The signature food of Portland, OR?
« on: August 06, 2011, 09:29:09 pm »
You know, in addition to loving anime, and other things, I am somewhat of a foodie.

Seattle has their coffee, Los Angeles their french dip sandwich (and bacon-wrapped hot dogs), Boston its baked beans and Philly its cheesesteak sandwiches.

But what about Portland? Folks, what do you think is the signature food item of northwestern Oregon? Have at it, fellas.

Agreed.

That's what I thought of too, although salmon and coffee can easily be ours as well.

This, as well as tofu, from what I understand... OH!  SUSHI!!!  Portland has a good-sized sushi field, doesn't it?

Donuts.

If not, I'd say coffee. Because hipsters love coffee, and this is Portland.

We have so many amazing things I don't think you can narrow it down to one or two things like other city's.

But if I had to pick one that pretty much everyone knows about I'd say voodoo.

But it's well known and amazing. Usually those two don't go hand in hand..

Beer, Voodoo, and coffee. And foodcarts, even though they're not a singular food item. Portland was recently named as having the best foodcarts in the world. Not the US- the WORLD. So that's pretty cool.

Ya know?  I've only been to one food cart in Portland, and I wasn't too impressed with it...

That's like saying you've only been to one Pizzeria in New York, and it wasn't that great.

Food carts are like any restaurant and can be hit and miss, tho harder to be held accountable the way a restaurant can be.

Sadly means it on my list of things to avoid while pregnant, along with any thing that might be iffy.

Did I mention how much I <3 a nice cold ham sammich in the summer on really fresh bread little mayo lettuce ad tillamook cheese , few chips on the side, and a cold coke.

Never thought I would have to give up deli meat because pregnant

It's outside of the city itself, but:
CAMP 18

Frisbee-sized Danishes, CHECK:

MONGO-sized Burgers, CHECK:

Off the menu, they had a 6-egg + dozend fried oyster BREAKFAST SPECIAL,
and they had a DOUBLE-RACK of beef ribs as a dinner special; came with a small bucket for the rib bones.

MENU. 'nuf said.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Other than that the other 'signature Oregon' thing I think of isn't a food, but rather the local Pinot Noirs, which tend to be structured with a NASTY COPPERY AFTERTASTE cuz-it's such a WET-ASS GRAPE the way it's usually grown here.
Might be more of a local thing, but besides Thailand, Portland seems to be a pretty choice place to get good Thai food.  I've honestly never eaten Thai food anywhere else but I've certainly had some incredible Thai Food in Portland and Beaverton, and I have a lot of friends who are also pretty fond of the local Thai Food scene.
Portland is the capital of artisan junk food. voodoo donuts, stump town coffee, kettle chips, brunchbox ( food cart), killer burger ect. our signiture foods are unique, fun and a little crazy; just like the portland spirit. :D
What does man value more than life, yet fear more than death and mortal strife? What the poor have the rich require, and what contented men desire. What the mizer spends and the spendthrift saves, and all men carry to there graves.
