I gave up on the permit test after getting dud tests twice in a row.
Basically, both times, half the questions were based on arbitrary numbers, so when asked how fast it is to travel at night? I answered 45 mph. The "right answer" was 55 mph, but it's arbitrary. A car with good headlights, an alert driver, and a clean windshield could likely travel safely at 70mph. On my bike, which has a pathetic excuse for a headlight, I'm "driving blind" on a moonless night at 22mph.
Written driving tests are a joke: they're a matter of luck, or utter memorization. Just take driver's ed and get a license. The money for the class costs the equivalent of 2500 miles worth of gasoline; approximately the same amount it would cost to drive for 50 hours. How many hours do you have to drive with the permit?
Driver's ed: because the alternative is stupid.
