New Miyazaki film
« on: July 17, 2008, 02:02:40 am »
Hayao Miyazaki is coming out with another new film titled "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea", the first one to be done in pencil since he created "Princess Mononoke".  Here's the link:  http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080717/en_afp/entertainmentjapanfilmanimation;_ylt=AlNn9AFUePhTTjQmCGzk9lldDxkF

That's wonderful news! After having it pointed out to me in the article, I do notice a very strong difference between the style of Princess Mononoke and everything afterward. I loved the animation of PM, and to know that was done in pencil is amazing. To read that this new film has Miyazaki returning to pencil animation is nothing short of delightful. I already loved the story of the Little Mermaid, so this is a very exciting film for me. ^_^

I'm sad to say I've never watched one of his films completely through, I've seen bits and pieces of both "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Princess Mononoke".  I do plan on watching them all eventually though.

The clips I've seen of this so far make it look very cute but very weird.

Like a cross between Finding Nemo and My Neighbor Totoro.

Tom, I love your description.  It actually makes me want to watch it that much more, as I loved both of the aforementioned videos (what I've seen of the second one, that is).

I agree, what's going on with that, anyway? I'm looking for a job which coincidentally gives me open days all week long. We should meet up again. ^_^

That's a good idea. I may be out in Hood River, but if I'm not, I will probably be there.

I was lucky enough to watch this movie during my stay in Japan (on opening day, July 19, no less!). My host family was super awesome and took me. It was adorable, I hope it comes to America soon. :)

Wow, that looks....really weird. It doesn't really look anything like a Ghibli film, from the poster anyway. I'm still excited to see it someday though.

It is but not with subtitles yet.

Subtitles are available now http://www.mininova.org/tor/1794174 as well as a screening of the film http://www.mininova.org/tor/1684807.  These links are for the mininova tracker.  There are other links on other trackers as well.

I have downloaded it and plan to watch it tonight.  Was verifying that the subs worked OK, looks like a really cute show.  Has some of the Howls, Totoro, and Kiki feel to it. Anyone interested in a Eugene screening this Friday during my usual Anime Friday?  Maybe I can throw in the Death Note 2 - Live action movie as well.  Pretty weird double feature, but awfully hard to resist.

Any takers?

Hmm...  Had a FREE SCREENING of Ponyo at my place last Friday and not a single person came.  Nor did I get a single reply to the post above this one.  What's with that?  Maybe you guys/gals are only interested in seeing this if you have to pay for it?  I can charge you if you want. ;D

I also have Earthsea, and all of the other Ghibli works.

Anime Friday, come watch anime at my place every Friday Night at 7:00pm.

I saw a picture of this on the Studio Ghibli website a few months ago. Since my Japanese is not-so-good, I had no idea what it was- and now I know! It looks really cute!

Here's to another Studio Ghibli classic ^_^.
