A head's up about the local area
« on: June 24, 2013, 01:11:31 am »
For those of you who don't live in/near the downtown Vancouver area (or visit it), there are two popular con spots that have closed their doors.

One of them, which I think I may have mentioned somewhere before, is Pop Culture.  That place closed about a month or two ago, due to a lack of business (from what I understand).  If we have an official con Day 0 party, it will have to be somewhere else.

The other one is Asian Mini Mart.  This change is much more recent.  Rather than poor business, this place is closing its door on account of the owners moving to the southern California area, and nobody wanted to, or could, pick the business up upon their departure.

Thats too bad, sadly I can understand the pop shop, luxury soda not doing the best with people on a budget.
Tho I saw some of the flavors there at my local freddies cold soda area.

That's a shame about the mini mart, it was fun to visit and shop there.

What's weird about it a few months ago, one of the employees told Chan & I that the owners wanted to do some planning for the con.  We gave them the Relations and Facilities emails, and hoped for the best.  I wonder if they gave up due to a lack of communicating or they felt the want/need to go to Cali faster than originally planned...  (I'm willing to bet that it'd be the first one...).

Id also like to add some info about the area in general, if you aren't familiar with it.
Subway is the closest fast food restaurant there, but there is a muchus gracius (sp?) About three blocks up Washington or Columbian street. I suggest making a run to the dollar store before coming to the con space, and stocking up on cup of noodles and micro meals (bring your own microwave lol).
Also, look out for The Mighty Bowl. They are an amazing food truck with healthy and delicious food at great prices. I highly recommend them. They even take debit cards!

Another option is the Farmer's Market just a block away, that's open on Saturday and Sunday. I got all my food there both days, it was great.

Subway is the closest fast food restaurant there,

SIGH......
sorry had to get that out of my system, I love a nice ham sammich in the summer time, but when pregger you can't eat deli meat unless it has been heated to steaming for a min, and once steaming its not the same, and wilts lettuce.
The food trucks are nice tho for the same reason above I have to be choosy.

We are at red lion this year which while tiny bit farther is said to have a microwave and mini fridge so thats cool.
Here is a tip, about a month before con keep an eye on grocery deals, because things like capri sun, bottles soda, gummi snacks fruit roll ups, granola bars snack sized chips and such go through these cycles of sales and can get super cheap
This site posts deals and coupon match ups and senerios even links to print coupons.  Last couple of years I have really scored before con, and had tons of snacks for my group and to share.

I couldnt have said it better myself, jazz. I totally agree. Always keep an eye out for good deals on easy items like juice boxes and capri suns, that can be bought and stored for a while. Or get a big thing of bottled water from the dollar store, and mix in your favorite drink mix packs from Arizona ice tea like i do lol

Subway is my one stop for dinner and lunch. It was basically 75% of my diet last year (25% being the snacks my mom and I brought). I haven't gone to other places yet, like the farmer's market, so I'll check that out. My mom says it's really good, price wise and quality wise for food so I may go to it this year c:
Good News and Bad News.
Bad news is I can't go to Kumoricon the whole weekend because of costs and drivers ed.

GOOD NEWS is that if I can raise enough money I can go for Saturday all day as Espurr (Pokemon X/Y)
Hope to see you all then! <3

Thanks for the info on this! Since I'm from Seattle, I didn't know about the Vancouver Farmer's Market. I've now checked out their website and it looks like there are all sorts of options there.

Torqe coffee is across from the con and they are amazing. If your looking for bar's you may be suprised that I would recomend boomers. It's a small bar at the base of main street also known as gold rush. The crowed is much older and "Seasoned". Although they have free pool and the cheapest drinks in town. I went there last year and the second I walked in, everyone was shaking my hand and buying me drinks. If it's not aparent to you it should be know that when Kumoricon is going on, the locals take notice. They thought the con was cool and were glad someone walked into their bar to tell them what was going on.

Long story short, free drinks and/or cheap drinks.

Also main event is full of young and atractive people, they are close to the con and you could probably walk in by yourself there without feeling weird. Brick house is like one big high school reunion, attractive people go there as well although go with a bigger group because d-bags are frequently lurking. Fun atmosphere though.

Costco and Cash n' Carry are good places to get snacks, drinks, and ramen. (although, not if you don't like things in bulk) I did not find out about the plaid pantry until this year, so I will for sure be stopping there.

In downton Vancouver there is a nice ice cream/pie/cake place called Ice Cream Renaissance. The ice cream is homemade and delicious if you're looking for just a cold snack.

For actual food, there are a few Burgervilles a little ways away, but not downtown anymore. There's a sandwich place called City Sub, and then McMenamins by the water, though that's more expensive.  Rosemary's cafe is really good, and it has Jerusalem Cafe right next to it, which I remember as being good. They are both fair priced.

The closest Burgerville to the con is over by Clark College. The Burgerville that was on the food list last year was gone last year. Luckily Burgerville is one of the best places to go to get gluten free and last year they had a big event going on where you get 5 cheeseburgers for $5 if I remember the deal right.

Another place to check out is an Asian restaurant by Subway.  I can't think of the name right now, but their menu is Cambodian and Laotian.  ...Tiger's Garden?  ...maybe?  ...I should know this...

^ The lower part of that pic is where Chan & I like to eat whenever we're there.  We've had groups of nerds hanging out there, including a couple rounds of a LARP going on (Vampire: The Masquerade).

For those of you that are into bars, another good one is Malibu's.  There are two ladies that usually work the bar itself that are sweet as pie, and will treat you well.  I've only met one bouncer, but he was cool; I've heard good things about the other one, too.  The one bad note I have will most likely not happen while y'all are here, but there was this one time that the place treated one of the bands like crap.  It pissed one of the members off so much that the band started to tear down their equipment and leave.  What upset me was that the guy who's dating the owner was talking with one of his friends about jumping the band members and kicking their arses and maybe even killing them.  Not cool, especially since the band's bass player was my father.

Yeah it is. Last year the ice cream machine kinda... exploded all over one of the female employees (even sprayed up to the ceiling). I feel bad for laughing because it must have sucked for her, but it was quite a spectical to see. Last time I went there she was still working there, too.
