Have you seen gravion yet? It's not really 'new' new but it's really good. I'd also highly recommend Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu! The comedy was in the same style as some of the anime you've mentioned.

If you like Sci-Fi you might want to try Ergo Proxy.  It's sort of a bizzare Ghost in the Shell meets Blade Runner set in a Wonderful Days/Now and Then, Here and There universe.

It's actually very good, though everyone is going insane waiting for the last two episodes.

Hard?  Really?  Just go in to Excaliber (2444 SE Hawthorne) and rent something at random.  I've watched nearly half of their stock and I haven't really been dissapointed with anything.  If you want to be a bit more targeted than that, I'd go and surf some reviews over at Anime News Network. Also, I assume if you're here, you've already seen all the cannonical shows like Bebop and Evangelion, right?

princessfrodo, I think that as far back as the original Bubblegum Crisis, more than half of all anime is Bladerunner in some form.

Book Blade Runner, not just Movie Blade Runner.

And yes, I know the name of the book is "Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep?", but hardly anyone knows that anymore.  :x

If you knock mecha out of the equation, your choices are much more limited.

Regarding princessfrodo's comment on the book, yes, there are cyborgs, and the book was written by Phillip K. Dick, one of the best and most prolific sci-fi writers.

Well if you want anime that is comedy and doesn't have robots/mecha in it, here are a few suggestions. (some are older so you might have seen them)

Chobits (she's a persicom, but cute! ^.^)
Comic Party (about students who love gaming and anime related stuff - comedy)
Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu! (military kid with no social skills protects girl student while she goes to school - comedy mostly in school setting)
GetBackers (duo recovery team with cool abilities - action comedy)
GTO/Great Teacher Onizuka (gang member turned H.S. teacher - comedy)
His & Hers Circumstances/Kare Kano (school comedy)
Maburaho (high school comedy with magic)

I'm going to mention:
Final Fantasy Unlimited (based on the games)
Kino's Journey (a very nice, low-key anime)
IGPX (you'll either love it or hate it.  It does involve mechas but mechas are not the focus of the plot.  It's a very unique racing anime)

Yes, he was about the same age as Timothy Leary, however, I think his writing was more influenced by the fact that he suffered from Scziophrenia.

Regarding other comments:
Sadly, I haven't seen Cromartie yet.  I'm waiting for Excalibur to finish their collection so I can rent them all.

Haibane Renmei is, in my opinion, possibly the best anime ever.  It's definitely not for everyone though.  Bear in mind that I also loved Lain and Texholyze.  Anyone who likes Haibane Renmei will likely also love Kino's Journey.

Actually, as been mentioned earlier, there -WAS- a book he wrote called 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,' and the Blade Runner movie was based off that book.

But there was a DIFFERENT SF story in a DIFFERENT book which was called Blade Runner, written by Alan E Nourse. I had recently stumbled across that one and it was quite a thriller of a story:

The Baby-boomers had overtaxed public health system cuz they (will) all retire at once, and to the government says no one can get healthcare unless they also submit to sterilization.

Many doctors with other ethics objected, quit, and found other jobs. Some of them, though, joined up with the city's youth gangs, and they would do illegal operations in secret hideaways or in people's homes - provided they could get the supplies. A 'blade runner' in THAT story was a kid who could break into a government hospital, defeat alarms, steal what was needed, and bring it to the underground doctor. Stuff like kitchen-table appendectomies.

Next, the street-doctors notice that some new kind of epidemic is breaking out and the government hospitals are ignoring the problem... (no more spoilers!)

Anyways, I went into the 'Blade Runner' movie with the hopes of a good medical + 'jewel robbery' type of thriller movie, and I got .... Sting. (aka Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner.) What a disappointment!

Andie & I have been enjoying

- Black Lagoon
- Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Monster

So far, no mecha in any of these.

We started Ergo Proxy; it looks dark and Lain-like. My nickname for it is 'Ergot Doxy.' We'll watch more after we finish up a few other series first; I hope it picks up quickly. We didn't really like Lain, Haibane Renmei, or Technolyze, but if you liked .hack//Sign, you might like Zegapain. There's good 3D computery-graphics stuff in it, much like GITS.

Also, Ichigo Mashimaru is light & silly.

Yes the studio had the rights to both books and used the title and a few other elements for the movie Blade Runner.  Iz read them both

Meg and I are watching this one right now too and really love it. It's really good! The premise requires you to stretch your brain to wrap your head around, and you're constantly going "huh?" but there's actually a purpose to that, rather than just trying to be "random", at least it seems like there is....

And it's sort of a high-school anime too, since it's set in a high-school, but it's not exactly one of those high-school slice-of-life animes. (I think someone asked about school animes?)

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya:

I've seen the first ep and two other eps randomly, though I didn't know what it was at the time.

Talking cat: plus
Bizarre introduction into a series: mega plus
Complete lack of logic: ultra plus

The series is great, but... don't sit down and watch it if you expect anything normal, sane, or non brain breaking.

Watch Kino's Journey is you want that kind of stuff.

I've been rewatcing Kino's Journey over the past week, and the remarkable thing about it is that all the episodes are completely self contained.  Each one is a tidy little alegory.  Each story is also fairly linear, which for a more philosophical anime, is rather unusual.  This sets it apart from a major subgenre that I can only refer to as David Lynch anime, i.e., Lain, Paranoia Agent, etc.

BTW, frodo, someone suggested watching Gantz in another thread.  I took the challenge - just finished yesterday.  Seen it yet?
