Make up brand and store recommendation
« on: February 20, 2011, 09:26:13 pm »
Hey, guys, I need to buy some light grey-green face make up that will last a long time with good coverage.

In addition, since it seems to be difficult to find a make up brand with a good store tacked on with it, what store would you recommend? A lot of these theatrical make up stores I'm finding look super skeezy.

If it helps, I'm going to cosplay [ . . . ] from Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name

A body painter friend of mine swears by Kryalon Aquacolor, both for ease of use and results. Aquacolor page: http://www.kryolan.com/en/index.php?cid=109&mnu=32&id=87&pageid=1
If you go with body paint, make sure you have sealant! I think Kryalon sells an aerosol sealant, which is really convenient. If you're in Portland, Hollywood Lights is pretty reliable. I've never been there myself, but Yagi and Hashi have ordered from them a couple times and they're generally pretty helpful.

Eeee you're doing Zombie eeee
Maybe this time when we cosplay from the same fandom we'll actually get to see each other.

Apparently Ben Nye's products are good; I've seen them recommended on coscom before, though I can't testify for their quality myself.

Does anybody have any recommendations for make-up assisting males in looking like females, and where to get them?  (I'd prefer getting some at a store rather than online).

Ben Nye is wonderful. I use that brand for my stage makeup. It covers even and well, and stays on for hours, even while sweating under the stage lights XP

Hollywood lights is extremely helpful. The entire staff there is very knowledgeable about their makeup supply, and will even test out the colours on you to make sure you know exactly what youre getting and that your colours will blend in the way you want them to. This has happened everytime I've gone. We went to get makeup for my Jet cosplay to look tanner, and she tested probably 5 shades on me, she also found a proper shade for contouring and we ordered them no problem. Seriously, I cannot reccommend Hollywood Lights enough, we were just there a few days ago to pick up an order. Also, if they dont have the exact shade you want, they will order it for you and call you to let you know when its there. They even held ours for 4 months because we ordered a few colours in December and couldnt pick them up until just now.

They carry Ben Nye, Kryolan , and some lesser known brands. Kryolan's Aquacolor is good for blending, but Ive also used Kyrolan's Supracolor, which is an oil based makeup. It blends a lot better, but is rough on brushes and on your skin. But it lasts a long time and I use it for a lot of shading. For example, I use a white Aquacolor base, but once it dries I go in and detail with the Supracolor. I dont think Supracolor as a base works, but Aquacolor with Supracolor on top certainly does.

Hollywood Lights also carries many different kinds of sealant, and various sizes, and you can order a larger size if you need it. They basically sell anything you could need in terms of makeup, even super random metallic shades to a book of proper emotional eyebrow stencils haha

Sorry for the super long post but I hope it helps!

@Sandro: Yup, its the one on McLoughlin. Thats the only one I know of anyways..

@Lychee: Haha, its no problem! Hollywood Lights has been my savior countless times and if it were closer to me I can almost guarantee you I would be there practically everyday XD; I'm happy to rant about it.

Edit: Here's the website with the address and directions
http://www.hollywoodlighting.biz/about/directions.html

They mainly do professional lighting services, so the outside looks like a warehouse type thing. But when you go in the front entrance, to the left , next to the register/desk area is a corner dedicated to makeup and the big display case.

^ Awesome!  Thanks, Hashi (even though you didn't acknowledge me... ;D).  It looks like I'd need to take the 33...
