OK, I'm happy because both of these photo shoots are seeming like they are very likely to happen (90%+ probability).  But in situations like this where location rental must be arranged, I will not say it is 100% until a contract is signed.  I hope that will happen soon.  (For those who don't know, renting a theater is not a simple thing, it involves contracts and insurance, and various stuff that is somewhat tricky to arrange.)

The photo shoot on Jan 15th at the theater will be limited to a maximum of 20 people.  I don't think that will be any problem, because so far less than 20 people have said they would come to it.

The photo shoot on Dec 30th will probably be at a photo studio in NW Portland that I have used for other photo shoots in the past.  For that one I'll probably want to limit it to around 10 people but I can be somewhat flexible on that.

This is probably a good time to say some of my standard disclaimers:

These are not official Kumoricon events.  I do not work for Kumoricon and I'm not affiliated with them.  I'm doing this because I like Kumoricon and the local cosplay community, and this is a chance to do something fun for everyone.

There is no charge to participate in this event and have your photo taken.  This is just for fun.  In this case, unlike some of the other photo shoots where there were no associated costs, location rental is involved, so I am spending quite a bit of my own money to make this possible.  I will not require anyone to pay anything, but if you feel that you can afford it and would like to make a small donation towards the cost of renting the location, I would appreciate it.   

People appearing in the photos that I take at these photo shoots are welcome to freely use the photos for any purpose they wish, including posting them online, making prints, etc.  People who use my photos must credit me as the photographer.  In return, I can also freely use my photos for any purpose, including posting them to my own web sites, or any other use.

I will post more specific details in the next week or so.

For Dec 30th, don't worry about it, I'll cover that one, no donations needed.  For Jan 15 at the theater (assuming that happens), it is looking like the total cost will be around $250.  (I originally thought it would be closer to $200 but it turned out to be more once everything was included.)

In terms of renting a theater, it is a bargain.

For me it is a real expense, and I may not do it again, but having a photo shoot in a theater is something I've wanted to do for a long time, and I've learned to take these kinds of opportunities when they are available.

I don't mean in the Inara Serra sense :3 You could see the universe~ I must warn you that there is an awful lot of running to do, though!

I'll be happy to help with any of the photographers' lighting or anything else, especially since I'm a TA major and I'm supposed to know things like this nowadays :]

Quick update: I'm happy to report that the shoot on Dec 30th at the studio has been confirmed, so this will definitely happen.

Tomorrow I will try to finalize things for the shoot on Jan 15 at the theater.


Brief summary for Dana: planning 2 cosplay photo shoots, Dec 30 from 7-10pm at a photo studio (confirmed) and Jan 15 from noon-4pm at a small theater (not yet confirmed but very likely).  You've been to a previous shoot with me so you know how it works, but these are indoors so we can set up more equipment, computers, lights etc.  Hope you can make it.

If you mean the studio, it is 917 NW 19th in Portland. The funny thing about the place is that it is a great place but it is at the end of a very scary looking alley. Like if it was in an anime, and the characters went into an alley like this, you would just know for sure that someone was about to get attacked by a vampire because that's the only thing that could possibly happen there.  But it's completely safe, really.

If you mean the theater, I will only give out info after negotiations are complete and everything is finalized.  That is just how these things work.

Great news, everything has been worked out with the theater, so we are on for the shoot on Jan 15!

Some more details:  The theater is the Profile Theater, 3430 SE Belmont Street, Portland. http://profiletheatre.org/

It is a small theater, "black box" style, so the floor, ceiling and walls are black and there is seating on 3 sides.  The stage is not raised (well actually sometimes it is, but it won't be when we are there), so picture the stage being on the floor level, while the seats are raised around it stadium-style.  There are 2 dressing rooms that we can use, a small one right next to the stage, and a larger one that is a little farther away down a hallway.

There will be a set there for the performance they are doing that night -- I haven't seen it yet but they say it will be some kind of basic "living room" type furniture.  But we will be allowed to move things around if they are in our way.  Their stage manager will be there to supervise.  We will also be allowed to bring our own props and other items if we want to, so think about what you want to bring.

We will be allowed to change their lighting, but only by changing the brightness of the various lights, we cannot move or re-aim the lights.  This shouldn't be a problem.   We can also bring our own photographic lighting, which I will do.

This will be great and I'm really looking forward to it.
