Right now http://yokosonews.com/live/ is live translating Japanese news broadcasts.  Don't know for how long they will keep doing the stream.  They just reported another aftershock.

Also, tsunami warnings for Oregon Coast, possibly hitting at 7AM to 8AM.

こんそめ is so brave. She's the only one that hasn't banged the console open and she's not afraid of the quakes. Skype woke me up half an hour ago only to read how everyone is scared.

One of them says they felt an 8.5.

I was waiting for someone to make a thread about this.

Just got home tonight and caught this on the news.

I'm setting my alarm for 6:30 AM to catch the news again for updates on the tsunami.

Coastline has a Watch. Hawaii has a Warning. Let's hope that doesn't change.

Man, I've been watching it on the news for the past hour or so. It's so incredibly awful. All I can do is pray and hope that the death toll isn't extreme...Reading about all these disasters is really discouraging. I recently just heard that my host family is alright though, so thank god for that! D:

Worse case scenario I'd strap on swim trunks under my clothes, take my foam shield to use as a raft and make for the top of the tallest hill in my town with a tent and emergency supplies on my back.
Then I'd see what I could do to help anyone else out.

But it's got the mountain range to get through first.

You hear that Cascades?! hold the line!!

Ahahahaha, I need to hang around people like you more. <3

I don't have a disaster plan. I live in the ONE little block of town that wasn't obliterated by the previous floods(but it was impossible to get anywhere because of it). If this place floods again, I'm going back to Death Valley. I know my house isn't likely to flood but people are dumb enough to ignore the fact that their strategies failed for Katrina. We don't need another one and the last place that should expect it is the West Coast. I would rather deal with dust devils, firenados and easy big money trucks in the desert than get spammed with so much critical low paying work and then a year of unemployment when people were merely dumb enough to drive through water and are too poor to save their businesses.

From what Japanese tell me, they're in the same boat as I am. This is bad. Very bad. :/

If you want up to the minute coverage I suggest watching Aljazeera's english feed here http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/
It's the fastest international news I know of, and as for the Tsunami watch for the coast, last I heard it wont reach us, Hawaii will see some waves but nothing disaster worthy. Also there's only been 8 reported deaths so far, so hopefully most people had it out okay. Not sure on injuires though.

It might downgrade again, so if you live at the coast I'd be prepared but not panicked at this time.
Here's the link to check http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/  and also this site needs a major redesign, it's just ugly to look at.

My mom heard something it'll reach us. Her friend in Astoria, OR was woken up by a NOAA report and called her, so now my mom's on my way to see me here at college since I'm farther inland by a lot then her.
Yay no sleep for me tonight.. Glad I'm mostly done with my finals... But my dorm room is not puffy proof >>;

I'm not sure whether to get a little sleep or get a nocturnal drink like coffee or something.

7:20 AM I heard KATU say was a projected approach time. Somewhere between 1 and 5 ft.

I'm wondering about the effects on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers.

This is insane... I had plans to go to Lincoln City tomorrow as well.
Going to get up early and watch the news. I just can't wrap my head around alarms going off at the beach I always go to and people leaving hotels and camping spots... weird. At least it's the off season and there's not a lot of tourism around this time of year.

Hope the death toll in Japan doesn't climb really high. :/

Btw, has any news station said what caused the earthquake yet?

Same thing that causes all earthquakes, tectonic plates shifting.

And as of now the NHK is reporting 26 dead with a lot of missing persons as well.

I mean, was there specific plates? Like along any major Tectonic Plates?
We were just talking in one of my classes about how one of the major tectonic plates near us is overdue for a large shifting.

Yeah, I'm gonna sleep and get back up as well.

Surf's up...far too high to want to hang ten from.

I'm no surfer, but I'd rather take on figuratively "killer" waves than face this wall of Pacific linebackers.

Looks like something should be coming to the Oregon coast within an hour or two. We'll see.

Regardless of the local consequences, I am surely praying over Japan right now. I'm not normally one for posting prayers, but I feel the circumstances justify it.

May God move over the devastation, and save and comfort those in need, all to the furthering of His kingdom and glory. May His comfort be known and felt by those stricken, may the Spirit of God - who desires that none should die - move and save those caught in the midst of this tribulation.

I have a friend who's on exchange in Japan for now,Hidamari on the forums. This morning we heard news that she's safe and that her town wasn't very affected by the earthquake and that she's safe from the tsunami.

However I have two Japanese girls I hosted for a weekend earlier in the year and they live right outside Tokyo. I've emailed one of them, I'm really really hoping their okay. I'm so scared for them.

"Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture, or state, closest to the epicenter. Another 137 were confirmed killed, with 531 people missing. Police also said 627 people were injured.

The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed for hours by more than 50 aftershocks, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0."

My mom went on a wild ride last night x.x She met up with a nearby friend, then they drove to Southbend, then decided to head back and saw all these cars leaving, so they headed back to Southbend and slept in the McDonald's parking lot til they opened. Then went in to eat breakfast- and a lot of people we knew were there too. They haven't given the all clear to go back onto the peninsula yet, but some are heading back. Work, school... everything's closed. They apparently evacuated the whole area, and there's a high surf warning for our little area. Oregon's supposed to get it worse than Washington, but where we live it's pretty much Oregon.

Wait wat? o_o

Sendai? Great, I can expect half my friends in Fukushima to either not come back or have a communication blackout for the better half of a week. Thanks for that Internet. It's bad enough that 10+ of my Skype friends kill themselves every year without any valid reason or warning but now I'm infected with the knowledge that this tsunami could serve as that valid reason that more than half of them look for every morning. Japanese are crazy enough. They don't need more of it.

*poke* People on 2ch are saying this is like WWII. I think it's worse. Japan can't manage to be normal even when it comes to disasters like this one. There are homes in your watery wave of death that are ON FIRE!

Well that's just great. o_O

I'm fairly certain that being spammed with massive elemental death is a pretty awful way to go. Think about it: Moved by unstable Earth, swept away by violent waters, being mangled and burned by debris once meant to protect you and if that doesn't finish you, drowning in a vicious torrent full of roasting garbage. Or if you're my kind of lucky(just because that's how I roll), being electricuted by the power lines that fall nearby when all the garbage and your crippled body finally hit mainland. I don't even want to think about what kind of disease is incubating in that swift moving trash. Oh and the aftershocks are supposed to be 6.0+ for the next hours?

It's bad enough our president sounds like an indecisive tool with headlines like Japan earthquake potentially catastrophic, now I'm going to be hearing this on the news for the next two weeks and how they're going to deal with our national joke called FEMA.

.....

I'm going back to bed. I really don't need to be up on a day like this.
Some people around where I live are being swept into the ocean/ river.
Gnarly. I think if you live anywhere within three miles of the coast it should be mandatory to own a life jacket. If you're anywhere near the ocean and in an area known for disasters like this, you will eventually deal with this kind of OMGWTFBBQ and it will not be pretty.
Oregon's supposed to get it worse than Washington, but where we live it's pretty much Oregon.
This is exactly why I live in Washington. I often think about moving to Portland but then things like this pop up and I start to decide that I'm better off with the crowd of crazies in Olympia.

Just wanted to let any of you who know her, Hidamari (forum name) is ok. She is in Niigata which is central eastern Japan, so she hasn't gotten any tsunami, and the earthquake was smaller there.

Also, I heard that my other friends there are ok, and my Teachers' families are all ok too.

I'm still really worried about them though, I heard there was still more coming.

Also, I heard that my other friends there are ok, and my Teachers' families are all ok too.

I'm still really worried about them though, I heard there was still more coming.

Yay!!

I know we all know people over there, people we have met on trips, conventions, study buddies ect that we are worried about.

A friend of mine in Hawaii is okay, she said the warning sirens have not stopped and are driving her nuts, but she is safe.

powers that be please keep our friends safe, watch over those gone and their families.
This is the kinda thing that really scares me, how fast it hits you just never know.

I actually don't know anyone over there. Wish I did (but then again, maybe the tension of that kind of uncertainty and worry would be too much). All the same, I'm still keeping everyone in my prayers, though it would be nice to have a personal "investment" - someone to worry over (that's weird, isn't it?).

Spinning off into an extemporaneous tangent for a moment...there are few things I have tried harder than making friends and connections within the Japanese community. Japanese culture and community has always been such a massive passion of mine, I would love to share that with those who have grown in it, exchange experiences and all that a friendship really entails, but I've just never been able to make any lasting connections. Alas...

*cough* Ahem...sorry, back on topic now.

I heard the body count reached 600 by 10am (OR time) on CNN news.

Havent gotten a hole of my friends in Sedai yet, Im hopeing I'll get a call soon from them. Friends in tokyo say theyre fine, but cant find their parents yet, who were on a trip somewhere when it hit.

Astoria and Sea side i heard had it the worst of all the oregon coast cities, and thankfully my friend in Astoria left yesterday for tualatin. I just hope everyone is okay here in the US. Saying i hope everyone is ok in Japan is just a tad naive I think. Of corse they arent fine. They need are help. I wish I could go help them.

I'm trying really hard not to think about what the results of the dam breaking in Fukushima prefecture may have been.  :'(

If anyone wants to donate a little money here's a site you can do it at: http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/japan-earthquake-tsunami-relief/?RF=facebook_416387&ref=nf

I also know the red cross is doing a texting thing if anyone has the link to that.

I was watching the news with my mom when they reported it. The footage of the Tsunami was awful, there were houses literally just being pushed along by it and you could see cars driving away from the water when they zoomed in. :(

It's already hit close to home. Not physically, but painful enough. One of my best buds lost his niece.
