No hentai this year?
« on: August 27, 2011, 08:38:49 am »
I've been looking over the schedule for 2011 and it seems like there is no hentai panel or even a yuri panel (for viewings mainly: I don't want to spend 30 minutes watching someone draw)*.  These were the highlight of the convention for me over the past 3 years, and it would stink if these things were perma-banned like at Sakura-con :'(.  Does anyone know if the viewing rooms will have some hentai this year or if anyone even applied to host a hentai panel?

*Before you get all high and mighty on me, I don't object to your Yaoi stuff all over the place, so there should be some tolerance for late night hentai for adults.

Indeed it essentially is.  On this page, http://sakuracon.org/programming/ratings.php, they state:

Quote
Sakura-Con will not have hentai/yaoi/yuri at the convention except in discussion or reference.

Very disappointing, but they have been that way for some time.  Probably a condition of getting the Mayor and Governor to endorse the event  :)

I'm not sure about Hentai, but wouldn't they probably be showing Yuri in the viewing rooms? I believe they give us an extra little insert with the schedule of what they're showing and when, and if that's the case, they'll probably showing Yuri in the evening. That's just my guess. I THINK that's what they did last year.

THIS MAKES ME SAD!!!

Hentai was one of the funnest 18+ up events cause everyone in there would make silly and funny remarks on what was going on, on screen, it was HILARIOUS!!! It's not like the people in there were sitting there enjoying it way more than they should be in public if you know what I mean!!! I was really hoping to actually GET IN this year as the last two were full and I couldn't as I went to go late instead of getting in line at the beginning. I'm 21 and haven't been to hentai SINCE my first 18+ up con in 2008 when I was a fresh 18 year old.... so long ago *sniff* I want fun hentai time! :'(

Assuming that this is correct, there's another reason why I don't like Christine Gregoire.

I would figure this was not a literal condition of their endorsement, but rather, desiring the continued endorsements is one among many considerations that Sakura-Con keeps in mind when deciding on their content.

Personally I could understand why there is no Hentai.  I know it is part of the Anime art form but still it is an adult medium.  That is why they show it at adult conventions.  Though I would not mind going to one of these panels to see what it's all about.

my first con was kumo back in 09 I was so excited that I got my hand stamped for the hentai since I just turned 18 two months before, I got there and it was full. but not having just means that you probably can try to plan for it next year and ask for a view room :P

That is also why the show it after hours when minors have to be in their rooms and your ID is checked as well as your hand is checked for a stamp to make sure you're 18+

Hentai, yaoi and yuri are not banned from Kumoricon.  It was a combination of no room in the schedule and no one submitting a panel form.  In the past, I have wrangled people to run this when I had open time in the schedule, but we have such a full schedule this year I didn't push for it.

There is always next year :)

Why would they even need to care what they say to begin with?  Kumoricon doesn't seek the approval of Oregon's Governor nor Portland's Mayor.  Unless they're trying to abolish the con, I don't see why their opinions matter.

Personally I could understand why there is no Hentai.  I know it is part of the Anime art form but still it is an adult medium.  That is why they show it at adult conventions.  Though I would not mind going to one of these panels to see what it's all about.

What adult cons?  One of the few things I've done at Sakuracon in the past was look for hentai to purchase.  I'm in my 20's and can legally buy this stuff.  Cons provide a wide variety of hentai content that you can't find in any stores, not even porn stores.

I'm not saying they do not take steps to make sure minors can not view hentai.  The main thing to me is does Hentai really fit with Anime?  I love Anime and have watched hentai before.  But I separate the two totally.  That is my just opinion of the two.  Like I said before if there was a hentai portion I'd probably check it out.

^ Yes, it does fit with anime, because it IS anime.  Anime=Japanese animation.  Hentai is just a category of anime, and it has it's rightful place at cons, just as much as Pokemon, Naruto, and Bleach.

Thank you to whoever put the wheels in motion for Hentai this year!!!  Once again, Kumoricon is the only con worth attending in the Northwest!!!

Yes, we do have the hentai, yaoi, and yuri panels back this year, but not as straight viewing panels (sorry to disappoint.)  There may be some shown, but the panels will be primarily a discussion of the genre, not a chance to kick back and watch videos.
