Well, my ISP pulled a switcheroo on me and changed their servers.

This year we have noticably fewer submissions than last so far.

Hello!

This time, I'm going to enroll! It will be my 1st time in an international contest. Thank you for your amazing rules which fit perfectly with my profile and newest AMV.

I've read the information in the URL but I still got three questions (I'm sorry if they seem silly!):

- Is there a problem if there are credits on the AMV?
- The AMV's have to be made in 2011? Older ones are also suitable?
- is there a problem if the AMV is already on the Internet or has been in another contest?

For your questions:

1. Credits and bumpers are fine as long as they within all the other limits, so:
- Not so long that the total project time is over 4 minute 40 seconds,
- Not hentai (must be PG-13)
- If they contain animation which isn't anime, or live action video, then the credit time counts as part of the 10% limit for non-anime content
- Credits can even mention other contests - we don't care. It lets the audience know about other options to send AMVs, so I think it's a chance to help out other conventions and competitions.

2. We have no limits about how long ago an AMV was made, and
3. It does not matter where ever else the AMV was shown, what other contests and prizes it has won elsewhere, or if it's been available for download elsewhere.
The only AMVs that cannot compete are ones which have actually been on-screen in previous contests here at Kumoricon.
(That, and people who are on the judges panel cannot submit their own AMVs.)

We once had one AMV of an unusual style, which turned out to be not selected that year. Then the next year we had a NEW category and that AMV fit wery will. So the editor sent us the SAME AMV - it had not been in the previous year's contest - as a contender for the new category, and the judges picked it for that year.

Web "bugs," TV station / cable station "bugs" - little identifiers usually placed in the corner(s) of the screen - must be cropped out or eliminated.

A common and easy way to do this is to create a second layer of your AMV above you video, trace a mask contour around the mark, and then apply a heavy blur (directional or radial or gaussian) on that. Then leave that blurry patch floating over the logo, and it destroys it quite nicely, while keeping up with the changing color background.

In contrast, if YOU make YOUR OWN mark and add it into the video to make it "yours" (such as to discourage other, less creative people from ripping your video to remix into their projects) then that is OK. Your logo is part of your artwork and creativity, and that is welcome.

Yes - always!

As soon as any AMV is downloaded, I play-test each of them on the system we will be using at the convention, or on one of the backup systems. Every entrant gets a private e-mail with "CONFIRM AMV:" in the subject line.

Then I tell you that the AMV played OK, or I tell you if there are playback problems, and what those are.
(Such as "Clickety glitch noise at 2min 12sec," or "sound drops out at 1min 27sec.")

I also advise if any technical problems would not pass the rules, such as "Fansub subtitles left in at 0min 33sec."
This lets you tell me whether you meant to do that or if it is a technical error.

I do not decide which AMVs get selected - that is all done by the judges' panel.

Well, last year the prizes were a swag bag from the Con and an anime DVD. And I imagine that the same person can win on more than one category, because the contest is based on audience voting.

Just out of curiosity: What are the prizes about?

The same person can win on two categories?

Typically the prize is an anime DVD and a convention bag of handouts and promotional materials, just like the people who come to the convention will get.
Once in a while I can have a mix of some an anime figurines as prizes and some DVDs. I try to match the DVDs or figurines to what the winners might like, if I can make a good guess!

Now, not only can a person recieve more than one prize, but also a single AMV can win one, two or more prizes. Typically the Best of Show winner is also the winner in its category, so it will get a double prize.

When a person wins two or more prizes, he or she will get a DVD (or figurine) for EACH winning entry. When an AMV wins two or more prizes it can get two DVDs or it can get a two-DVD series, or a thin-pack set, or some other "multiplied" prize, maybe a DVD plus a figurine from that show.

I like giving DVDs away the best because it is fuel for next years AMVs, right??

Have a question: I just now realized it, but one of my amvs is for the japanese videogame Rule of Rose. Problem: I used a clip of the English cutscene at the beginning and end. I am American: I do not own a Japanese playstation, nor a Japanese language copy of Rule of Rose to rip that from. Will my video be disqualified for having very short (like a second or two) clips in English at the beginning and end?

I'm obviously not anyone official but as I read the rules they forbid English *dubs*. If the audio is originally in English (and I double-checked, Rule of Rose apparently is only in English) I can't imagine the judges could fault you for it. Definitely make sure to ask Guy make a note of that for the judges though, they certainly don't necessarily know you aren't using a dub!

I'm obviously not anyone official but as I read the rules they forbid English *dubs*. If the audio is originally in English (and I double-checked, Rule of Rose apparently is only in English) I can't imagine the judges could fault you for it. Definitely make sure to ask Guy make a note of that for the judges though, they certainly don't necessarily know you aren't using a dub!

I will be doing all the index cards (each entry gets a card and the judges populate the categories by re-arranging the cards into sets) tonight through Friday night and each card - such as your entry - will have special notes like the ones you mention. Several entries have distorted video and they will have notes that these are intentional effects, not an "I'm a klutz with WMM" pixellated crud-fest. Same goes for intentionally selected subtitles.

For your entry, this is like when Vampire Hunder D first came out it was ONLY available with an English dub.

The judges can bend the rules if the overall project is ENTERTAINING.
The no-dub rule has popped up recently in several other contests because people who watch subs and raws find English rather jarring. However, like the 'Intentionally Selected Fansub subtitles,' a well chosen spoken phrase which adds to the work should be generally acceptable.

In any cases it is the judges' collective decision.

I start a new forum thread under Fan Creations > AMV, and in between cooking and serving (and working on the contest OP, etc) I send updates - about hourly if I can - with the latest developments, quips by the judges, etc.
I usually start with a summary of total # of entries, anime series used, and where they all came from.

Feedback makes it more FUN, so please don't just LURK.
