We get pissy because the thread is dead. We consider a thread active for a few months after the last post. Popular threads, like this and the "post a picture of yourself" version in the spam forum always come back about once a year.
We don't like it when people make copies of threads that are still alive, we don't mind so much when it has been a long time.
I'm sure you'll get the flow of our forum soon.
As for getting to know people, I maintain my own staff page to help with that.
