Guy (the coordinator) doesn't tell us what videos actually made it in. We didn't know until the day before con at the AMV dinner and even then we had to bug Guy until he finally cracked and told us.

Doesn't matter. I've lost interest in the convention. It would've been my first.

Hmmm, curiousity got the better of me and I weht to the convention to see which version of the "Ah My Scooby Doo" would be shown. To my surprise none of my contest entry videos were shown. Just because I wasn't going to attend meant that the videos should be removed. I just become extremely nervous in crowds.
Having seen how the convention was, I won't go again.

So you're doing this again, after doing the same thing because you didn't win at Sakura Con?
Your video(s) weren't shown not based on the fact that you weren't going to attend the convention - for example, I submitted to Animethon up in Canada, didn't go, and one of my videos was a finalist there. Your video(s) were beat out by other videos in their categories.

I don't mean to be rude or condescending, but not every video you submit is going to be a finalist or win. Another example - "Ginta Reviews a Movie" got Best Comedy and Best in Show at Sakura Con. At Animethon, it was a finalist, but won nothing.
Something tells me that wasn't a very good idea...

The reason I wasn't going to attend is beacause crowds make me extremely nervous/panicy. Besides, isn't there provisions for such as in making arrangements to send prizes to those who won be did not attend?! And what does attending or not have to do with showing someones work? I put my heart and soul into those videos. I will trust anything Guy or anyone from KumoriCon says. Even though I wasn't SakuraCon, they had the descency to show the video.

And since you're using the logic of "Duh, we did show it because you weren't going to be here duh" The what about the people from Europe that entered?! Are they attending the convention? Fair is fair. If they're not there, their videos shouldn't be shown either.

Oh, I understand, I get nervous in crowds, too. And, yeah, they'll send you awards if you win but don't attend.
I'm not saying that attending has to do with it at all - that has nothing to do with it. Your videos weren't finalists because you didn't attend, they weren't finalists because other videos beat them out in the eyes of the judges. I'm not saying you didn't put love and care into those videos, I'm sure you did, just like I put love into my videos - but they can't all be finalists.
I'm also sure that they, like Sakura Con, will show all the video entries sometime during the Con. So your videos will be shown.
Something tells me that wasn't a very good idea...

Okay I accept that the other videos were better. To be honest, since SakuraCon, even if I put my heart and soul into a video, I have zero expectations of ever winning.
Part of me died last month when my brother in law died of cancer. I been helping my sister try to put her life back together. Which is hard.
Even if by some slim chance that I did win something, I wouldn't accept it. I would say give it to someone whose video didn't make the cut.
I won't be submitting videos after this. I have nothing left inside. I congradulate those who did make the cut. And wish them continued success.
And this experience has opened my eyes, so I have asked/emailed that kindtree productions to remove the art I submitted for cards from their line. I have no creative talent. That's the truth of the matter.

Imposer, do you seriously think that your videos didn't show because the staff didn't think you were attending?

They didn't show your videos because they didn't make it into the contest. Dozens upon dozens of videos are submitted each year, and only a small handful of them actually make it into the contest, or even get played at all. Don't go making assumptuous claims like that, its insulting to everyone.

No, I accept the fact that I have no talent. That's a given. And have requestion Tim Mueller at KindTree Productions to remove all the art I submitted from their card art line.

I won't be doing videos or art many more.  Like my parents always told me, I just don't have any talent. Besides, I'm nearly 50 years old and only have windows movie maker. These contests are more for the young. I'm tired and empty inside. No more submissions will be made by me.

Wow... this post went to a strange place...

Listen dude, no one here but you is saying that you don't have talent. Like Pie Row said many videos get cut and don't make it to the actual contest showing. I think it was said that there were 75 entries this year and they have to cut that down to a two hour showing. There are many factors that contribute to a video not making it in so just because you didn't make it in doesn't mean your video sucked. My video was cut due to the Hylander Rule, only one video from a anime per category, but people who have seen it have enjoyed it.

There are editors on this forum who are more than willing to help you out and give you pointers, I mean three of us did run a Creators Panel on Saturday talking about all this stuff, all you gotta do is ask. But if you wanna be all emo and but hurt about it, that's cool to.

Actually, I showed the "Kentucky Derby" parody in the Pre-show ahead of the contest, and there were some good giggles here and there. Now, oddly enough, the energy of the room DROPPED a little during one certain fan-service-y clip (the huge-glands girl in the bikini at a finish line.)
This validates my theory that strange though it may seem, the crowd (as a crowd) is actually more conservative than they would admit if interviewed as individuals, and why judges panels over the years still often tend to skew toward entries that are squeaky-clean "G" even when we are a PG or PG-13 event.

Quote from: Imposer12
Just because I wasn't going to attend meant that the videos should be removed.
The judges selected a playlist on 24-July-10, Unless an entrant reveals in a bumper whether he or she intends to attend, there is no way the judges would know to 'burn' any particular entry based on attendance - and that's truly NOT a factor in which videos get picked. Four winners this year came from across one or another ocean, they did NOT attend, and they will be sent a prize and a convention swag-bag.

Besides, I'm nearly 50 years old and only have windows movie maker.
FWIW, I am 47 and I use an old version of AE (5.5) and I just got PRE ver 8. You can buy Adobe Premiere Elements 8 in a combo pack with Photoshop Elements 8 for less than $200 at Target. I think I paid $169 with a $30 rebate knocking it down to $139. Vlad Pohnert and Brad DeMoss are highly accomplished AMV editors who are well into if not on the backside of 'middle age' as well. I really don't think age has anything to do with it, except us older folks may tend to make references that the younger crowd doesn't get. (Vice-versa applies on THAT!)
Aging is no place for wimps; your eyes and ears don't do what they used to, but maybe you can see some issues in new ways because of your accumulated wisdom, and create a message which is engaging in a unique way. You can also dig up and re-use old classic jokes the young-un's haven't heard yet...

Imho, WMM should be viewed as training wheels on a bike - its video output quality is mediocre at best, and very easily surpassed by 'lite' versions of the more powerful editing programs out there. (Sony Vegas, PRE, AE,) and personally I sometimes use Hash Animation Master ($79.)
Getting out of WMM and into any of these other programs will up your video quality, so your videos won't get weeded out so quickly, and you have a better chance of getting up on the screen. "Kentucky Derby" was VERY original in its audio source - THAT get you props and instant advantage over every other AMV that used lame-ass sappy, syrupy drama/romance songs (and we got about 18 of those) plus anything else that simply was NOT funny enough (for the Random Amusement category.)

As I stated, I won't enter any more contests. I just don't have the talent for it.
But am working toward creating the worst AMV ever. And this by far is the worst (according to several AMV loving otaku).

I present this AMV as the absolute lowpoint of the medium: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GToruQNnPIU

Definitely worse than the one you linked to, no offense xD

"No" to all of the above.

I have the reference-standard nadir (low-point)
I will not link it because I do not want to embarrass the person who submitted it - I always have hope that people who keep trying can eventually succeed at something or at least learn something else which can be usefully applied elsewhere...

But none of you guys have really, really broken through the sea floor with a crack-the-core crater job like the one I call "the worst EVAH."
It's in my "Pain" directory, for those of you who know what THAT means...

HEY WANNA CALL THIS A CATEGORY?!?

I dunno. Maybe there's something wrong with me for thinking so, but while some scenes (and the overall disjointedness) did leave me going "Wuh?", there were some that made me smile or even laugh. (Especially Sgt Frog / A-Team and Negima / Avenue Q.)

I didn't think it even comes close to qualifying for the panel we'll try to make Guy run next year. (^_^)

Actually, that sounds good to me! We'll call it "AMVs that Scarred Me for Life", a la Beau's panel, and put you and a couple of other experts up there to give them the MST3K treatment... (^_~)

Hey, that sounds kinda like my "I Can Has WMM?" does it not? I think it could be fun to see some high profile creators make "low-brow" AMVs... kinda the AMV equivalent of grind-house homages?

Heheh, and that is about the only excuse I could possibly have for "I Can Has WMM? 2: The Sequel Nobody Actually Cares About"... which would be a candidate for longest AMV title ever if nothing else xD

It's a fun idea to talk about but actually doing it... that's another story. I personal don't want to **** through a panel of bad AMV's even for the sole purpose of ripping on them. The other problem is saying trying to figure out what videos are the worst dabbles into the "Noob" vs. "Nub" arguments (Noobs being new to the game and not knowing what to do and Nubs being they've been here for a while and just haven't gained skill) I really don't wanna rip on a video that a first time editor made and kill their spirit for editing if they happen to find out that their video was one we decided to call "the worst." If you really want to find bad amv's just keep clicking in "Related videos" on youtube and you'll  find some uber crap.

"I Can Has WMM" and "A Total Wast of 6:45" and GOOD videos in my opinion. Intentionally making fun of "the don'ts" of editing is good times. Doing vids like that are fun but I think they can only be taken so far anyway. When it comes down to it all the "bad" things we can do to a video are gonna be the same (i.e. subtitles, watermarks, not converting to progressive video)

I'm pretty sure if you are making videos you at least have WMM and as for all the other programs we use, GUESS WHAT! THEY'RE ALL FREE! Here's the link :     http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech3/
Just click on the thing that says "Download the AMV APP 3.0" and istall that on your comp.

Heres how to generate the LONGEST AMV title:

You would name it "{A} vs {B}" where {A} and {B} are LONG anime titles. Here are some hints:

- Bakamatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto
- Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru
- Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai
- Harukanaru toki no naka de Hachiyousho
- Kumo no Mukō, Yakusoku no Basho
- Kenran Buttosai: The Mars Daybreak

... are the longest anime names I can think of offhand ...

Sorry for the ambiguity - I was referring to the "AMVs that Scarred Me for Life" panel that I proposed immediately afterward, mostly as a joke. Despite the fact that it would be funny, it has way too much potential to be taken as nonconstructive criticism (as somanyturtles correctly noted).
