I can't find any rules as to what I can or can't bring to the con. I know I'm a noob...but I've never been to one before. I have a samurai sword I want to bring as part of my Anbu costume. I was wondering if it's allowed.

Some of the general rules are that you cannot have live steel, meaning a sharpened blade, at the convention. If it is an unsharpened metal blade, it must be sheathed at all times, and peacebound, which is both an act of prevention of removing the blade from it's sheath, and a contract with our Yojimbo that you will not use your prop to harm anyone else, whether intentional or unintentional.

I have been in touch with Staze on whether or not to allow live steel, and he has decided to leave this matter up to Brownie, our spastic yojimbo leader. So I need to keep her aware of this, and hopefully we will have a definitive answer shortly.

far from it. The hotel last year had that attitude and it really upset alot of people.

Live steel from what I understand will be allowed tho it will be age restricted. It will also be dealt with on a case by case basis. Most people are here to enjoy the con but it only takes one unruly individual to ruin everyones fun.

Live steel shouldn't be allowed, period. There are too many risk factors, and that would actually increase our liability with the hotel and the insurance.

I think you might mean "looks cool" rather than "is fun" unless you genuinely consider the use of it, i.e. stabbing or getting stabbed, to be fun. :?

Balancing the need of the few to look cool versus the need of the many who don't want to be stabbed, accidentally or otherwise... dadgum, that's a tough choice. Or not.

IMHO, if this were an 18+ convention it would be fine to bring live steel. But as it is, I'd personally rather not have 13-year-olds running around looking cool with Dad's sai.

I'd have to agree with the monkey of evil here. No matter how responsible one person could be with a live blade, there's going to be some schmuck that'll go "Oh cool can I see that OH GOD I JUST CUT MY FINGER OFF I'M SUING EVERYBODY!"

I love my conventions and the people that attend them, but come on, how often do you see a con goer zooming through the hotel you wouldn't even trust with a foam ball, let alone a deadly weapon?

Live steal is not sold at the convention. Live steel is classified as a sharpened blade. The blades sold at the convention are not sharpened.

"Live steel" is an idiom, not a literal phrase. If you take this word game all the way, the only "live steel" would be sentient mechas.

For all intents here it's "steel" if it's a bad idea to stick it in a light socket while sitting in the bath. If it's also more likely to cut than to bruise, then it's "live steel." Even if it's made of copper, aluminum, uranium, and 14K gold.

You know, honestly, even a katana that doesn't hold a live blade can still be a dangerous weapon. I mean, the thing still has a very sharp pointed tip at the end that would easily slide into someone's belly with the proper application of force *evil thoughs mirrored by the evil grin* Ummm... anyway... for the most part, I think the rules as they stand are suitable and fair. I remember a certain someone having a six foot Masamune that followed all guidelines and there was no problem.
Anime_fan, if you really need a katana for your cosplay, I have one that would follow the rules I could lend you with collateral. Not sure it would fit, cause I'm unsure who your character is, but if you'd like I'll send you pics

cheap Katanas can be had for under $40 I keep getting some $10 ninja swords at a sword shop here in town. They can be easly rebated (the edge removed) so they are no sharper than a butter knife, rebated weapons are what some peaple I know who do stage fighting use and a friend who is in a live steel group that broke away from the SCA. Any bladed things I make for the con will be as sharp as the back side of a wooden ruller.

Kylite is correct. Our con chair informed myself and Brownie at the last meeting that live steel has been banned to liability concerns by our insurance carrier. Stage steel is still acceptable as long as it's peace tied. Yojimbo will check out all weapons to make sure they don't have a sharp edge and if they do we will politely request that you leave it in your hotel room.

Why? Because blood is hard to remove from the hotel carpet.

Last year, I went as Alice from American McGees Alice, (think Alice in Wonderland...cept...like...butchers knife+yummy blood) and I had to work my ass off to make a FAKE knife with paper maché, popsickle sticks and aluminum foil.

Not hard at all, you just need to wash gently in cold water with no soap, then again gently in warm with a protien based soap. I have been covered head to toe in blood many times and always got it out except once a polyester t shirt. Now bits of brain are another story

They are making a alice movie in eastern europe now with the buffy girl (bad choice they should have went with band camp girl)

why need to make a knife at halloween they sell big plastic butcher knives
