Quick question about college
« on: March 19, 2008, 06:56:47 pm »
How many credits would you need per term in order to be a full-time student at PSU (or at any college for that matter)? Isn't it like around 12?

So 6 is half time and 12 is full time.

This is important if someone is taking student loans.  Take a term off or less than 6 hours and they start asking for payments.

last year i too 12-14 credits a term and thats a good work load, you get a lunch and some days off a week depending on your scedual like school tuesday thursday classes, 8-12 2 hours off the 2-4, with mon-wen-friday off,
16 is what i am talking now , (tho really it depends on the classes your taking) cuz you get an smular amount of home work, and as i have been taking 400 level psy classes i have been drowndng in papers
and tests that are all the same day some times =high stress
i would start at 12 credit and see how well you handle it, at least for the 1st year,
and maybe take an extra class if it is easy the next, this can make your last year of collage not so crunched

12 is full time and for the first year you should probably try to stay close to that. Dont expect to have much time to do anything at all outside of school if you get up to 16. I personally will be taking no more than 9 at a time while working.

14 credits is considered full time, by my past scheduling, so maybe 12-14.

If your high school is paying tuition for you, perhaps skip out on a class, become a super senior and get a free year of college.

Freshman year is stupidly easy at PSU. At least for an art student. I barely had any work outside of class and that which I did very rarely took more than an hour or two to complete. What's you're major? Because that will have alot to do with how many credits you can and should take.
Someday...I'll get around to you.

@ melchizedek: my high school doesn't pay for it. It's either through Clackamas Community College or PSU

@ Lit_of_Fey: I'm majoring in business [marketing] so I think they said somewhere around 172 credits, if memory serves me right

I think frat is short for fraternity which are for boys.  Girls have sororities unless you think someone should stay in a house full of party animal men for their last year of school.

 :o

Though most people that go to PSU tend to finish up in 5 years and some change.

Well, 9 or 10 credits was the most I did per term when I was working on a masters at PSU, and I think that qualified me as full time.

2 things to stress
#1 certin classes are once a year only at certin times even then, and as a freshman of sophmore, you will get to register last and those types of classes fill up fast.

2nd with psu junior inquiry is 3 classes from a simular teaching, like asian studys or family councling whatever, whatever, what you do is figure out what you want for a minor and use that to pick classes for your inquiry that count for your minor.

I picked asian studys, took japanese lit 1 and 2, and thru film and drama, and it all counted toward my japanese minor, i didnt even need to take one japanese language class (I have but it needs to be level 300+ to count for minor/major and that is hard japanese espsualy the way psu teachs it :P)

If you want done in 3 years, you better take a minimum of 15 credits Fall, Winter and Spring, and cut back to 8-12 for the Summer.

Good Luck

Lily, this isn't my direct area of expertise, but as a design professional, I'd recommend PNCA, Rhode Island School of Design, and Cal Arts. Also, Totemo, you're way too smart for PSU (I should know, I got a masters from that lousy third-rate community college calling itself a university). You should transfer to one of the above when you've got a year or two worth of credits racked up.

Well I don't know too much about it, but there is always the Portland Art Institute. And I'm sure they take financial aide just like all other post-highschool organizations.

And I go to PSU, haven't thought it was too terrible, but maybe I am just focusing on a different degree and classes, who knows.

it isn't really, just make sure that you pick a pair of majors that have lots of the same requirements.  You'll have to talk to the different departments to find out which ones fit.

I dont think it is super hard but you need to plan out everything really well,
chris almost had a double major but he missed a year of a class that was required so he diddn't get the second major

Having just graduated from PSU, full time "depends." Some services require 9 credit hours to be "full time" but for fin-aid and similar subjects 12 is the minimum standing for full time.

The DARS report will be your friend. From right now, this very instant (if you're registered) go run a report for each major you want. Print out the results and take it to each advisor for the respective program. They'll both go through and figure out what credits can be used incestuously so your ultimate output will likely vary from the normal bluesheets/greensheets/plaidsheets the different colleges use to map out their 4 year programs.

If this is your first time going to college, I would advise wasting a few terms at Portland Comm' College. Going here will be cheaper and makes for a better transition to a real college (PCC is effectively high-school plus). You can knock out many of your gen-ed requirements that would otherwise be offered as one-shots by PSU. The only warning I give about PCC is that they will try to sink you into their own programs which do not translate to PSU usually (classes will, programs will not).

AIM me if you have more questions.

I'm attending PSU and its been my first year and currently, I'm taking 14 credits. Totemo, if you're planning on a minor in Japanese, just know that their program is horribly put together. I was warned about this a few years ago but I ignored it and now... yeah. The only reason I'm still in it is so that I can study abroad later. Oh, and I'd look into your Freshman inquiry teacher, because I'm stuck with one who has three papers due every single class period, while my friend does absolutely nothing for the same amount of credits... then again, she's probably not getting much out of it. Other than that, if either of you plan on working towards a BA of arts, I recommend taking Skelton's theater appreciation for your theater arts credit and Cowan's linguistics, but that's not offered every term.

Hhhhhmmm I never really realized how many of you guys attended PSU xD
We should all hangout one of these days, eh?

If you want to be lawl ler then you want political science to be your major.

To employers though, buisness and marketing is more or less the same thing.  I wouldn't waste time with the double major, if both is important then get a BS in one and MS in the other.

PCC is cheaper and more user friendly 80% of students that transfer out of PCC goto PSU so they have a dual enrollment program.  I think you'll find some of the required classes at PSU horribly cramped and the teachers somewhat apathetic.
