English 101
« on: October 03, 2010, 10:16:02 pm »
So, it has come to my attention that quite a few people on the forums lack the grammatical skills taught in grade school.
I have concluded that perhaps this is because they have forgotten these lessons despite their necessity in life.
Therefore, I have decided to help those who have forgotten and refresh their memory with this thread. (I am not a grammar Nazi but I do appreciate a well written/typed sentence.)
Feel free to toss in your own two cents about what you think people need to remember about grammar!

Lesson One: There, Their, They're
There - A place | The car is over there.
Their - Ownership | That is their car.
They're - They are | They're washing the car.

Lesson Two: To, Too, Two
To - Direction/Motion | I am going to the store
Too - A lot, Also | There is too much. OR I am going, too.
Two - A number | There are two cats.

Lesson Three: Your, You're
Your - Ownership | Is that your dog?
You're - You are | You're an idiot.

Lesson Four: 'i' before 'e'
"This is only true after the letter 'c'" is a lie. (Weird, Neighbor, Weigh, Weight, etc.)

Lesson Five: l337
if u type liek dis den we shot u (If you type like this, then we will shoot you.)
Seriously, type like a normal human being.

Lesson Six: Alot
I love this Alot.

Lesson Seven: CAPITALS (For Reppy only)
THIS DOES NOT MEAN SHOUTING ANYMORE. It just means you want attention which will not be given because you are posting in an annoying way.

Lesson Eight: No, Know
No - A denial | No, I did not kill that man.
Know - Intellect | I know the answer.

Lesson Nine: Its, It's
Its - Ownership | Its paint job is nice.
It's - It is | It's not that pretty.

Lesson Ten: Choose, Chose
Choose - Present | I choose you, Pikachu!
Chose - Past | I chose Bulbasaur...!

Lesson Eleven: Loose, Lose
Loose - Not tight | That bow is loose.
Lose - Did not win | You lose.

Lesson Twelve: Our, Hour
Our - Possessive "we" | That is our house.
Hour - Time | It is in the twelfth hour.

Addition:

Your - Shows ownership. "Is that your dog?"

You're - the contraction of 'you are'. "You're very welcome."

I don't know if this is just me or not, and I'm not sure how to phrase it as nicely as you guys have been doing, but punctuation is key. Commas, periods, semicolons, apostrophes, whatever it takes, they are important! Otherwise all meaning behing a statement can be completely garbled and taken in a way seperate from how it was intended.

If I can find a way to put that into a lesson, I will add that. >.>
But at this moment, I don't know how to phrase it where people would understand how to use them.
I think I will go hit up a dictionary to directly define the punctuation itself and maybe I can do it that way...?

and if u type liek dis n no1 no's wut ur tlkin about and STOP. Just stop. Type like a normal, literate human being and the rest of us that MANAGE to will grace you with a response.

This blog post pretty much sums up some grammar for me:

http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html

So unless you want people to think you only have two fingers or you're a bald eagle, type like you want everyone to understand you. :)

And remember, kids: The Alot is better than you at everything.

Just sayin'.

"I'm JUST a damn human. I make mistakes that I didn't mean to do, but my finger slipped. Sorry."                        I'm sorry but I counted at least 5 or 6 spelling and grammar errors. Also even if it was a slip of the key you COULD proof read your post before posting. Then you could fix all of your errors :3

Point one - When I saw this thread, I first thought that it was talking about a college course.  Mine was fun; we'd get extra credit just because we'd show up on days where it was sunny outside.

Point two - I'm so glad that someone has started making this type of thread.  People need to read it and have it grafted into their minds.

Addendum:

It's means "it is." For example:
It's so hot today!
Its is the possessive for it. For example:
The red car was cool. Its paint job was totally awesome.

Addendum the Second:
Our is possessive for we. For example:
That is our house. We own it.
Are is a conjugation of the verb "to be." For example:
We are going to the store.

What I REALLY don't understand is the people who use 'time' or 'laziness' as an excuse. If you have time to POST here in the first place then you DEFINITELY have time to be literate. Being lazy and illiterate are BAD things that people will see you as if you can't be bothered enough to try. I really appreciate reading a grammatically correct post, it gives the poster credibility.

Especially for you people on here that like to argue with others, when you can't be bothered to use punctuation and capital letters because you are lazy or you don't have time, it really lowers any respect whomever you're arguing with will have for you.

I personally respect those who do type out their words and end their sentences with periods a lot more than those who type 'how duz dis werk?' when asking a question, or advice or even just making conversation.

You shouldn't have to MAKE TIME to be literate. It's not that hard, that's a sad excuse.
No one else should have to make the extra effort to decode what you say, we communicate through WORDS. Use them!
I miss 2010.

Ooo, another one to mention is the difference between 'choose' and 'chose' and 'loose' and 'lose.' This one bugs me so much.

Choose - present-tense. What will you choose?
Chose - past-tense of choose. He chose to be a staff member at Kumoricon this year.

Loose - Adjective. Baggy, not tight. She wore loose clothing.
Lose - Verb. To misplace. Also the opposite of win. I always lose at poker.

Honestly typeing in L337 or other shorter languages that take up space was first used by the military in satalite uplink texts which required as little overhead as possible. It then made its way to the internet and bullatin boards where it has become something of its own. Some people take it to the extreme while others simply use it in daily life for laziness or convienience. Regardless people have a right to speak or type as they see fit. Being a grammer or punctuation nazi is just going to get you disliked or start flame wars and division on the forums. so in short....

Regardless people have a right to speak or type as they see fit.

But in that term of mind, people have a right to complain about things as they see fit.
Being a grammer or punctuation nazi is just going to get you disliked or start flame wars and division on the forums.

A lot of people are just going out of their way to do things like that though, hahahaha.

Jaz - I understand people making a small error here or there and the sort but it is when people completely disregard the thought of grammatical correctness that it gets on my nerves. I have some friends that literally just can't spell worth crap and English is their first language. They just have a hard time with it and never picked up on spelling since computers can auto-correct and rarely anything is handwritten anymore. But when a person talks in chat speak even though they have the ability to spell correctly, it just blows my mind. I find it harder to type liek diz n i haz to slow dwn me typing to tri n git it rite and even then I know I am "not doing it right." That is, if there is actually a correct way of doing it. I wouldn't know.

As for Wednesday, I hope this link helps you!

Kylite -
But people have taken this L337 speak to a whole new level. Those in the military all would have been able to read it because that is what they were all trained in reading. Not everyone on the internet can read it.
And yes, people do have the right to speak or type as they see fit. Which also gives us the right to type and speak as we see fit. Plus, as Boogie has stated, we have the right to type out our complaints. Some people type incorrectly because they are ignorant. We are here to help those who wish to better themselves. I, personally, am not trying to start a huge war. I am simply trying to educate people on proper grammar as I happen to be someone who loves the English language. Being a lover of English, I hate seeing it butchered like a chicken and watching the blood splatter all over the walls as the body flails around.

Being a grammar Nazi will not get anyone disliked by those who are worth something. Anyone who gets angry over a simple, friendly correction of grammar seriously needs to get checked into a counselor for anger management.
The only way a war shall begin here is if people do not respect us. We are not attacking anyone in particular and therefore, we should not be attacked. We are simply stating our beliefs as is our right through the Constitution and anyone who tries to stop us from saying our own two cents is a hypocrite.

that said. having someone correct you every time you speak, regardless of how patient you may be, will wear you down until you snap. so go on correcting and helping but pelase try not to push it too far. people dont liek being told their messing up over and over and over

Especially for you people on here that like to argue with others, when you can't be bothered to use punctuation and capital letters because you are lazy or you don't have time, it really lowers any respect whomever you're arguing with will have for you.
Good thing I use decent grammar, yeah?  ;) It's my saving grace.

As for Wednesday, I hope this link helps you!

Maybe people should strive to do better, and listen to the corrections from time to time...  (Hey, I'm studying to be an English teacher; many of these "issues" naturally annoy me).

Who and Whom
Distinction: Who is used as a subject. Whom is used as an object.

This is the one I fail at all the time. I can type with almost perfect grammar- But then who and whom show up and screw things up. ):
