Getting rid of hackers
« on: January 12, 2007, 04:29:25 pm »
I've been hacked, and it's made me unable to access my email. Someone keeps changing my passwords on different sites, and they apparently changed my Yahoo security question, because it no longer accepts what I know is the right answer. How do I get my account back, and keep these bastards off my computer?

I never gave my information out to anyone, and I never downloaded any suspicious files. I have ZoneAlarm, which notifies me any time a program is trying to access the internet, and nothing suspicious ever did.

I actually think this was done by someone I know. How do I investigate without directly accusing her?

If she's a bad liar, directly accuse her xD

uhm... the only advice I can think of, is that you could go to her house or something, and check her computer to see if she is logged onto any of your accounts. For any site, of course. Most sites keep up your username on the 'log in' if you log out, so...

.-. uh... yeah... I'm not a good advice person, so bear with me.

Data Drain! *uses kite's magic bracelet*

The only thing you can really do is protect yourself better in the future. I don't know what sort of security you normally use so it's hard to tell you how to improve. Use Firefox instead of IE. Don't allow your browser to save your passwords. Log out when you are finished. Keep a couple anti-spyware programs on your computer, keep them up-to-date and run them often. Don't open email attachments from people you don't know, or even strange-looking attachments from people you do know. That's really basic stuff you probably already know.

Ask kylite who at Yahoo you can contact if it was only your Yahoo account you lost, he works for them. But don't expect him to give you any special priority, they don't like that there.

I have Spybot and it hasn't found anything out of the ordinary. I deleted a trojan a few days ago, but they've found their way back in since then.

I can't do anything involving email, because I haven't been able to access my email since yesterday morning.

Also, I called the police about this, and they refered me to the FBI, but the FBI's report page just had something that would email me back--which as I just said, can't help me at all.

I have AVG. It updates daily even. And I ran it last night after another update and it didn't find anything.

What is the extent of the damage? We'd need to know that to make any specific guesses as to what happened and what you could do about it.

Well, the initial sign that I had someone in my system was that they infiltrated my account on the board that I mod and started deleting things, starting with an entire forum. Every few days they'll try to change my password on that site, and now they've locked me out of my email.

Sounds like a personal attack to me. My bet is it is some one you know, or at the very least some one who knows you.

Don't you have to have a back-up e-mail for Yahoo?  Maybe you can send that password to your back-up e-mail and then get back into you account.
But I haven't logged into my Yahoo for a while...I'm not too sure.

I finally got back into my email! I was randomly entering past passwords and one of them worked!

But yes, I think it's someone I know too. She was banned from the board where I work, and I told her I didn't fully believe her side of the story, so she got all pissy on me. If any of you are on LJ, she's the one behind the Peter Tweig spam too.
