An acquaintance of mine told me than
CMVs (
cosplay music videos) are very popular.
I hadn't heard of these, and so I started searching around on YouTube.
My friend had described stuff like people getting filmed dressed up as Mario, then jumping around the city part or other fun places, then going back and digitally adding in Hanging coins, collecting prizes, jumping into (and emerging from) silly pipes, etc - all set to the classic MIDI music.
OK, so that sounded interesting and pretty fun.
But the CMVs I could find on YouTube were really LAME...
not really funny or entertaining (to me) at all.
So, am I looking in the wrong place, or am I just missing out on something that substantial groups of people are really into?
E.g: I'm not really into Hetalia, Akira, Naruto, or Pokemon, but I am interested in doing things that entertain fans of these shows because it
makes Kumoricon more fun as a whole. But it's just harder for me to be sensitive to what will light up a crowd vs what won't if it's all 'meh' to me...
Do people want a category of fan-made videos like these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxwaG7Eq0CEhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsvE8fhF3ekhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy2YiL3I4q4Will 800 fans gather in Main Events to watch these for 30 - 60 minutes?
IF SO, we can do this, BUT (as I do with AMVs) I am going to need to convene a judges panel of fans who
- make or know about making these kinds of videos with a passion
- 'get' the memes / in-jokes, etc
- can accurately (as a group) select works that the Kumoricon fanbase will enjoy AND weed-out the ones that they will find
lame.
Now, I would love it either way, as long as we get a GANG of people HAVING FUN, and especially powered by their OWN creative tools.
This helps support what I think is a crucial component of Kumoricon that makes us different from the cons where industry pro's have taken over -
our by fans & for fans element.
Let the industries create the base characters and settings - and WE TAKE IT FROM THERE - "Get outta the way," each fan says, "now it's MY TURN!!"
Kumoricon fans use anime as our INGREDIENTS, and then we make OUR OWN FUN.
Costumes. Skits. Fanart. AMVs. Fanfic. You name it.
So - do we want to try this as an additional category to the AMV event, or a stand alone event?
