Unemployed unite!
« on: August 28, 2007, 11:17:46 am »
Normally, I don't like to talk about this much, but after being reject a third time for a job after having a stellar interview, I am feeling very lost. I know there are a few of you out there. Maybe if we can put our heads together, perhaps  then we will not be denied a job while we're a mass. ;)

I've tried everything and it has gotten me no where other then heartache: temp services, cold calling, craigslist, classifieds, unemployment. I have a couple more sources, one of which is though my church. Been kinda dragging my feet on it. I am a graduated individual with experience and a desire to work hard. And why am I not employed? I dunno.

So, I would like to hear your stories. At least then, I won't feel like it is just me.

i know how hard it is to get regected for a job

i really needed a job this summer and i have a lot of experince at jo annes stores, so i went in and the manager i spoke to was like "wait your trained for everything, don't even bother fill out an applacation!, come talk to me tomarrow"

we he was sick that day and i was interviewed by a lady who was like"gee you avalibiltiy sucks but i might be able to squese in a 4 (am) to 7am shift a week or somthing, i'll have (guy i originaly spoke to) call you back"
well week passes no call and my friend crystal hooked me up with a job interview on the next monday
the sunday nigh a differnt guy from joanns called me to talk about coming in the next day and i'm like for what and he said to train, to work, now i had a job intweview that day for a really good job so i turned it down and i did get the really good job that payed more
but
a week ago when i wanted to know if i was staying for fall i was informed that they were switching to full time receptionest instead of student workers, thanks for the hard work

the thing that hurt was they were interveiwing for the job the day i found out so they could have told me sooner :(
and i is getting married so i doo need cash but with full time school retail runs from me

Yeah, I know how that goes. That's why I fought so hard to get student work. I was told that K-mart and Fred Meyers would not hire full-time students because of scheduling.

Good luck with your classes and again congrads on getting married. At least you have a shoulder to cry on when it gets really hard.  ;)

Ah, the dreaded application process. Though I have to say, I have never had one that was more then three pages.

Well, look at it this way...your are short on money, but long on time. Or at least that is what one song artist said. ^^

Gah I had a job at a group home, but didn't pass the trail period. And I tried really hard, I had to be a house keeper/nurse/banker/and bodyguard all at once. This happened in the spring, just as my friends finally got jobs u_u0 ...it still stings, especially the way they told me by summoning me to the office and then having the two bosses tell me, gah and before she said anything she noticed my nervous expression and told me to smile! SMILE We're letting you go >.< grr...

That was pretty rotten. It will sting for a while. I had a similar experience with my last job. Let's just say my manager made me feel about 2 inches tall and as smart as a parking cone. But hang in there, at least you know what to either avoid or what did not work last time.

Ya, though I don't think I'll ever try that type of job again. Good luck to you and thanks. ^_^

This all depends on your profession, for me I'm an undergrad studying Electrical Engineering. The demands of engineers are very high these days, so all you have to do is to do well in school and a job would be lined up after you graduate, or that's what my parents say, (except it was for the field of medicine, but it's not different with engineering) however the hiring process is quite rugged and cut-throat. I've sent out many resumes to the engineering firms and never heard back from them. Although I don't know if I should be putting my 2-cents in this thread since I am currently employed at a company which I choose to not divulge the identity of, ask me later if you want. But I've taken a class where they teach you how to write in manners to not get yourself fired. I think that class was very helpful in the way that it makes you pay more attention to who you're trying to appeal to. Though the course was mainly common sense but now I'm more aware of the little details in the works. Technical wiriting is the course.

Motivation and pride can really affect what kind of job you get. My first job was working for my aunt in a packing shed in Brewster, and you know what happens with family businesses, 80 hour weeks and no overtime. I hated that job, but it became a motivation for me to never work in that enviornment again, for if I don't find a job next year, my father will force me back into that place. So I started searching, desperately, for anything that's not packing cherries.

I know the feeling of being unemployed, it's boring wasting your life away at home while all your friends are making money and buying neat toys. So my advice to you guys is to start early in your applications, and take anything you can get (well almost anything). Do what you can to appeal to the other side and convince them that you are fit for the position. and finally don't give up. keep trying. Out of the hundreds of resumes I've sent out, I've gotten 2 interviews. you must be more aggressive when doing these interviews for there are other people competing for the same job, and you must show the hiring people that you're better than all of them. It's quite vicious. But don't use that same attitude in acedemia, you'll loose valuable commrades that way.

When I first moved here 2 years ago, I applied EVERYWHERE.  No joke, even places that were not what I thought I would ever want to take, and I kept not hearing back or getting rejected which was super annoying because I was MORE than qualified, and people knew it too they would be like "well you have all this experience... Why do you want to work here?"  Anyway I kept trying and I am not talking like applied to one place and waited, I just kept applying to everywhere I could think of and suddenly got offered three different jobs and now I  love my work and have been there 2 years in September =D

I can at least say that when I was rejected, I was treated very professionally and with diginity. I got two emails back, one from HR and one from the guy who called me in for an interview. I had asked why I was not hired. It wasn't anything I did wrong, they were looking something rather different then what they posted for the position. Although they liked talking with me, but they felt it was not the right fit. He told me though that anyone who does hire me would be very lucky.

Doesn't necessarily make the situation any easier. I do have one tentative lead, but that's not looking so great either.

Persistence does prevail, but in the meanwhile, it's awful and degrading. Plus I am not even trying to get work within my degree field. I know I don't have a flying monkey's chance. Not at least without a master's degree.

don't you just hate those kinds of jobs? where they only take masters and Doctorates. Jobs like that usually involve research of some kind, in the field of science anyways. I chose my profession based on what I'm good at, and how much demand there is for that type. apparently Engineering is in high demands these days, and you don't have to be a masters or PhD to get hired either. and they pay a lot. Even interns are making at least 30k a year.

Most of the time when I get rejected, I get that generic email saying "....unfortunately we are not going to continue with your application..." Generally it's going to be professional. For me I would take whatever people say with a grain of salt. Even though my manager says that he's impressed with the work I'm doing, I can't be sure until I get hired there for certain. Though it does sound very good, and I'm going to keep that in a positive light, but just in case, I'm not going to overinflate those words. I can only hope that their next year's budget can allow them one more position. My manager says he'll offer me that spot if there is a space. But I'm going to count my eggs before they hatch.

with my major psychology, to get a good job you either need experince or a masters, so which is why  figure:
this year (my last year as a student then i graduate(oh god i hope!!))
i will keep an eye out for part time jobs that will it my scedual
if not there are vollenter opratunities on campuse that would will look good on a resume, they have a weekly shift at the womans resorce center that would be good, and possibly be staff for k-con next year,
then i graduate and get a job, any semi-okay job perferably part time so i have free time to plan weddng stuff then january of 09 get hitched and ater honeymoon look for better job yay!!!

wow getting hitched... That's way beyond me at this point, although I hope to graduate by next year as well. though my plan is different than yours. It's more like graduate get a good paying job, all in a while see if I can find a GF, (unlikely) and then go from there, I'm afraid to go foreward in life without good financial support. Engineering man! a nerdy major to go with my nerdy personality =P

you are going to make buku bucks as an engineer, seriously you have nothing to worry about financially.  As for the romance part, those things seem to just fall into place for you so don't sweat it ^^

Just as long as you keep up your certification and your education. And you never knew when the market can get oversaturate with engineers....and the type of engineer also depends. But what do I know... I can't even get a lousy job as a receptionist let alone get back into the field as an archaeologist. I would love to get back into a more creative job...even if it is just editing pictures to use in a program or presentation. So if anyone knows someone who could use my photo shop skills... ;)

Had two promising job interviews last week just before the con....and both of them fell through. Had a call yesterday about a job I submitted my resume to...and it a game of phone tag...or rather the woman there has been avoiding my return calls about setting up a time to interview. Mind you, they called me about setting up an interview...or at least the woman who is not in the office until next week.

Well, I hope that works out for your Jaz! Volunteer work always looks good on a resume...but what looks best is having a college degree. ^^ At least so I am told. Sometimes I have to wonder about it being more of a curse.  ;)

You will have to let us know how that works out.

I agree with you on not focusing too hard on work with school coming up, I'm taking 16 credit hours at PCC Rock Creek this fall.
