How is YOUR Kumoricon?
« on: September 04, 2010, 03:55:46 pm »
Hey All!

Well I've been running and gunning about the convention space, maybe you've
even seen me in the stairwells or posting signs to the elevators?

I've been asking people how the convention is going for them and trying to get
as much feedback as possible so we can keep the momentum and the spirit
going throughout the convention, it's middle of day 1 and so far I hear lots of
positives, some problems, but all around fun times just like Kumoricon is meant
to be.

I will be watching this thread pretty heavily (when I'm supposed to be sleeping
mostly) and if you have any curiosities or things you want to let everyone know
about how YOUR K-con is rolling along, post it here! I'll be trying to do updates
on twitter too, and if you see a frazzled red head running down the hall near
you, don't be afraid to say hi and let me know how things are going, I love you
guys and I wanna here your fun con stories!

Mine is pretty awesome, I spent the wee hours of this morning practicing my
FILK for opening ceremonies (if you missed it, you can try and convince me to
maybe sing it for my kamikaze Neko ally panel, or in the Karaoke room at sometime
this con) and I got to hang with the Anime Hunters and Beau Gentry backstage!
That was a blast because all the A.H. crew is so funny and carefree, they are
awesome people! And Beau is... well, he is just Beau! Everyone loves him!

But the fun part was when Kevin McKeever walked back into the back stage and
looked and me and made a silly face! I made a silly face back and we laughed!
I absolutely love laid back happy go-lucky guests who are here to have as much
fun and excitement as we are!

So... How is YOUR Kumoricon?

Mine and my hunnys is going great. First year for us and we are loving every minute. The only pain was the lines for pre-registration but I guess its a norm for conventions. We got to do an awsome Bleach photoshoot and can hardly wait to see how the pictures came out that other people were taking. I think our cosplay outfits looked good (Captain Unohana and Captain Shunsui) but we can hardly wait for next year and be even better organized cosplay wise. Oh and before I forget I even got the pictures that were taken with my camera up online for everyone to get their copies. ^.^ I'm so happy.

Well if we run into you at all I'll offer ya a big hug and cheer ya on. ^.^ Sunday is the only day sadly me and him can have the full day to attend sense his work wouldn't allow him time off in time. Anywho if you would like me to take a picture of a cosplay let me know ^.^

And how is everyone? Oh and everyones cosplay is so awsome ^.^

Did not enjoy my day 1, waited in the LONGEST LINE I've seen at Kumoricon. I'm not kidding, it killed my day because I ended up waiting in line to pick up my pre-registered badge, for about 2 hours and by the time I got it, I was tired, my feet and back were aching and I missed all the panels I wanted to go to. I'm hoping day 2 will be much better.

I didn't want to make a separate topic for this so I'm glad there already is one.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for being so great and friendly. Sadly, I could only for today, but I had a great time!
This was my first con and I'm glad it went so well. I also wanted to thank all of the cosplayers who let me take pictures of them.
Thanks again guys for an amazing con!

Until next year!

Meh, it could be better. I was cosplaying as Nana (Osaki) from the manga, well, "Nana." A couple people recognized me, so that was fine. But I seriously think it could be better. Last year, I didn't think it was that great, but it was better then, I think.

Also today, there was that weird fire alarm thing, security telling us to scoot, only to find that as we got to the exit, we were allowed back in. -__-

But hey, not so bad. I liked Karaoke on the top floor better last year though, it had a nice view and it was more peaceful.

My friend and I waited in the pre-reg line for three hours, but... it wasn't too bad, I guess. Although I'm probably only saying that because it's over... still, there were lots of random strangers who helped to make the long line/wait fairly enjoyable.  :D

Other than that, I'm having a pretty nice con! Both the hotel staff and con staff I've encountered have been very helpful/courteous.

We haven't been to any panels yet, but we lurked the Artist Alley and Dealer's Hall... and, I personally feel it's a big step-up from last year, because I actually found some things I wanted! It was exciting.  :D Also, the Artist's Alley has some amaaazing artists! The line for the Dealer's Hall was actually moving pretty fast by the time we got there, probably because it was close to closing, but, still, it was pretty quick.

Sounds like there could be even more reg monkies next year.  I know there are quite a few already, that or improved flow?  I know I got sent to someone who wasn't even doing will call and they ended up running over to the other side of the long tables to get some info or my badge before coming back.  Just a bit of communication problems still.

Oh.. and the one thing that really bugged me was in gaming.  We were leaving and the door guy told us to go the other way because of "traffic flow."  If you knew anything about the fire stairs is that there are people going both up and down the WHOLE day, passing each other with no problems.  Instead we were made to go out the designated exit which made you walk the way back up the parking ramp around half the building and then to where ever you want to go.  And all we wanted was to go up 1 floor, which would have taken 20 seconds and took 10+ times the time for no good reason.  If you can get this fixed for day 2 that would be nice.

I thought the line was fun! My sock-less feet disagree, though... I felt awful once I got inside because I had forgotten my parent permission slip, and the guy in front of me was being a pest too, so I had to make the con staff go to extra work to get verbal permission. TT.TT Sorry~!
Um, I was having a lot of stress from out-of-con influences (a person I used to know visited town and made drama), so I was a little frazzled. Apologies also go to anyone who asked an itty-bitty Tenth Doctor for photos or hugs, I was sooooo out of it, even really early in the day, and I'm terrible at recognizing faces which extends to not being able to tell if someone's looking at me when they're speaking in a crowd, AND I'm hard of hearing, so I get the feeling I missed some people... Geh. Monday will be better! (I only say Monday because tomorrow, I'm going in "plain"clothes so I can get more pictures. Tomorrow should be great too.)
Oh, and this was the first con in three years that I remembered to eat AND limited myself to less than five bottles of Ramune in a day. Wow. I gotta keep this up... O.o

The Gaming line is pretty much set in stone, we have to watch our Ballroom level
capacities and so it really comes down to the capacities in each area.

The change in location for gaming is hard I know, but once you get the just of
it, it really isn't so horrible... I've done it a few times now myself... build calf

LOL thats always the tough thing about cosplaying.. will the crowd
know and appreciate your level of detail and realism?

By the by, at 4:00am the con is begining its new day and raring for
Sunday, out at the 24 hour subway I met some awesome people who
have questions about registration... of course that would be when I
realized I'd traded in my Heather Mason outfit for Pajama pants and did
not have my pocket guide on me! Oy!

To the people who came to my filk panel: Thanks! It was fun!

Anybody found any best kept secret paneling at the con this year?
I watched some of guy's Anime Music Video's before my panel.. I love
doing that, and of course I am very partial to Bressler's Whose Line
Panel...

We could only stay Saturday and part of Sunday, but it was good.
We were so busy trying to get to panels that we wanted, we hardly got pictures of the beautiful and creative costumes.
It was awesome finding ourselves in short lines because everyone else was "next door"... an advantage to being new to anime and the con.
Todd H. and Tiffany G. were so charismatic and friendly with everyone.

And even though we didn't dress up this year, it was nice to have people comment on our tees.

Horrid for the most part...
My friend was wandering away from me, so I couldn't find her. Then when I tried to call her, she'd ignore the call. She was rude to people and it embarassed me so much. I'm not taking her next year.

As far as the operation of the con, I actually approached a staff and asked: "Where is the line to the Sonny Strait pannel" and they said: "Sorry, it was cancelled." but later, I found out that it wasn't.
Luckily, I saw him in the vendors, though.
But I am still pretty mad about that...

It was AWESOME.
Even though things where still a lil unorganized, the elevators where much better than last year. Also, not much people attended this year =/
But I also missed the VOCALOID photoshoot T^T and I didn't have time to put on my third cosplay Dx

Everyone that met me and my Danny-Kaito either wanted a hug or a picture xD

My overall con experience this year was much better than past, I have a lot of good things to say and a lot of bad things to say. Though, some of the bad things don't have any contact with the con aside from the people within its space.

I have three main things to say, one good and two bad.
Good; The hotel staff was much more polite and helpful this year. Along with the con staff. You guys really impressed. Thank you guys so much, especially with my situation and the room next to us.

Bad one; I noticed that the con members were being really greedy with elevators and pushing past the clearly disabled. That's not okay, they should be first priority. Always!

Bad two; I'm so sick of hearing.  "Marco!Pollo!" and "I lost the game." Its getting old seriously.

Those are really my only complaints. Other than that this con has been much better than last year.

p.s. There was a total VOCALOID explosion.

I agree with the people that were pushing past the disabled. I got into an elevator with a woman that had a walker and when we got to the lobby, everyone but me pushed past her. I sat there and waited until she was all of the way off the elevator.
And the 'I lost the game' was very annoying, I agree.
The hotel staff were much more polite this year and it was easier for me to find staff, as well.

Yeah, I agree we need to have a lesson on
courtesy when using elevators... I can't count how many
times I had to come and use my magical director badge
powers to convince people to let a person in a wheelchair
get on the elevator so they could get to the ballroom or
23rd floor or basically anywhere!

It shouldn't have to be that way, people should automatically
relinquish the elevator to Disabled attendees... but, we live,
and for the most part those I helped up the elevators were
understanding and nice, it was fun to chat with you all!

Especially the guy I escorted up to the 23rd floor! He was really
funny!

Thank you however, to those of you who DID step out of the Con
Space elevators when you saw someone in a wheelchair or with
a walker/cane trying to get on and up/down. That meant a lot to
me and I'm sure it meant even more to them!

Well, I am getting ready for closing ceremonies, sounds like rant and
rave should be very informative, remember it only lasts 1 hour after
closing ceremonies so if you have a really important question and don't
think you will make it to the R&R, PM or E-mail me and I'll get you back an
appropriate answer. If the question seems very important to the masses
I will even post it here!

Crappy. I didn't do much. Part of it being just being stressed, part of it being that Kumoricon was just a freaking horrible as it was last year. I'm giving it one more chance next year (since we are moving from the terrible Hilton, hooray!) but if it doesn't redeem itself this convention is pretty much dead to me and won't be getting my money ever again.

Day 3: I didn't do much, I went to the dealer's room and bought 2 hollow masks in the far back left corner, from a vendor.....OMG. So, I put them in my bag without looking at them and when I'm heading home on the max, I look at them and they are these cheap, $2 masks that I could have made. They were for $20 a piece, and it turned out to be a $40 mistake. Yes, i should have looked at the masks I bought, but when someone has a wrapped up one on the table, and it's perfect, you think for the price they are, the ones he would give you would be of good quality as well. NOPE! I'm extremely frustrated at myself for not paying more attention to the details of the masks, but I'm more frustrated at the idea that someone can sell something so cheap, like that, to scam people like that, and get away with it. If anyone else bought these masks, I feel sorry for you and feel your pain.

So overall for my convention: Day1; painful and not fun, Day 2; Extremely fun, and made the convention for me, Day 3: I got scammed, plain and simple, and I'll never buy from that vendor EVER again.

My Kumoricon was fairly awesome.

It was much, much more organized this year. Thank you for that, con and hotel staff. Thank you so much.

I stayed in the Executive Tower this year, so I can't say anything about Hilton Elevators. The Executive Tower was awesome, though. The staff were nice and helpful, and we didn't feel like they felt we were subhuman (although I was told that they were nice and helpful last year, too).

There weren't many panels that interested me, but one I really wanted to go to today hit capacity before we got there. However, that's fine- We went to the dealer's hall instead and saw some pretty cool people.

Any complaints I have weren't the fault of the con staff or hotel staff- Aside from the fact that they didn't give the Hetalia PJ Party Panel a large enough room, so they had to cut it into blocks. But that's between the people running the panel and the staff.  :)

All in all, it was awesome and I can't wait until next year!

My feet are hating me from walking everywhere.  Doesn't help that I'm super claustrophobic and pretty much can't stand being in an elevator.  Truth be told though, I don't think walking up nearly a dozen narrow, concrete staircases is much better. xD

'Course, that's no one's fault.  ^^  Just felt like I had to throw a little negativity in somewhere! ^^

Anything that was set up by the con itself seemed to be horribly organized. It started with a two and a half hour to get a sticker on my badge, stuck in a very narrow, poorly ventilated parking garage. Ahead of us were a group of people who thought it was "funny" to scream as loud as possible at every possible moment. Several people asked them to quiet down but they refused. This whole scenario was made worse by the fact that there were only two people running the table where we got the stickers for our bade. And when a friend of ours who was further back in line got there, there was just one. Our friends who were buying their badge that day who got in line at the same time as us got theirs in a fraction of the time.

And here I thought registering in time to get my badge in the mail meant things went more smoothly.

If it weren't for two panels, I would say the whole weekend was a complete waste of money due to every aspect of the con itself being so utterly frustrating.

One thing that really confused me was the sign that said the bathrooms on the main level were inaccessible. In an event that large, that had me baffled.

But the pre-reg line alone was an utter day ruiner, extending really into the whole weekend.

Honestly, the only bad thing people have to say about it seems to be the pre-reg line, which I didn't find all that unbearable (I think I only had to wait 1 1/2 hours).  The rest of the con was amazing, not quite as good as last year, but I personally was better organized, and still got to do everything I wanted.

Cosplay chess wasn't quite as amusing as last year, either, but I did like putting it in the grand ballroom this time.

And hey, the lines were NO WHERE near as bad as Comic-Con.  For serious.

Generally, my Kumoricon was lovely and I enjoyed it very much.  Two quibbles, though.

1) Please, please do not recontract with the Portland Hilton.  I know it was a two-year contract, but now that it's up, please advise the staff to choose a new venue with the panel rooms in a central area, on a minimum number of floors, with easy, open access to all of them.  Also with more elevators.  The Hilton is just horribly put together and cannot handle the kind of crowds that Kumoricon attracts--the hallways and staircases are painfully narrow and it's like navigating a maze blindfolded to find anything.  The wait for the elevators got downright ridiculous; when you have people in high heels deciding to climb ten flights of stairs to get to their hotel room because it's faster and easier than waiting for the elevators, you have a problem.

2) I know it's hard to find staffers, but it would be nice if the registration tables were more thoroughly organized and priority-staffed next year.  (Perhaps the badges could be split up into several boxes/stations alphabetically by last name to speed up the handout process?  It seems to work efficiently at Sakuracon.)  The badge pickup lines really shouldn't have taken as long as they did, and I know the long wait time put a dent in a lot of people's weekends.

That said, I had a great time despite being unable to easily access my hotel room, and I didn't see any of the hotel-staff attitude problems that I'd heard about from last year, so...yes.  Thanks for your hard work, everybody!

ps - Nice filk.   ;D

Oh ya...forgot to mention that the Sake Tasting panel was amazing. Very informative...helped my girlfriend & I find sake that we like a well as teach us some interesting facts about sake in general. The gentlemen in charge of the panel were very helpful in answering my questions as well as recommending me to some good places to get sake in Central Oregon.

It is REALLY hard to find staffers, and the staffers we do find we have to work into the ground
sometimes because other staffers don't show for shifts. Its a game we play every year. And we
love to have more staff, convince your friends, come as a group, join a department and be crazy
at con!

Ugh Vancouver again? Isn't this suppose to be Portland's convention? What ever happened to having it at the double tree by lloyd center? I think that was one of the best venues out of all of them.

I had a really great time, even through a few personal problems that I had. The people were fantastic, the lines were bearable, and I just had an all-around good time. This was my first con ever, so thank you all for making it awesome ^_^

How is that going to work? They're in the same area but not exactly close like the two from this year.

Good Morning,
Well here we are the day after the con, I was pleased to hear all of the feed back from all of the attendees and people that worked the con.  For those of us who worked at the 09 Con we made it a point to improve upon those challenges that everyone faced from the previous year to ensure that this year's con was an enjoyable experience for everyone.  My thanks to Ally and all of the con staff for their assistance this weekend it was a pleasure working with all of you. Best of luck to all of you next year in Vancouver.

Regards,
Patrick Cechini

The Gaming line is pretty much set in stone, we have to watch our Ballroom level
capacities and so it really comes down to the capacities in each area.

This makes no sense.  There was a person watching the door to ballroom for those coming from the stairs, if they were told the room was capped all they had to do was tell people to go back up and wait in line.  This wouldn't have any effect whether people were coming up from gaming or down from the lobby.  Ether way, there was always someone at the door, direction would not have changed the words spoken to those wanting in the ballroom level.  I went up and down the stairs every hour, just about, and never did gaming have any backup with the huge space they acquired this year.  There was no reason to have made people walk up the garage ramp and around half the building just to go up 2 floors.

It would be impossible to task someone with counting both incoming and outgoing attendees simultaneously and have it be anywhere near the accuracy that we require for compliance with fire code. It was necessary to split incoming and outgoing for this reason. We decided to err on the side of caution and I am sorry if you were inconvenienced.

Well I just want to point out to you guys that it did not work, people were going in and out of the ballroom through that door all day every day.  I wouldn't expect a cap to be monitored by just that person, there was 1 elevator and the escalators that were also being used.  However, knowing this I don't see why if you thought cap was going to be hit at some point to stop incoming traffic from the door for a short time.  This still would not have effected gaming, people would have just gone back up after they found out they couldn't go into the ballroom.  I don't want to say you did a poor job, over all I think lines and cap were done much better this year, but the walk out of gaming was completely unnecessary.

Now if we want to talk about crazy.. reg lines are where it is at.  They looked like they were divided up but they still were super slow and unorganized when you got to the table.  Yoji were telling people who were pre registered to go to non role call, and then reg staff would get pissed at not having the info for them because that wasn't who they were suppose to deal with.  The line for registration didn't seem to be improved beyond handing out sign up sheets before they got to the desk.

One word seems to pop up around the convention space. That word is awesome. I that explains to Kumoricon experience. Both panels by Tiffany Grant and Kevin McKeever were excellent. The only problem was too many event schedules conflicted with each other.  I guess that why one need to go to Kumoricon multiple years.  The Hotel did a good job at crowd control preventing the stampede that was after opening ceremony 2009 and were a lot friendlier.  Still I have to rate the hotel a c+, the panel rooms were bigger but  the con space seemed cramped, I still felt  this was not the deal we were promised when Kumoricn left the Doubletree Hotel. My only other disappointment was the video room. My disappointment has to do with the loss of one video room (ok I am spoiled by the past two conventions) and limited playing of other genres.  One other gripe about the Hilton was not providing cheaper options for food, lucky there were closer options. Kumoricn is not “we can pay though the nose and put on the expense report “convention.
Still I give Kumoricon great marks.
One suggestion for next year, we need a con suite, one doesn’t have to provide food but a place we act relax or sit-down with fiends between events. Barring heath or moving, see you all in 2011

My only question why the Vancover Hilton. I remember  mewcon, down town is dead when looking for food options and walking from  Hilton to Red Lion  may be not that great if raining or safe at night  The there thoes with disabilities, will there be a shuttle  van?

HATERS GONNA HATE. Next year is gonna be so badass, we're lucky to be back there.

I almost didn't come this year because I was so dissapointed with last year's con but this year's Kumoricon was way fun and I'm even more excited for next year. Do you guys post the rant and rave stuff? We had to leave after I spoke and I'm interested in reading the rest of it.

GOOD JOB STAFF~

Okay question if it moves to Vancover, WA then how would people without a car get to and from the convention? Does C-train bus run near the hotel? Mainly curious because I don't have any other transpertation then Tri-met to get around and walking. Why not have out at PDX if moving or is it set in stone? Anywho except for crazy 4 hour pre-reg line it was fun and loved taking a lot of pictures. :)
