AMV Judges Panel 2013 - Live Blogging!
« on: August 01, 2013, 06:02:46 am »
OK, here we go again!
Things will kick off at 11AM Saturday, 3-Aug-13.

... must first clean and vacuum the 30x40 shop we use;
it gets cob-webby otherwise, and we often get a few bats
back there. I still have some .22cal bat-shot around to
take 'em out. More activity here as things warm up.

ALL Comments and visitors WELCOME!

Final tallies are IN!

Entry cards are all printed up.
I will sort them per category next.

The shop (out building) is clean.
I ran out of bat-shot and there is one damned flying rodent left.
I hope it does not bother the judges.

.22, .223 and 9mm, and .40cal have been hard to find at a good price ever since the US Gov't placed an order for 16 - 18 billion rounds.
For you US tax payers: if you voted for this president I hope you like paying for that ammo with your wages.

I hope to hear from some of you over the course of the day tomorrow;
otherwise it gets awful lonely (and boring) doing this.

I believe that the judges will be able to put together a very good, strong show for this year.

Let's see what happens!

ALL ENTRY CARDS READY
« Reply #3 on: August 03, 2013, 12:00:02 am »
Nearly midnight!

I used to use cards but now I print out entries
as a text document and cut up slips of paper for
the judges to use.

They can move slips around from pile to pile
(or the waste bin!) as they winnow the categories.

GOODNIGHT!!

OK the judges are here!
They've been going through the "No category submitted" entries, first.  (There are 8.)
Then they will move on to Intensity, where there are 35 entries.

So far ONE of the "No category' entries has been selected for Intensity.

One judge on Intensity feels that if an AMV hist hard and holds high intensity without relenting, then the audience can get bored with the same level.
Maybe it's better to hit hard, then back off a little to let the audience feel the hit, and then come back hard again - especially with a new plot twist.

"Hey - is that snow falling, or is that the guy's DANDRUFF!"

NEWS - they have created a temporary category #7 called HORROR.

Let's see if it becomes another opportunity for an EXTRA prize!

They have thinned down 'Instrumental' and 'Trailers'
down to 6 entries each.

They are now working 'Retro' and will go back to 'Intensity' later.
The first pass was to weed out the slower, plodding drama-style entries, which do not fit the Intensity definition.

'Mislead the Audience' has been cut down to 8 contenders, with one being moved to the new 'Horror' category.

Anybody out there?

Habemus Contest!

The judges have thinned things down to just under 100 minutes.

I will calculate more exact stats over the next couple of days.

I will also be PRIVATELY notifying the editors whose works were selected.
Then I will post the play list about 2weekls befor ethe con.

We are not QUITE done!

They are now discussing:
- An honorable mention: It did not make the category but they want to award a consolation prize.
- They are choosing "Master of Technical Effects." They have 4 entries in mind, 3 are in the contest playlist and the other may be that consolation prize, and
- Judges' Choice.

More updates later into the evening!

Good Morning! I will have a report for the Kumoricon staff meeting later today.

After general cleanup ( the judges went for TEN HOURS yesterday) I will be copying the contest onto TWO backup locations.
During that copying I will be corelatting the selected entries with their creators, (The judges don't know who created what, unless someone puts a screen name or etc. into the work itself) and then I will be contacting AMV editors PRIVATELY.

Around August 17th I will publicly post the playlist ahead of the contest.

The judges have selsected THREE prize winners, which will be announced at the convention:

- Judge's Choice
- Honorable Mention
- Master of Technical Effects

More stats coming in:

    Duration: 14min 39sec

2. Horror (New Category!)
    4 entries selected
    Duration: 8min 15sec

3. Retro
    16 entries / 5 selected
    Duration: 17min 11sec

4. Mislead the Audience
    12 entries / 4 selected
    Duration: 13min 27sec

5. Comedy
    12 entries / 6 selected

6. Intensity
    35 entries / 5 selected
    Duration: 16 min 39 sec

7. Trailers
    13 entries / 5 selected
    Duration: 9min 04sec

8 other AMVs were entered without a category,
and of those 2 were selected for the playlist.

Total Contest duration: 92min 34sec !
(excluding category intros and contest intro)

Some AMVs submitted in one category will be competing in alternate categories where the judges felt they would work best for the audience.
I am also compiling the roster of entries which have been selected for the contest.
As I wrote earlier, I will be contacting editors privately over the next few days to tell them the good news!

Local Heroes:

Of the 30 AMVs selected to run in the contest,
THREE (3) were made by editors in the Portland / Vancouver area!

It's always nice when someone who shows up at the con gets to
see his or her work get up there on the big screen!

What are the day and times of this year's contest and show? (I'd like to schedule my games library shifts around it so I may attend).

AMV Contest: I think it's 5pm to 8pm this time.
The overnighter will be the following night.

Memorable judges' quotes:

(to a wub-wub-dub-step AMV)  "This sounds like Transformers eating Lunch!!"

Also, even though this contest DOES NOT have a Drama/Romance/Sentimental we still get a lot of those, probably because they are very satisfying to MAKE. But historically, when we used to run a drama category, the audience interprets it as 'Intermission/Bathroom or Snack Break Category' and half of them leave. So a few years ago we got rid of the category.

Drama AMVs tend to be LONGER than any other style, the slow, plodding music starts up, the whiny emo lyrics, then come long cuts of Face A looking longingly, wistfully etc at Face B....

- and the judges look down to the timeline progress bar and go "OMG we have FOUR MORE MINUTES of THIS??!?" Now, to be fair some AMVs actually start slow and then kick into high gear as a surprise - which can be intense - but if they slide the playback to the 3rd minute and we're still dealing with a plodding, relationship-based story - it's NOT an 'Intensity' AMV.

The other way they test for a good story progression in a 4-minute or longer work is to check Minute 1 versus Minute 3. Are we learnign more, seeing more, adding more to the story? or is this a one-trick pony that always goes back to the same topic whenever the refrain comes around? They do this again at Minute 4 versus Minute 2.  In this way they once passed a SIX and a HALF MINUTE AMV - way over the limit BUT this AMV showed fighting pairs in which whoever you paired with you got DIFFERENT and EXCITING powers. As the editor went through the combinations, each one was NEW, and INTERESTING. One judge at the 4-minute mark said "Wow, I only feel like I am TWO minutes in..."

Compare this to a typical Drama vid where you FEEL like it's drawn on for three minutes already and you're just past the first minute...

VideoLAN (the VLC player) has a neat speed-change feature; it's "]" to speed up and "[" to slow down. It does this without pitch bending (like if you slowed down a physical medium like a phonograph record or magnetic audio tape...)

A lot of the 'Intensity' AMVs which were not selected actually still worked when played at 1.5x to 2x speed.

For Drama AMVs that get sent in as Intensity, it might be neat if editors tried that trick - Remaster it at 1.5x to 2x speed.
By the way this can make Classic Rock sound almost like Techno (which may be a fun Retro trick too: a 30 year old 'oldie'** can sound only 15 years old...)

** I hate how the term 'oldies' music is stuck to a particular era. To me, as the later music gets just as old as the 'oldies' were in the 1980s, we should get to call those songs 'oldies' too. I want to call Alanis Morissette, Jewel Kilcher, The Cars, Sting, and Insane Clown Posse as 'oldies' someday soon. Brittney Spears and Pearl Jam, you're NEXT. Oldies!!

OK we're done here; I'll have an admin close off this thread.

This year I was actually very busy on the grille/smoker,** and didn't have as much time as previously to listen for fun comments or observe closeley what was happening and when.

Be sure to watch this other thread for the playlist and winners' announcements:
https://www.kumoricon.org/forums/index.php?topic=18099.0

** A couple of the returning judges had remembered that I have a bad-ass BBQ/smoker, and they brought quite a variety of meats to spare, which had me smoking and tending it most of the day... I had soaked blocks of hickory overnight, and we roasted the steam out of these over the hours, turning them into charcoal chunks themselves, which then got used as fuel to smoke and stream out the next batch of water-logged chunks.
Tied me down for most of the daylight hours but when we were done we have pink through-and-through smoked pork tenderloins (whole!) tri-tip steak, chicken breast and even VENISON! Yum! But I didn't get to write as much...
