Serious Character?

I've got a friend who isn't wild and crazy like the rest of us but is willing to cosplay something as long as it's not too outrageous. He also is nice enough to put up with my hijinks so I was trying to find a serious, grown up type character that puts up with a lot of craziness from other characters in the anime.

So, what characters can you guys think of that are adult males, put up with crazy starring characters, and are pretty serious most of the time?

His requirements;
No Ouran or Evangelion (unfortunately),
A mustache would be good so he doesn't have to shave.
Preferably something modern (not a big fantasy fan).

I really want to find him SOMEthing to cosplay since he never has. He just hates all of my ideas for him so I'm hoping you guys'll figure out something good.

How about a character from a philosophical anime like Ginko from Mushishi or Shizu from Kino no Tabi (he could join my cosplay group )? The main characters aren't annoying but both of the characters are serious.

Your friend could go as "Old Man" from Doki Doki School Hours. He is the same age as everyone else in his class of highschoolers, but dresses more sensibly, has some stubble (at least), and everyone else in his class is pretty silly.

General/Admiral/Whatever Armstrong from Full Metal?

Or what about Tenchi's dad or grandpa?  Both have mustaches and aren't too outrageous.  The clothes would be simple.

You know what, Tenchi's grandpa would be perfect. Just serious enough, badass, and puts up with all sorts of looniness.

I was going to suggest Quent from Wolf's Rain, which is why I asked the age question.
He's serious, and he's an alcoholic, which I guess some people see as bad-ass.

Both characters are old, so I guess the age question didn't matter did it? XD

I was thinking of Lt. Cmdr. Kalinin from Full Metal Panic!, but that may for personal reasons (I like the series)
