Important Question about Time Travel.
« on: January 11, 2011, 07:06:12 pm »
Is it morally acceptable to use the time machine to make booty calls?

By this, of course, I mean, you can travel into the past, and sleep with Marilyn Monroe. Or Mark Strickson in the 80's when he was sexyfine. Or Ada Lovelace. Or anyone you wanted.

Theoretically, is this an alright thing to do? My vote is yes because it would be amazing and also I can't see it disrupting the fabric of space-time too much, really. Thoughts?

Sure, as long as they're willing to sleep with you. (That might be a difficult matter all by itself.)

Depends.
If you're a gal, you'd want to watch out and make sure not to get pregnant. Guys would need to watch out for getting a gal pregnant.
Other then that, probably not really.
Unless, of course, you somehow managed to get them to fall in love with you, missing you and wishing for you like a lovesick puppy.
So, I guess, with precautions, you could do it just fine.

(Only you. Only you.)

There is no answer. If you did it, it was right.
Because it's the past, it already happened before you even decided or were born.

Just so long as you use protection (like condiments ;D ) and don't tap the family tree.

Digging the Marilyn Monroe ref after the Doctor Who Christmas Carol ep ;) Which brings up the point of, well, er, probably best not to get married and leave someone unable to get divorced because you're now in another relative dimension of space & time & can't sign the papers.

But heck yeah, who wouldn't?

That's if we're assuming time is set in stone and not a variable.
But I go down that topic any more this thread will just end up confusing people.

Depends on how your time machine works and which direction you're traveling.

For the past: If you have a self-correcting paradox algorithm like most popular time machine designs, you're good to go.  If you have no correction device to avoid paradox, then no, absolutely not.  If you use a correction device that operates by generating an alternate universe which is identical to our own up until the point ti-2, with an input parameter to specify which reality you want to travel to (this is actually a reality replicator; not an actual time machine), go for it.  Over and over again.

Don't make booty-calls in the future.  You might accidentally sleep with your future daughter and get shot by your future self.

ky: But wouldn't that be kinda like getting so blitzed that even though you have a great time, you have to get other people to tell you about it?

Tofu: Saw a European film kinda like that once. A really, really weird European film.

Man: *throws out bait* But time's always a variable. Heck, even the passage of time is variable depending on your frame of reference.

Rem: Me, but I'm just different.

Wash: Oh, dear Lord. Now I have the image of you waggling your eyebrows meaningfully while holding up squeeze bottles of ketchup and mustard. I'm going to go dip my brain in Clorox after this post...

fleur: Even if someone has been watching waaaay too much perverted anime and climbs the family tree to become their own ancestor?

sound: Interesting POV, and it's nifty that both you and Rem's first thoughts are for the well-being of your theoretical lover.

I would probably end up bringing those critters that attack the church in Father's Day (excellent 9/Rose ep) because I'd want to go back and change a decision or two in my own life.....or save others' lives.....Those tend to be no-no's that create paradoxes....

Man: Darn. I was really hoping I could get you into a debate on relativity. ;)  And I would agree about missing Fleur's point... to be honest, I was being silly.

Rem: Thank you - sometimes it really helps just to have someone who understands and doesn't think it's the weirdest thing they've ever heard. :) Just curious, because it vaguely touches on the subject - ever watch Butterfly Effect?

No man, you don't get it.
You can't mess up the past, it's already happened. Okay, remember that show "That's so Raven" right. The main character could see the future and always tried to change it, but in trying to change it, she made it happen.
That's how it works. Bad example, but I think you know what I mean.

No that's one theory on how it works, the another theory is changes in the past happen on concurrently with the future ala Back to the Future. What happened in the past gradually caught up with the present so someone with knowledge of the present would be aware of the changes happening as they happened.
Yet another theory is while the past is changed the changes automatically happen in the present changing everyones memories as to their former past replacing it with the new version of it.
Yet another another theory is when you change the past it doesnt affect your present at all but creates an alternate timeline altogether that exists with your original timeline where the past wasn't altered at all.

I love temportal debates and the discussion of paradox

*grins*

AS to changeing the past, if one changes the past then the future is altered and thus facilitates you not going back to change the past thus a paradox, with the exception of one of two theroies.

1. Sending yourself a message to make sure the time travel and correciton take palce
2. Alternate timeline theroy.

atleast thats how I see it. I am open to debate

Protection? What for? All those little "problems" will remain in the past. Seriously though, I don't think getting laid outside prostitutes will be very easy for anyone who goes back in time. There really was not much besides sheep guts for protection, and nothing for women at all until 1960.

Stop by the bookies and place bets on sporting events while you are back there. Buy gold while it was cheap. And stocks of companies that still exist today!

I'd assume messing with the past in such ways would result in Marty McFly-esque levels of consequences.

If you're going back more than 100 years, bring with you as much aluminum as you can. It was worth more than gold. THat's why when they built the Washington monument they capped it with a 100 ounce pyramid of the metal.

First off, Age of consent didn't quite exist back then.

Secondly, It was by choice, since I haven't been able to time travel yet.

No offense, but I'm pretty sure she STILL would've died a virgin if you appeared.  She was quite adamant about her sexual purity.

Just bring some gadget from the future and say you're an angel or something, then show her said gadget as proof of your magical abilities or whatever. Then the deal is sealed.

She may have been nuts, but she wasn't stupid. She may believe you to be an angel, but I doubt she would sleep with you. You might need to ask to marry her first, and then have the Cardinal of Notre Dame perform the ceremony before you bloody the sheets.

Why not go for Mae West, or Clara Bow, who allegedly did the USC football team, or, well, you aren't Jack Kennedy, but what about Marilyn Monroe?

Clara Bow was too easy (I personally have no interest in notorious sluts in history). Joan of Arc would be a challenge, and therefore a bigger victory.

I wonder what it would be like to go back to say ancient Rome, and bring a lot of text books, and old Japan, or China, and bring to then a bunch of how to make books, modern agriculture, some basic science, germ theory...BUt really, I guess I don't need to imagine, there are a whole slew of alternative history novels out there.

But...what would happen if you could time travel, but space moved? You do know that the earth rotates, and it goes around the sun, but do you know the sun is moving towards the constellation of Hercules at 12 miles per second? So do you have any idea how far away we are from the spot the earth occupied now to the time you wish to go? You probably want a space suit.
