What is the weapons policy for 07?
« on: July 30, 2007, 05:08:04 pm »
I've looked through the forum and haven't found an official or even temporary weapons policy for this year, 2007. Specifically I have a question about swords. I have a steel sword and was wondering if the ban on metal weapons is going to change with the new hotel location. I understand if no hotel specifics are known yet, but it'd be nice to have some sort of guidelines up, even if they're just "Follow last years rules for now." I know I can't be the only one with weapon questions...

Leave it at home.

No live steel, no stage steel, not even peace bound, not even dulled, not even welded into the sheath, not even if you bought it in the dealer's room (which you actually can this year).

While we're at it no air soft no matter how painted, taped, disabled, plugged, or nonfunctional.
And no props wider than you with your elbows stuck out (1.5 you wide).

That about cover it yojimbo?

The policies have been up for awhile, but on the main site, not the forums:

From the policy page:
Air-soft or projectile weapons
Live (sharp enough to cut) steel
Props wide enough or long enough to inhibit flow of traffic

At the yojimbo meeting they listed any kind of metal blade, even stage steel or flex steel. the sharpness didn't even come up. Is this different now?

That's why the important stuff is on the main site, and not just the forums (or not the forums at all).

This will be added when I have time to modify the source code of SMF, our forum software, to add it. Meanwhile, we have to make do with the software that is available. And the main site URL has always been www.kumoricon.org.

I'm not sure where to ask this question but i'll ask it here cause I think it's the right place.

My friend wanted me to check before she bought these knitting needles for her sheik costume. (here's a picture of some...she wanted some shorter ones.) http://www.wiseneedle.com/string-or-nothing/content/imgs/needles.jpg

are they okay? or should she get wood ones? would she have to piece bond every one of them?

So what I'm getting at is; no steel - no matter how dull.
No matter the type.
Nor if it is peace bound.
None at ALL.
Correct?

I assumed a Yojimbo would respond to this one by now but in their absence I don't think they are going to bother you about knitting needles.

Eeyeah I read them.
But it doesn't answer my question!
It's just clarification really.
There's no acceptions to any sort of steel?
The weapon I was going to buy is made of stainless steel.
That's why I was wondering if there were any acceptions.

exceptions would be such items as the top of muroku's staff or other parts and bits, BUT not the entire thing,.

Ok, so only parts?
I was gonna purchase a souba, that comes with a sheath.
I'd have no problem keeping it sheathed the entire time, since it says on the description that it's intended only for display, but even then, I wouldn't have a reason to unsheath it.

K, so this is a bit sticky. We DO NOT have the same restrictions we had in last year's hotel.

This is our policy. I confirmed it with Ops Director tonight.

NO live steel. This is anything that can cut, anything with a blade sharper than a really dull butter knife. Absolutely not allowed, not even in a sheath.

Stage steel - really dull steel with a rounded edge that can't cut. This IS allowed currently per our contract with the hotel, when checked by KCon staff and peace tied. You must keep the metal in the sheath, and never brandish (raise and/or wave) the sword. BUT if we perceive any problem, or the hotel changes it's mind for fear of potential harm, don't be surprised if you have to take it to your room/car/home.

Basically, if you've got any prop that you question, bring it, show it to the Yojimbo on check in, and let us figure out whether or not it poses a risk. The policies are intentionally vague because there is no way without seeing some props that we can tell if a prop might pose a potential risk or pass without comment. I'd hate to make a list of banned items, only to have someone say, "It's not a gun, it's a CANNON, and those aren't on the list!" :D

There's just no way to tell from a picture or description if a blade might cut or a pikachu's head might explode in a rain of flames!!!!1111 So show us, and we'll let you know if it's okay.

You'll be loved, you'll be loved, like you never have known. When memories of me will seem more like bad dreams. Just a series of blurs, like I never occurred. Someday, you will be loved.

Question since I figured I could post it in here rather then make a whole new thread.

So I have multiple props for my two costumes and I was wondering if I should bring them all when I get my first costumes stuff peace bonded or if I should just wait until Monday when I bring out my second costume~

you could find a yojimbo to get them bonded on Saturday, but I don't suggest lugging them all through the line, pre-reg or not!
