Bleach cosplay question
« on: April 28, 2007, 09:27:23 am »
Hi I am looking for place to buy a place to buy a soul reaper uniform.  Anyone know a good place that will tailor them to your size?  I intend to cosplay as just a normal background soulreaper who no one knows.

Thanks

go to ebay and buy a black hakama and kimono and some sandals and socks, you should be able to get your stuff fairly cheaply and fit to your size
And now I'm a catgirl?

You can find the costumes on ebay. My friend got a very well built Ichigo-Bankai form outfit off there. And another friend bought Soi-Fon's outfit, same senario. Well build, not utter crud, decent price.

Oh do keep in mind that purchased costumes are not allowed into the costume construction judging part of the cosplay competition (the whole point of doing costume construction judging is to acknoledge the effort that people put into creating their costumes... )

i was just looking up to see what ebay was selling Bleach Ichigo at. the cost of buying the costume itself is not bad but $60 shipping. and then i still need to get the sword... i can only image how much a 51" sword is going to cost to ship....-.-;

edit: blah $28.98 for shipping but $54.99 for it...

Yeah, definately go to Ebay, I got an Ichigo Bankai costume there made for my size. The costume cost 25 bucks and the shipping was about 50 since it was from China.

Okay as for my zanpakutō I was ganna go for a Normal run of the mill Katana but one of my fellow Kumoricon companions said we can not bring live steel.  Even a cheap display Katana like the one I have.

Is this true?

Correct. Live steel is not allowed. Heck. My friend got mauled by a copy on the street because he was believed to have had a live steel weapon.
(Turned out to be wood.)
I'd advise buying a wooden practice sword.

In general, you'll find that tromping about with a sword can get to be a pain, especially if you haven't carried a sword around before.  I've taken Iaido, and know how to carry a sword and walk with it properly, but not many other attendees have had this experience. there's a lot more to properly carrying a sword that simply jamming it into your obi. The way you move has to be different and you have to be more aware of the amount of space you are now taking up (the sword essentially expands your width to its length...). If you aren't aware of the extra space you're taking up, you'll be bumping people and banging the sword on objects all the time.

Yes, carrying a sword looks cool, but if you want to sit down, you have to remove it from your obi; when you go into the dealer's area, everyone will be clumped up around the table you want to view and you sword will get bumped many times (this can hurt you if it happens enough times...sometimes it'll get thwacked hard enough that you may be thumped in the face by the hilt!); and when you're walking through the halls, you have to be aware that no one is really paying attention to who's got a sword, so the sword will be bumped constantly.

When I had my Sesshoumaru costume, the first time I wore it I had my sword, but quickly learned that it's so much easier to get through massive crowds when I don't have the sword.

The reason they don't allow live steel is the same reason why they don't allow real guns (or things that look just like real guns). It's just not a good idea to have lots of weapons around in crowds. Another reason is because at least 90% of cosplayers have no clue how to properly use or carry a real weapon safely.

Agreed.
I myself know fully well how to handle lives guns and rifles, having grown up around them and been taught very carefully how to operate them.
But, you'll find, the majority of people DON'T.
Then you get stupid people.
"OH LOL I'LL POINT THIS AT THIS GUYS FACE EVEN IF IT'S LOADED. OOPS I PULLED THE TRIGGER."
"-so obviously bleeding from the face-"
I mean, crap. I've seen people shoot at rocks from 2 feet away. e_e; People are morons, so there has to be rules to prevent it from happening.

as a army brat aswell as a guy who taught some swordsmenship I do not like sitting around people who do not know they are doing. I am not gonna give the full story but I will make it short, pretty decent scar on my left arm... so if you feel the need to carry something on your hip to fill out your costume just use a bokken or something

Well I was hopeing for similar rules like Sakora where you could bring swords as long as they were secured via convention standard.  however things are different so oh well.

As for weapons training I have a great expanse of knowledge on firearms but I would never walk into a convention with one.  I can understand why my cheap $15 Katana would not be allowed eaither.  All it takes is one guy to walk into someone who is poseing and he looses apendage or worse.

As I said before dose anyone know a place that sells wooden swords with a sheath?

I'd hate to get hurt because of something like that. xX;;

Check ebay and amazon.....My friends themselves made their own sheaths for their bokken.

Making your own swords/weapons out of wood or sign board is a lot more fun, and gives you a nice sense of accomplishment, anyway.
Also, you can make them far more accurate that way.

My friend goes as Byakuya and he made his own sword. A few people saw a pic form SC and commented on how it was the best they had seen.

Well my only problem is the woodworking tools that  I do have available would not be able to make much.

Also dose anyone know of anywhere that has a good pattern for a soul reaper uniform?  I was about to get a ebay version when a friend told me to try the home made version first.  I thought at first a normal Kimono would do but there are too many types.

I noticed on the Kumoricon Policies that it says the following:

"The staff will determine if your prop is acceptable within the Convention Space. Props which are not allowed within the convention space include, but are not limited to:

Air-soft or projectile weapons
Live (sharp enough to cut) steel
Props wide enough or long enough to inhibit flow of traffic."

Doesn't this mean that you can bring a real sword as long as it isnt sharp enough to cut anyone and remains in the sheath? I was told by one of the staff(I can't remember who) that I could buy a sword and "dull it to meet the requirements".

You need a black hakama and a pair of thigh length kimonos (one black, one white), plus a white obi (essentially a rectangle about 9" wide & long enough to go around your waist 2x + have about 15" to tie it....

Hakama patterns available from Folkwear and Simplicity has Kimono patterns. I've seen free patterns available online (they may not be as good as the purchasable patterns, but they are free), so do a search on hakama pattern and kimono pattern.

This changes everything!  My katana has a hard time gutting warm butter let alone flesh.  However I will have a plan B in case I would be turned down.

Also for a pattern dose anyone have a link to a place where you can purchase a pattern?

Of course!   :D

Hakama pattern:
http://roundearth.stores.yahoo.net/hakformarar.html
OR    http://www.folkwear.com/151.html
Supposedly this site   http://luxnova.home.mindspring.com/samuraigame/hakama.html   has a free hakama pattern on it, but the site was "unavailable" when I tested the link.

Important info on Hakama (incl how to tie one and how to store it to preserve the pleats properly):
http://www.loyola.edu/maru/hakama.html

Info on Japanese clothing: http://www.japanesekimono.com/index.htm
and in the book  "Make your own Japanese clothing" (available at Uwajimaya in Beaverton)

lots o' patterns:  http://roundearth.stores.yahoo.net/patterns.html

You can also find the FolkWear patterns at Fabric Depot (122nd and Stark in Portland)

No, I don't like spending too much money either, but I will have plenty of money to throw around by the time I need this stuff so I don't mind so much. Plus, it's for something that I truly enjoy, which doesn't happen very often.
