Overall a great and friendly con BUT
« on: September 06, 2005, 02:55:29 pm »
This was my first Kumoricon, and I have to say as a whole it's really great.  Nearly all the staff was friendly and helpful, and the overall environment is awesome.  However, the only real problems my fiancee and I experienced both involved the gaming room.  First off, the tournaments.  The overall organziation seemed to be lacking, along with them running long. I entered the Tekken 5 tournament, and while I sat there with the other players waiting and getting in fights for fun, we noticed the DDR tournament kept going, and going, and going.  After investigating, turns out that there wasn't a tournament going on anymore, but instead they were just playing to play, which was really unfair to the 15-20 of us that were sitting there waiting for well over an hour.

The next day was the Mario Kart DD tournament, where in the person running it really didn't seem to know what she was doing.  She continually changed the rules.  At first it was stated to be a team tournament, so my fiancee and I signed up as a team, as did several other people. Then she decided that she would just randomly assign teams, since several people signed up by themselves. The folks that signed up as teams got upset, so she relented and only assigned people that didn't have a team. Next, the rules stated it was to be random characters and random carts, so we went first against another team. We won, but with a not so hot score, but we figured it was random select, it can't be helped. Of course AFTER we go, she decides people can pick teams, just not a certain car and certain teams. The team we played quit right there, and we stuck it out for another round, but noticed our scores were far too low to continue after the mediocre first round.

Lastly, Sunday night we were looking for our roomates since we had forgotten our key.  My fiancee had left her badge in the room as well, so first we hit the dance, and after talking with the staff working, they let us go in and look for them. They weren't there, so we tried the game room, explaining what was going on.  One particular staffer there got huffy and said "Without a badge you can NOT go in" so she said "Fine whatever you go in and look" and left. The staffer then had the nerve to shout "no you STOP and come BACK HERE" to her, which made absolutely NO sense to me. If my fiancee is leaving because she can't go look, what right does a person have to yell at her to stop?

I hate to make it sound like we had nothing but problems, because we will gladly come next year and overall we had a blast.  This stuff is really just isolated events of suck amongst tons of awesome. Hanging out with the Bakazoku guys we got to talk to the head of this whole shebang, and he rocks, as well as being an awesome Legolas.

Both Myself and My friend Hawkeye were assigned to the gameroom doors for a good portion of the time but I dont recall that occuring.  Do you remember which person it was that shouted? We are trying to avoid things like this happening.

To clarify tho

We will stop those without a badge at the door BUT if you are looking for someone, one of the 2 stationed guards will escort the person inside to look.  I am sorry that this did not occur.

It was Sunday night, I'd say around nine ish or so, not too long after the Bakazoku panel let out.  I didn't catch her badge name.  I do remember some folks in FMA outfits around the door as well, probably you and said partner, and they were doing an excellent job.

I can understand stress, being a network admin my users push me to the breaking point all the time, but the fact this person shouted like she was her mother was just really odd and irritating.

Again though, save for these isolated things, Kumoricon is all kinds of awesome.

being that I was stationed at the game room for a good portion of the con, was this by chance the part where a cople (one male one female) wanted to enter the game room without badges to find someone and when advised by staff that they couldnt go in became upset, then one was allowed in with an escort but began useing foul language twoard the stationed guard? this was the only real problem I ran into.

I don't think so, because when I went I had my badge with me, and I don't think any obscenities came out of my mouth.  However if that was us and I did, which in all honesty was possible due to my extremely frustrated frame of mind, I apologize for that much.

more editage:

Upon thinking about it that probably was me, as sometimes I do swear without a second thought, so the staffer was probably yelling at me to stop and not her, so I guess I can nix that complaint and we'll go with a misunderstanding and overly stressed situations. The tourney stuff is still a disappointment though :( Again apologies for my needless words and anger.

Yeah, I have to agree that the tourneys could have been better. I don't want to criticize too harshly on that though, as being involved with the EtherGuild and running LAN parties all of the time (and XBox/PS2 gaming, etc, etc) I know how hard it can be to plan.

However, just as a friendly informative, the Halo 2 tourney imho should have been in all out matches, not team based play. Our club has had several Halo 2 tourneys, and we've found this to be the best way. We've even had sponsored players show up and tell us how much they enjoy our tournaments (and using us as fodder...).

Not everyone coming in is going to have a team (especially when the rules are not announced ahead of time). My little brother even signed up for the Halo 2 tourney, only to have to drop when they finally mentioned they were going to play teams just moments before the tourney finally started.

It's best to try and have all of the rules figured out (and posted if possible) before tournament registration starts. Nothing irritates players more than last minute changes, be it a casual player or professional.

Don't worry too much though, I know I sure didn't get it right the first time... :D

Whoa I had no idea it can make that much of a difference, but I'm not much of a Halo player. I used to run fighter tournies and I know what a hassle it is. The best thing one can do is come up with the rules beforehand, and stick with them. Take feedback at the end (like this handy dandy forum) and make any needed adjustments.

The Double Dash one was annoying, but I think the Tekken tournament being bumped for what seemed no real reason was pretty messed up. Also the fact that instead of taking a moment to announce it, we were all left sitting there.

It happens, the gaming room was a bit of a high stress point :)

Sounds good to me.  And indeed I did, I'd rate Kumori as one of the best cons I've been to.

Yep, the structure of your tourney can make a huge difference, especially depending on the type of players you have present. I mean, if all of your players are members of sponsored teams and such then team play is the way to go (and that's usually how it is at really large LANs like PDX Lan and the like), but if you have a lot of casual players just dropping in, team based play is going to leave a lot of them out.

I've had the experience of running several LANs over the past few years, and our last one had around 200 attendees and a dozen sponsors who provided approx $2000 in prizes. It's been a blast, but a lot of work. If anyone's interested in running a LAN in the future and wants any pointers on running tourneys, obtaining sponsors, or anything of the like, just let me know. :) Running these events has become a real passion for me, and as such I love talking about it. ;)

Good luck to Kumori for next year!
