I need help with AMV stuff

Recently I got a new Mac laptop and I've slowly been figuring things out with it.  I tried to run an AMV on it but it didn't work.  As far as I can figure out my laptop can play .mpegs but not .avis (.wmvs I'm pretty much not even thinking about).

Does anyone know if there is some way I could play .avi on Quicktime on my Mac?

Do you have Real Player? That usually plays .avi's despite operating system.

Every time I have this sort of question I immediately go to doom9.org - they are awesome experts about video encoding, decoding, players, etc. Try them.
