite answer.

Hotel Perspective -

This is a con staff issue, as long as the pose no threat to any human leg that happens
to brush by (We don't need our other con attendees getting lacerations from the blades)
then it is only an aesthetic addition to the cosplay, and will be clearly non-threatening.

The most I would ask is maybe you get the pants peace bonded just in case.

If however they are sharp and the info desk deems them dangerous, you may have to
take them off. I doubt you wouldn't test the sharpness first when you are at home though.

Just be conscious of others and the items you are using, and you should be just fine!

Alright, thank you.
I might just end up using bicycle chains just to be safe.

Chainsaw chains are rather nasty, and due to their rather pointy design, you would have to completely ruin every single tooth on that particular chain to be safe, because even brushing against a tooth with a dulled cutting edge can scratch someone. If you were to round over the tip and dull the cutting edge on each tooth, I would green light it.

Just remember these are pants you are talking about.  No sitting on anything, period.  You will snag cloth covers, rip leather and vinyl, scratch painted surfaces, in general it will be a nightmare.  When we were at FaerieWorld my wife saw some pants that had been made with zippers edges in the seams of the crotch area on both sides (not zippers but the zip part of the zipper, running in the seams).  They looked cool, but you wouldn't want to sit on anything with them the zipper edges would totally destroy cloth and leather couches and chairs.  No leaning against the side of cars or navigating through parked cars, you will be a walking paint scratcher.  I know I wouldn't want you within ten feet of my car.  Keep away from playground equipment and escalators.  If you could pull it off with foam or cloth designed to look like chains, you would probably have a much more functional cosplay.  This is a case of realism vs practicality.

as long as they are really really dull, like smooth, you shouldn't worry, otherwise you will be a scratching menace like Wuntvor said

Yes, bicycle chains are the only good bet for this, just make sure they are clean.  There is almost no way you would get a real chainsaw blade safe enough for my taste.  Not to mention the safety of yourself with those on, geesh.

And remember when it comes to props, you are probably the only one who pays enough attention to tell the difference between bicycle chains and dull chainsaw chains. Chains are chains and if you are a chainsaw weapon, everyone will simply assume they are chainsaw chains!  :D
