Turk Coffee: Come see us!
« on: August 27, 2007, 12:19:07 am »
Hey guys!

This is Anna, member and cofounder of the Turk Coffee Cosplay group. We attended our first group convention together back in April at Sakura Con, and are bringing the maddess to Kumoricon. Unfortunately, we won't have a skit this year, but we're going to be doing some pretty cool things around the con that we wanted to let everyone know about!

Wonder what would happen if the Turks actually distributed coffee? Well at Kumoricon 2007 you get to find out.  Members of Turk Coffee Cosplay will be wandering the halls handing out our patented coffee along with gil and some other special goodies. Wanna know what's inside our coffee gift packs? Then find us in the halls and ask us anything you want.

What do we do with this gil, you ask? During the weekend, the members of Turk Coffee will be walking around and collecting gil--not money, but GIL--to see which member/character you want to see covered in silly string. The member/character who has collected the most gil by Monday afternoon will be doused in silly string by their fellow members in front of a live audience.

We are also constructing (and almost finished with) a small set replica of the gondola from Gold Saucer, shown in the date scene in Final Fantasy VII. For those of you unfamiliar, see the photo below! We plan on having it set up near Gaming for most of the convention, and taking it to the park as well. It'll be open for any cosplayers that are interested to take "date pictures". Even if you don't have a camera, we will, and we'll be putting our photos online after the convention. Just look for the set & the Turks. (At least one of us will be with it at all times.)

It's going to be a lot of fun so keep an eye out for us in the halls. We'll be hard to miss.

This is a genius idea! Now, I'll be dressed as the Vault Dweller (Fallout Series, RPG, go look it up) and be carrying around hub bucks (bottle caps, currency in game). Will you guys accept hub bucks? Perhaps we can set up some sort of... currency exchange program! I'd say hub bucks will be slightly more inflated, so maybe 2 hub bucks per gil? Hahaha.

We need to make a Convention Economics Guild (CEG for short) where we can manage the echange rates for Gil, US dollars, yen, hubbucks, Canadian Dollars, Universal Credits, bars of gold pressed latinum, rupies, and GP (and eventually we might be able to get Kumorikash in the system).
It'll all be based on the cost of one box of Pocky.

Pocky Club National Bank will be glad to oversee the proceedings to make sure that the negotiations don't break down.

Mr_Mustash: Yay! We'll be glad to see ya~

EveofAbyss: Awesome~ Yeah, I know you were one of the people on the Jenova's Witness thread I talked to :3 Glad your g/f likes coffee; I was a little worried not all of the attendees would be too thrilled with that. XD

QElderHell: Ara, who're you cosplaying; Vincent? I'm sure we could get some pictures with you. Though I'm -not- sure what sort of pictures. XD (Pictures of us "beating people up" seemed to be popular at Sakura Con.)

kyletothejones: I think we could accept that! Very cool that you're doing it, too~ I don't know that we'll have extra gil on hand, so don't worry about exchanging. I'd think the rest of my group would be interested enough that you made a currency, too, and would take it.

TomtheFanboy: Brilliant idea. :D You seem to be full of those.

2 to 1, as it inspires me to drink more beer to make up the difference! Hurray, beer. Oh, for a frame of reference, I will be easy to spot. Look for the big blonde hair, blue jumpsuit, large 13 on the back. I'll have a gas mask with me and possibly a sign "WTS [Water Chip] ?"

OK so 2 hub bucks for one bottlecap?

Because I've calculated the scrap metal value of tin alloy bottle caps and black market dollar value FFXI Gil as being 8.14 Gil per bottlecap. Which would mean 16.28 gil equal one hub buck (or 4.07 Gil if you go the other way). Eaither way you're very generous.

Just so you all know, bottlecaps are the other currency in the Fallout setting. If I could find the price of an "iguana kabob" I may have been able to do the conversions myself.

Here's the rest of my findings;

This is something I've wondered about for a long time. I know the term was chosen because a "Young Turk" is supposed to have the same connotation as a "Mafioso". The turks definitely have that feel to them.

I've heard the term used in a lot of movies, usually by older people, sometimes by European immigrants. So I wonder, if someone acted like a mobster and was rough with people and strong armed them, would they be called Turkish? Is that the sort of image the Ottoman Empire embedded in the consciousness of Europeans?

Is there an etymologist in the house?

As far as other contexts, I don't know where the term originated. But, in FFVII, TURKS is an acronym for Tactical Urban Reconnaissance and Killing Specialists. :3

I bring you a couple of pictures and video of our shenanagins. These may help you get an idea of what to expect from us at the convention:

Well D: i still say you should serve turkish coffee. Many people will scream and throw it at you thinking it's mud, the ones with a pinch of intelligence and an open mind will actually enjoy it.

Guys seriously, make sure there's no coffee in those bags. It will confuse the hotel and make them think you're selling food/undercutting their coffee shop. Make it more clear that "Turk Coffee" is just a joke and a play on words and not an actual free sample campaign or solicitation of business.

I went through a lot of this sort of stuff with Pocky Club so I know how easy it is to get in trouble.

I like the look of the gondola. I was totally confused until I went back and looked at the screenshot you posted and, oh yeah, the gondola wasn't a giant gold blob like the rest of the saucer! >_<

Do you guys have velvety cushions to sit on?

EveofAbyss, I don't think it was actually our idea! Someone on the Jenova's Witness thread mentioned that it'd be cool a while back, and I signed my group up to do it. XD

TomtheFanboy, a different member is currently in contact with guspasho about the coffee, and if it doesn't work out, we do have non-coffee stuffed bags. I understand what you're saying and all, I'm just more in charge of the gondola project, and said other member is in charge of the bags. :3 So whatever happens, we'll be okay.
And sadly, no, no velvety cushions! ;o; We wanted to make the benches, but there really wouldn't have been room for us to transport them, so we have folding chairs! Yay! XD

Not that I would try and steal your thunder you guys have put a lot of work into something that benefits everyone and I respect that.

I guess i can deal with a lack of velvet cushions. What do we get to look at through the window? do you guys have a large print of the Gold Saucer to hang back there?

If it gets placed so there's room back there, I want to set up a shot of Barret and Cloud in the gondola with a pouty Aeris and Tifa peeking in the window. That's be hilarious! Must assemble cosplay team to help me get my shot!

You wouldn't be stealing our thunder; it wasn't our idea in the first place! XD So that's fine. We just went a little crazy and actually decided to DO it.
Actually, we did something cool with the window. Because in most of the game shots, the window's just black, we've got a black curtain that can be pulled down behind the window. However, we made it so the curtain can be pulled up and tied out of view, so if people want to stand in the window or have whatever scenery in the background, that can work too.

Just so you all know, bottlecaps are the other currency in the Fallout setting. If I could find the price of an "iguana kabob" I may have been able to do the conversions myself.

Here's the rest of my findings;
http://pockyclub.com/conventioncurrency.rtf

Hehe, confusion abounds! hub bucks are actually the bottle caps used as currency. That is the name of them. So when I say hub bucks, I mean bottle caps. I'm generous about the conversion because the higher requirement of bottle caps means the more beers I have to drink in order to obtain said caps.

Hah, I felt like a silly fan girl every time they walked by. I got all giddy and jumpy, and I was seriously afraid that Rude was going to sock me in the jaw.

Like that one time with the guys at that one place with the thing? Or like the other time next to the place with the other thing?

Glad you all had fun with the silly string action though. We were semi biting our nails on how that would be recieved. And seeing over 1000 gil in my box; seriously you all are just cruel. All the perfect creases and spot free jacket... gone. *tear... but it's hidden by the shades*
