Cosplay Gym?
« on: September 09, 2010, 06:59:09 pm »
So not sure if this is the right spot (if not i'm sure the admins will change it), but here goes!
I created a group on facebook called "cosplay gym" for those of us who are looking to get in shape for our cosplay and such. I thought it would be good for people *coughlikemecough* who like to have some encouragement, but whos friends don't cosplay. so here's the link: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=153270698024008  I made it an open group, so feel free to join!!
2013 (in the works): Soi Fong (Bleach), Faith (Mirrors Edge), Agito/Akito (Air Gear)
Stay tuned for more information at a later date.

Great idea! I like the idea of joining up and encouraging each other. So, I joined too.

My next two cosplays, Barret and Ward, are bulky guys, so I will need to focus on shedding some surface-layer fat and toning my muscle.

I bought this eBook weight loss program recently.  I've used the guy's other programs before and figured it was worth putting down $67.  I have not been disappointed so far.  Not sure if I've lost as much fat as I would have liked, but I have lost some.  Most of the lack of fat loss is my own fault since I'll get distracted and forget to eat food, which slows down my metabolism.

But the biggest boon for me has been my increase in athleticism.  My explosive movements have improved, I'm quicker on my feet, I can sprint quicker with less effort, I can jump higher, etc.  I'm really loving it. ^^

Do you have a place to workout, with equipment or weights? If so, I'd encourage you to try a few different lifts every two months or so. There are plenty great tutorials, but this one has been really helpful to me. Just pick one or two for each muscle group and cycle through 1-3 times a week for a couple months, then pick some others or increase the weight. It works great! (Of course diet is a factor too, but I don't know quite as much about that.)

Wha? Funny? The article isn't particularly funny.  Although that guy (Chad Waterbury) is one of my favorite contributors to that site, and his articles do frequently contain some good doses of humor.  I'm currently doing an eBook program he wrote for fat loss and it's really good.  It cost me $67. ^^;

Other articles on there tend to be pretty funny.

It's a bit over the top with all the roided out dudes (which I think are awesome) and the babes (I enjoy looking at scantily clad women as much as the next guy/girl but I'd feel uncomfortable reading that site in front of other people.)

So, how was everyone's weekend? Any workout progress/stories?

My weekend was pretty rough actually (not in the good way). I was working all weekend, so didn't have a chance to workout, and yesterday I was just too exhausted and stricken with le ennui to get up and do anything, but hopefully the rest of this week will see me at the gym.

Have a great week, everyone!

I went to the gym yesterday and worked on my legs as well as 30 minutes of cardio and today I jogged for 30 minutes. I also need to vacuum my room so that will help burn a few more calories :3

not really. The muscle there is quite strong I just need to lose a little bit of fat. If I did I think I would have a very nice six pack going. I can still do triple digits of crunches and not feel anything the next day. >_> I guess I can thank soccer for that :P

That was always crazy to me (the numbers you could pull with crunches). Well, keep up the great work. You definitely have the most discipline out of the people I know. I've been building a lot of muscle, but I still don't really look any different 'cause I need to burn off the covering layers. So, that's gonna be my goal for this next year. Got.to.buuuuuurn.

So my workout yesterday was a good one. I did some circuit weight-training, working my biceps and forearms, which has left me with dead arms today. That's always a nice sign of progress.

I have also started doing Cable Crunches, which have been working really well for targeting and working my abdominal muscles. Of course, that's not all I need to do, but it was a good start to my week.

Capped the workout off with some quad-focused lifts, giving me an overall soreness today. Making progress (hopefully). Today should probably be a cardio/tricep/delt day.

But, oh well, I've got a gym so I guess that's better than nothing.

Had another solid workout today. Dang, though...my abs may be hidden, but they are going to be solid anyway! These Cable Crunches are really working well. If anyone is looking to work the abs and has access to some gym equipment, I'd recommend giving it a shot.

That aside, I didn't get to any cardio (unfortunately), but I still got a nice overall workout in all the extremities. And I'm gonna have salad and stuff for dinner (a la Sweet Tomatoes), so yay for that!

Well, at least you have the forums and cosplay gym to support and encourage you. Do you have access to a gym or any equipment? If not, brisk walking or jogging around the block can be a great start.

@Nikki: Good job making the decision and putting effort to your goal! I know what you mean, school sapped me of a lot of my drive and it can be easy to buckle and drop your goal, but stick with it! I know you'll get to where you want if you focus and don't let anyone or anything derail you.  :) Do you go to any specific gym?

@Eve- I will try my best this time! I keep dropping out of it. I get too busy with school, or a combination of school and cosplay and drop it sadly enough. But I'm going to do my best to get as much cosplay stuff done over my break and I'm gonna stick with doing a costume a con for awhile (so I can rewear my lovely new ones :D)
And I don't go to a gym really, it's too expensive. We have a little work out room in our little district thingy we live in. Its free and has some treadmills and weights so I just go there.

Ah, well that's good then. Making a plan is 75% of accomplishing a goal (I'm full of these motivational phrases, chock-fullofem ^_^). And that's nice that you have open access to equipment of some kind. There are so many different ways you can stimulate your muscles and target different body parts, even the most basic equipment could probably do you wonders if you can find the right routines. I'd definitely suggest looking up some workouts, I've got several pages of them, by body part. Once you get into a routine, your physical exhaustion and soreness becomes an addiction and it can be really rewarding, feeling your progress and then seeing your progress. It keeps me going anyway.

If there are any specific body parts you're trying to target, let me know and I can pass some workouts your way.  :)

I wish I had a workout buddy... I had one lined up for awhile, but he didn't pan out. I'm really disappointed that I haven't taken up running like I said I would, but I just can't shake the feeling that I look stupid by myself. I mean somehow I've continued to lose weight so I'm down to about 35 pounds lost, but I know if I want to lose that last ten pounds or more and tone up, that just watching my food intake and keeping busy isn't going to be enough. Somebody set me straight! I'm ridiculous I just ate a fricken ice-cream cone, then again I barely ate today but still. Sorry I'm rambling, it's just the stress talking.... =/

I think my biggest problem is that I'm embarrassed to talk about getting fit 'cause I'm not good at it. At all. I love to watch sports and I like to partake in them sometimes... as long as it doesn't matter that I suck. Rarely am I in a situation though where I'm not self conscious of lookin' pathetic. And eating healthy is great and all but it's hard when I looooooove things I shouldn't. Starch is delicious, y'know.

And if I'm ever goin' to look better to myself then something has gotta change. I've been obsessed with my weight since grade school - that's over a decade of hating how I look - and I'm tired of not doing enough about it.

TL;DR - LET'S DO THIS!

... now, how do I do it? ???

So far I've cut sodas and most junkish foods (though that's more out of lack of money than anything, sadly) and I try and walk where I need to go instead of asking for a ride... but that gets difficult when my destination is a two hour walk in the rain when I need to look presentable for handing in a job application. =/

Anyway, thanks for lettin' me get that out. This feels like rocket surgery when ya just let it well up in your head, y'know?
