Rozen: To be fair, I dislike several pairings the various characters cosplay are part of. I don't begrudge the people who do like those pairings, so jumping up and doing generic poses with other people of that pairing isn't going to kill me. But it's your choice what you do and choose to participate in, and don't let anyone try to guilt trip/tell you otherwise. c:

Kyo: I was actually working on adding variants. I only managed to get a few down before I decided sleeping sounded like a fun thing to do.

All cosplayers with actual flags: DO NOT LET YOUR FLAG TOUCH THE GROUND. It is as disrespectful in that country as it is in ours. If you can, get a flagpole.
DO NOT WEAR YOUR FLAG AS A CAPE. Seriously.
DO NOT HAVE PEOPLE SIGN/DRAW ON YOUR FLAG.
All cosplayers in general: RESPECT PERSONAL SPACE. Especially Russias and Prussias, you guys get carried away rather frequently - or so I have found it to be.

God, i can't even tell you how angry i get with people disrespecting flags. In my opinion, i don't even think flags are necessary for the cosplay. I mean, it's not like the actual characters are carrying around flags all the time. I'd much rather see a Russia with his pipe or vodka, or an England with a flying mint bunny plush or a tea cup, or an Italy with pasta, rather then an actual flag. You know, considering it's canon in the series.

Ugh, this this this. I suffer so much secondhand embarrassment seeing how other Prussias act. Also, adding to this: Don't make rape jokes. At all. They're not funny and they're potentially triggering. You might be saying them for laughs, but you could be reminding someone of the worst and most traumatic experience of their life.

I'll admit to having worn my flag as a cape before, but Prussia isn't a country anymore and hasn't been for about 80 years. Still, though, I try not to.

Nah. It's everywhere internet connection can be had.
You want to portray yourself in the absolute best light you can, as if one picture of you breaking what people see as proper etiquette gets leaked to the wrong place (And I'm not even talking about 4chan), there'll be a huge uproar over it
(See the Otakon flag incident, and that wasn't all that horrible on its own, but the fallout....)

I will be editing the first post and adding in some basic tips that hopefully will help prevent a huge mess.

- Rape is never funny, so refrain from making jokes about it
- Respect Other's Personal Space

I'd like to add that it's important to make everyone attending the shoot feel involved, but without being forceful! There are a lot of shy people out there, but with the right kind of encouragement, I think it will be easier for them to get envolved, and will perhaps make them feel more comfortable! And of course, a little kindness always goes a long way!
I have seen a lot of the more shy people (myself included) get sort of ignored and left out ... and it's not the most wonderful feeling in the world, so yes, that's my two cents!

Raven: The way the shoots are structured, the extent of your participation is determined entirely by you. Either you go up when your costume is called or you don't. If you go up, someone will get pictures of you.

Roze: Dude, flags on the ground are never okay. Verging on negative okay and heading into offensive disrespect for other people's nations. If you really need to deal with stuff in your hands, ask someone to hold your flag for you, or prop it up somewhere you know it won't fall.


I know not everyone values flags as symbols, or they think they're "just cloth," but for people who do care, it really hurts to have your heritage and your pride treated so thoughtlessly. I know Hetalia is a joke series, but you're still dealing with things that have weight in the real world. If you don't give and craps about national pride or politics and want to see it all burn or whatever, the Hetalia fandom still isn't a good context in which to make that sort of statement.

Discussing a subject isn't "hateful energy". Just because they happen to disagree on a topic and are discussing it doesn't mean that they're bickering.

Also, I doubt most people would be upset by seeing their flag carried around, but dropping it on the ground and using it as a cape is rude, especially if the country is still around and if you happen to be in that country.

As for Americans blowing it out of proportion. . Something tells me Ukrainians wouldn't like seeing their flag on the ground, and neither would, say, the Japanese.

Thanks kyo, Also... I met a girl last year who had her flag taken right out of her hand. So I think people shouldn't grab other's flags to. I know you guys wouldn't want to steel a flag but its not nice to take people's things any way. But you all know what. (XD just a reminder)

On anouther note, I am in the ball-joint doll hobby. And I infact came across a company who made two hetalia dolls. They all ready made Roderich. Even though on the site the doll in the stock images doesn't look any thing like Roderich, the ceator infact made the head to look like the character.
And now she is working on a Germany, or Ludwig. He isn't done yet and she is even making him his own body, But I just thought I should share this with you guys. (I know not every one likes dolls and if you don't you don't have to look.)

One thing that gets me is the people who do flag rutines as skits using nations flags. That is EXTREMELY disrespectful to the flags and the nations. Americans are extremely flipant in our use of the flag, for goodness sake we make boxers and bakinis out of it, but other nations hold their flag in as an dear symbol of their nation.

Flag respect is one of the reasons I don't bring my flags to con... on that note I am cosplaying from SatW who's shirts are their nation's flags.

I think that it would just be a hassle to bring a full-size flag to con (with having to take care of it all the time and whatnot). I'm not even bringing a small one. It just seems irrelevant to (Hetalia) cosplay, even if you are cosplaying a country. (Someone made the point earlier that the characters don't even carry around their flags in the manga/anime... ever, and that's kinda what I'm getting at also... But with SatW, you can't really help the flag on the shirt thing. XD)

Raven: Alright, I'll find a way to work it in. c: I don't forsee a lot of such incidents at Kumo, since people are generally great at gently encouraging people to pop up on stage when their character is called up.

RozenMaiden_Girl: While you obviously didn't know the extent of the situation, try to avoid such situations in the future. As it isn't just America 'overblowing' it. We don't want to show a negative attitude towards flag etiquette, as other countries do place a lot of value onto flags, and there is a pretty vocal backlash should such behavior make it to the internet.

KyoKyo866: Honestly, I'd rather have this 'hateful energy' from discussing it and getting it laid out on the table, then have a full-out incident occur. YES, there are people who do probably take such an attitude to extreme levels, but it is better to be safe for nothing, than sorry for something.


Essentially, I'm not asking for, or expecting, everyone to be godlike. Just show respect for the flag (and your fellow cosplayers), and nothing bad should/will happen.

No offense, but considering she's the one running this photoshoot, it might be a good idea to listen to her. I hate to say this, but you don't have to look at this thread all the time, and we have had multiple conversations going on at once in here before. If you don't want to see it, you can easily ignore it.

Second point: People still don't understand that this is bad. You do, and that's great. But keep in mind the fandom. This is the only fandom where people will take pictures of themselves doing Nazi salutes in German cosplay on Yom Hashoa a block away from a Holocaust memorial. This is a fandom where people think it is okay to draw all over flags. Shi and I don't want to be posted all over /cgl/ on 6 September because someone did something stupid at a shoot we ran, Otakon-style.

Like Shi said, it's an important subject and needs to be talked about, because not everyone in the fandom knows basic social rules and/or basic etiquette. Considering last year a random stranger tried to drag her away from where she was standing at Kumoricon, I'd say we have to worry about these types of people at Kumo, too.

I would like to discuss this calmly with you, but if need be, we can take it to PMs.
