Look at the location; it's like that for almost any place on/near a university.

Ok, seriously, we are freaking twins now, like, offically. My birthday is March 16th. And I'm turning 18! (Repeating myself but the fact we have so much in common is like woah!)

This is relevant to my interests except I'm hoping to go to SOU.

It seems like it all depends on the person and time management in general. If Richie can make the amazing costumes she does and take 16 credits then I think I can peck on the easier parts of mine. I personally am interested in the Theater Arts - Costume Design program so it'd probably be easier to work on cosplay for me than someone with say, an Engineering or Physics focus.

Tally ho, man!

Sahara, you should talk to Felix about working on cosplay while at SOU. She spends a lot of time bitching about the nearest fabric store being in Medford.

SOU=Southern Oregon University. It's in Ashland.

Wahahaha, Medford's not even that far away!

Like Malaria said SOU is for Southern Oregon University in Ashland, it's the best school in the worlddd, for me at least, haha. It's right next to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival so the kids do internships with them all the time, they've got so many awesome programs and clubs (BEST ACAPELLA GROUP EVER, FFF), tuition is almost as cheap as a community college, and I could go on, it's really quite lovely.

Preview day is next Friday, the 12th! YEAHHH BEBEH

It's kinda far if you don't have a car. XD

SOU also has giant budget issues, but what that really means is you get longer breaks.

Oooh, I will have to inquire about that next Friday. And I'll either have a car or a scooter, If I get in I'll have to buddy up with Felix and we can go on fabric adventures!

To be more on topic, Katie, if you do what Nikki said and stick to working mostly on breaks or when you have excessive free time I'm sure you'll manage. ~

Do they ever do any "campaigning" or "advertising" elsewhere?  You know, like doing brief performances at schools or whatever?  I wouldn't mind seeing them in action some day, but I have no way of going down that far South for something like that; at least not yet...

With all due respect, I rather dislike you and how you chime in even if you have nothing worthwhile to say or contribute.

SOU has a cosplay club and since it's in a pretty creative area I'm optimistic, it'd be really fun to recruit people for cosplayin' videos and stuff~

Wow, way to come off negatively... you two couldn't have been respectable about it?  How about "Sorry, Washougal, girl time!" instead of "I rather dislike you" or "stop stickin' your nose in here."  At least fleur has nice conversational skills...

Not that I don't have time.

I usually don't have class from 11:30 until 2 on any given day. Except Thursdays. Bad, bad Thursdays. Evil Thursdays. I have sections for two of my classes on Thursdays D:

If you're going to form an official club at U of O, you might be able to do events and/or fundraisers that could pay for your way to Kumoricon, or some other convention.  My anime club has been to Sakura-con, Anime Expo, and Anime Evolution by doing this.  that would definately be something worth looking into, that is, if you're planning on making a legitimate campus club.

*sheepishly raises hand* Er... technically, that's not a rebuttal. (Not that one was required.) "With all due respect" is one of my favorite ambiguous phrases, because it's still true even if the amount is zero.

But since everything's civil, it's all fine by me. *puts back on his kuroko outfit and scoots back into the background*

So I don't really cosplay, so instead I'll use music, my band, etc.

The trick when working with small spaces like dorms, a corner in a friend's living room, your dad's attic, et cetera, is to know what you care about and optimize it.  Drop your nick-knacks and side-projects and focus on the things you're really into.  When I started college I had to give up some things that I could no longer do with the space available to me, such as carpentry, metalcraft, ceramics, and painting, in order to make room for my music.  You'll have room for a hobby, but pretty much only one.  I don't even really play a lot of games anymore despite having a fairly good-sized section of my space and a decent chunk of my assets dedicated to video games.

You may also have to find some other space to use.  For about 9 months my band rented a rehearsal studio to practice and record in.  Check with friends and see if maybe you could keep some of your stuff at their place and use their living room or something to work on costumes if your dorm is too cramped.  You shouldn't have to give up cosplay and costuming due to spacial restraints, although if you're currently taking up a lot of space with your work you may need to condense things to be more efficient.  The real constraint is time.  Along with starting college comes a lot of time commitments beyond just classes and homework.  If you have a history of keeping up with a lot of extra-curricular clubs and such, it shouldn't be an issue, but if you're used to having a lot of completely "free" free time, you'll probably be pretty disappointed unless you're specifically setting aside days to be completely free of plans.  That means you'll probably have to set aside specific times in your schedule to work on cosplay and commissions if you don't do so already.

WHY AM I ALWAYS LATE TO ALL THE GOOD THREADS

Anyways, I know I'll bring my sewing machine, but I'm not sure if I'll use it in my dorm D: That thing is so loud and I don't want to disturb anyone. And like Sahara, I'm also interested in majoring in Theatre with emphasis on Costume Design, so I'm sure we'll discover opportunities to work on costumes for cons.

granted, I goto a vocational program, and I rent out my own room, but i am indeed into college and making my own cosplay. I also have a part time job, and goto school 5 days a week, 5 hours a day to give you an idea of how much time I have.

Basically, cosplay follows me around, even during school. While the instructor is late getting to class, i'll pull out patterns and plans, etc. While i'm researching something on the computer, I might have plastic molding guides up in the background.

If you happen to still live within sensible driving of home, I'd also suggest keeping the big guns (sewing kits/machines/wigs/dyes) at home, while doing measuring, cutting, and small stitching in the dorm.

And like others said, be ready for break/vacations to use those big guns and start putting it together.

And HIDE that stufff when you're not working on it. Why? Shame? No. Because rogue soda can or greasy pizza crust of a dormmate can... let's just say, it's not pretty.

You really shouldn't worry about disturbing anyone.  I'm sure all the dorms have a curfew for a certain noise level, just like in every city for residential areas.  Eventually most people learn that someone is always making noise during the day, and that they don't care/think about disturbing others.  During the day go crazy, if someone thinks you are too loud think about how often people are disturbing you while trying to nap and tell them to talk to the RA if they care that much.

It should be okay during the daytime.  Most sewing machines aren't too loud, and the ones that are, usually have a steady rhythmic sound to them, so they can be somewhat soothing after awhile.  (At last I think so...)

I go to WOU (remember guys there are more than 3 universities in oregon---) and while I have yet to actually sew in my dorm, I've had plenty of time to do so.

I'm in a freshman dorm, LANDERS but it's the largest freshman dorm and there's plenty of space (...for a one-room shared dorm, anyways.) and next year I'll be moving into a larger, 3-room dorm.  Tons of space.  I brought my machine with me in the middle of the term to work on a halloween costume (only to discover that my idea was against the rules so i had to scrap it ;-; ) and brought some fabrics and things... When you're not using it it's easy to store the machine to the side, put the fabrics in drawers... I'm not really seeing how this is that difficult.  I took the minimum number of credits, but the average is just 3 more, so those 3 hours spread out over an entire week can't possibly be that bad.  Just make time.  If it's important to you, finish your homework early or whatever and then get to it.  I've found time to beat 2 full length console rpgs, work on many pictures, do all my homework, eat adequately, see my friends, and sleep.  You're supposed to learn this time management crap in college anyways.

But even if working during the school days is hard, you have breaks.  Long, wonderful breaks... I sew very very quickly, so maybe this is less of an issue for me than for others, but if you can get to it and just devote some time it should be easy to keep cosplaying.  During high school I sewed mostly during breaks and on weekends anyways.

My school's smaller, and has a dry campus (not that that really means anything in terms of the drinking going on, but if people are being loud you can bust them) but as long as you don't have a screaming sewing machine it shouldn't really bother people if you keep the door closed  and maybe do quieter things in the "quiet hours" of the dorm.
lol peer pressure
