Product placement in Anime
« on: August 25, 2007, 03:25:56 am »
So I've been watching "Darker than Black" recently and I've seen a TON of Pizza Hut stuff all over the place! This kind of makes me angry, but at the same time I realize that it's necessary to fund the series.

So has anyone else noticed Product placement in Anime?

I've noticed some product placement but not at the same time.  Like in ah my goddess, they have a pomy tv and sometimes goto the heaven 11.  It is weird
Yaoi crossplay... is actually Yuri.

They do that with beer a lot. when they chug the whole can of beer and slam it to the table you usually see the label clearly.

Oh yeah, a bunch of times in Love Hina (the manga).  Most of the products are stuff you can only find in Japan though but they are take offs of the original.  Ken Akamatsu will show a part of the label but it will be angled just enough to hide a part of the name.  Example: "epsi" soda.

There is a brief shot of a Bud Lite can (I think it is a Bud lite, I could be wrong) in Macross: Do You Remember Love? thought it isn't product placement (the can only appears for a split second, then it turns back into a missile).

I believe Code Geass was sponsored by Pizza Hut, and it had random placement of the chain's logo.

I don't know how much actual "product placement" is in older anime, but I know that a lot of animators use to love to throw in their equivalent of easter eggs into their animation.

I seem to remember an episode of Digimon (first season) where the kids went to a McDonald's.

Oh, I almost forgot. Semi-related pic:

Frame immediately following the episode, so might not technically be product placement, but nonetheless...

That would be the sponsors. Preceeding and proceeding most television anime series, you get a sponsors message. Most digisubbers are nice enough to leave them in.

I've seen more name changing of really popular products and such so that they don't get sued. XD For example, I'm sure we've all seen the McDonald's golden arches turned upside down to make them a W instead of an M. That's the most common example, but I'm sure if I thought about it I could come up with some more.

I've seen on like that in anime/manga but it only had one arch.  Soooo... an upside-down U.

Pizza Hut? In darker than black? I haven't seen the series but Code Geass has Pizza Hut all the time too.

I didn't know that pizza hut sponsored the series, which explains why it's in there, only companies that directly impacted the series has their brand in the show, but product placement has been around for a while but back then they would put parodys of the representing products. In Happy Lessons the computer in the nurse's office ran on Windows xxxP.

Dunno if this counts since it's a video game, but Persona 3 has tons of products! Although they're all renamed. =P Like Mad Bull (Red Bull), Moonkist (Sunkist), Aguafeena (Aquafina), Doctor Pepper (obvious), Manta (Fanta), 1UP (7UP)... the list goes on and on! There's also Wildduck Burger. It's looks like McDonalds with it's "W" for arches and very... questionable food. Your courage literally goes up for just braving it!

So yes, toooons of products in this awesome video game. =3

The point wasn't the presence of advertising, but rather the ungodly level of inappropriateness of what the freakin' McDonald's logo was plastered on.
