Definitely the Pillows.  I have collected a bit of j-pop, but its mostly just for the novelty value.  The Pillows, otoh, are just damn good rock 'n roll!

My favorite japanese band is Buck-Tick. They are such an interesting group of performers, not to mention fantastic musicians. They are hard to catagorize because they have done some different musical styles and had so many interesting looks throughout the years.

Atsushi has the most beautiful voice, one of the best I have ever heard. Sounds great recorded or live, even in monsoon-like rains.

Not only have they had song features as themes for Nightwalker, Trinity Blood and XXXoholic, but they have also done what I consider to be almost a gothic opera (!3th Floor with Moonlight)

Here are some of my favorite songs/videos in case anyone wants to check them out.

"Jupiter" written for Atsushi's mother who passed away.

"Kodou" performed at the SoYo fest in Korea. Fantastic performance is the the worst possible conditions.

"Muma - The Nightmare" from the 13th Floor with Moonlight concert.  The performance is about a man turning into a demon/devil. This is my favorite part of the concert, where he is talking about tearing down heaven and ripping up hell.

I'm a big fan of High and Mighty Color and anything touched by Yoko Kanno.

Mizutume Ramune and Here are my favorite songs by them respectfully. HaMC's Go on Progressive is an awesome ablum I suggest every fan of Jrock listen to, and the soundtrack "23ji no Ongaku" by Yoko Kanno is amazing.

From Bump of Chicken, my favorite song is "Taiyou", "Karma" (The opening song to Tales of the Abyss), and "K". From ELLEGARDEN, I like "Jitterbug" and "Gunpowder Valentine."

I get laughed at all the time for saying this, but I like Shonen Knife and Pizzicato 5 (older bands thought to be very kitchy when they made it in the states). I have seen Shonen Knife in concert and have their set list framed (written in Japanese) and they signed my poster :-)

Would love to check out some of the other bands mentioned in this thread.. thanks for the info and links!

I want to see more of the band that was on stage at the Night Club in Blade.  They are often mistakenly labeled Shonen Knife because they are on the credits but their music is only on the radio in the kitchen of the nightclub not the girls on stage.  All I can find is that they were called Bang Wa Cherry and the Song was Chin Chin.

You're not alone Antares, I dig shonen Knife as well.

Cibo Matto is OK, a little unpredictable.

I however am a sucker for anybody from the Hello! Project.

Morning Musume, Mini Moni, W, XYZ, et al.
I actually imported Mini Moni's movie, the Great Cake Adventure, even though I can't understand more than a couple of words.

the funny thing is I can't stand American pop music nowadays but the J-Pop (especially the videos) just grabs hold of my brain and won't let go.

Unfortunately I've never gotten into the j-rockers, no offense.

I've just started watching a show called Kokoro Library, and I really like the opening track, which is listed as "Beagle" by Yasuko Yamano, according to the ANN encyclopedia.  Unlike most anime tracks, however, this one has proven extremely difficult to locate.  Any ideas/suggestions?
