how come you're not getting it back? It was seized, right? I've known people that got their PCs seized for stuff they were actually involved with and they got it back.

I mean, once they've made a mirror image of your hard drive there's no point in keeping it anymore. It serves no purpose except to be sold for their profit. Which is BS, and why you should try and get it back.

Two different raid 0 arrays?  And one using high-spec workstation hard drives too?  Are you sure that money wouldn't just be better spent by adding more/improved system memory?  After all, memory is even faster then hard disk, and if you throw enough ram at it any modern OS will cache up to a few gigs (windows lesser flavours not so much, but it's an artificial restriction) of recently accessed data.  Only seek time would really be improved, and that only for massive data-sets.

It is a pretty bad ass computer. The sad thing is that it'll be outdated in a month. :(

I'd be too scared to do RAID without any type of parity.  :-\

And you never answered my question!  :P

Well the processor is the top-of-the-line AMD socket AM2 processor. The new FX series processors need a different kind of socket and the mobos are much more expensive, and you need two FX processors to make them run decently
maybe they are AMD's top of the line but check this out

Everyone I've known that had their PCs seized has said you need to keep constantly bugging them. Otherwise they'll just keep them. There's no motivation for them to give the stuff back. If you give up on it, they sell it for a profit.

You might want to try and contact an expert on this kind of thing and see what you can do.

Yah... I'm very happy about it! I was suprised that no one had mentioned it yet... Tom was making all kinds of fun of me at the meeting. Lol

You thought that was me making fun of you? Oh my poor friend, I was trying to be encouraging. I was also very busy with the elections and bylaws and whatnot, a lobbyist has lots of work to do during elections.

I was also not going to give her the wrong impression of myself as I represent Pocky club and (to an extent) the staff. We always need more people to draw in and assimilate. Plus I got your back man, I gotta make you look good at this point in your "relationship". I don't want to ruin your first date at a Kumoricon event.
Of course if she's not around next time then there will be no mercy. >:D

Actually, I would have given both of you a hard time if I was sure of her identity on the forums. She is...."upside down" on the forums right? <_<

What?  No quad-core 12GHz processor?

melchizedek, check the date on that.  It's over a year old.  That's the equivalent of comparing 2 1980 car models as a modern day referrence to the current models' reliability.  AMD's pulled way ahead in the last year and a half.

I think she means you'd literally program all the instructions for the CPU and solder all your own chips onto a motherboard.  ;D

Making chips without microtechnologies is hard. :(

I might make some usb game controllers from scratch at some point, if my little business gets to the point where it's too much of a legal risk to take apart cheap USB num pads and just solder to those. :P

Not bad my good sir, not bad. You picked much of the same stuff I'm going to be putting into my desktop within a month or so, though I'll probably be going with an Intel CPU.

Well, if you still insist on the (more dangerous) RAID 0 striping for insane performance, at double-risk of data-loss you're mostly stuck.  If you want to use the other 10K rpm drive and start a degraded RAID 1 mirror you should be able to make due until your replacement arrives.

Yeah I'm a fan of RAID 1 for that reason. I'll take the slightly lower performance (because the write access time is the worse of both drives, and having to disable the write cache), in exchange for the increased data security, any day.

If you get one of those $300-$400 RAID cards, you can actually get hugely increased performance even with data security: On a RAID-5 array (or other configuration), there is a large (128MB or 256MB) write cache on the RAID controller, backed up with a battery on the card. The battery holds the memory for 72 hours in case of power loss. What this means? All writes are "instantaneous" because the controller reports the write as complete the moment it hits the cache.

The downside? You have to test the battery periodically, and if the battery backup fails because you wait too long to power up the computer after a power loss, or just for any other reason after a power loss, your file system and/or data is now corrupted. So I decided just to stick with regular RAID 1.

There are really two strategies for backing up data.  There's the traditional way (tapes and such), which works if you have relatively Massive data backup and rotation needs.  Then there's the more modern way (enabled thanks to the massive growth in storage density over the last few decades), which Google noted publicly.  Essentially multiple-site hard disk storage.  However without isolation of storage locations you gain no safety from massive failure or local disaster.  (Though depending on your data needs that may be sufficient.)
