Button Suggestions!
« on: August 18, 2008, 01:37:32 pm »
Okay, last year and at SakuraCon, my table sells primarily my Otaku Survival Guide zines and buttons.

This is your chance to make some suggestions on what you'd like to see button wise!

Ours are 1 1/4 inches.  We added some more Phoenix Wright for SC, and a lot more text buttons for AX, but what other kinds would you like to see?

As a refresher in our wares, we currently have Disgaea, TMNT, Phoenix Wright (10 different designs right now), Pokemon/Team Rocket, Excel Saga, Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter, and  a lot of 4chan jokes and mems, along with now some dating buttons and of course the ever needed "I love Yaoi."

So what else would like you to see?  Phoenix Wright characters you feel get neglected?  Slayers? Text buttons?  More of a show that we already have buttons for (our Excel Saga buttons are down to only having Hyatt died for your sins available now)

Since its hard to do commission at con, since its all digital, now is the time make some suggestions that you'd like to see.

Our current buttons are here - http://otakusurvivalguide.com/mastersheetbuttons.pdf

Buttons sold at $1.50

Oh, and the artist will not draw furries.  Don't even try to ask, you'll be glared down so fast you won't know what hit you.

Could you post some pics of your buttons? I'm potentially interested in commissioning some genderbend TMoHS buttons ;D

Okay, I need to amend the previous post (but the message board doesn't want to let me right now -_-)- I just talked to the artist (I'm business and text button end of things) and she actually doesn't have any time any more for specific commissions before the convention.  Summer session finals and work and all that fun stuff.

I will add the gender bender Haruhi people to our list of possible subjects. Of course, she always reserves the right not to do stuff  (which I think is why she doesn't to take actual commissions right now. She's one of those "inspiration strikes" kind of artists).

Aw, I would have loved to seen The World Ends With You buttons, like these: http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff255/Konoechan/pinchartparte2copia.jpg

But asking when they said no is rude, so thanks at least for telling us!  :D I'll check out your other buttons anyway, because they do look awesome!

I'm not sure what you mean CatchxMe?   We are doing new buttons for the con, and we want suggestions, we just aren't doing any "take your money upfront and promise that button will be there" straight out commissions.  So this is more of a "Let us know what you'd like to see and we'll try..." kind of thing right now. Sorry if I confused you on that.

... Which one is the World Ends With You button, or do you mean that style of button in general..

Edit: Nevermind, I just was smart and googled The World Ends With You.  Looks cool. I'll see if the artist news anything about that game, I know she hasn't played it though.

Oh, I'm an idiot, I thought you weren't taking any more suggestions! Sorry! XD And the one's that would get the most popularity of The World Ends With You would be these:

http://i23.ebayimg.com/06/i/001/01/7c/a3c8_1.JPG

In the game, the weapons are buttons, so that's why. The bottons above are the starters...so yeah.  :D Sorry for the trouble! XD

Huh, interesting! I'll look more into that and add it our list. I've also had suggested that I should look into the Reborn badges and think about doing those as buttons. I've barely even heard of this game, but it looks cool. If only I had a ds ;_;

When it comes to stuff like that though, just taking images from the game/show, where you can't really add any creativity of your own, I'm always a little more hesitant.  But thats on my list now!

Sometimes we make custom buttons... The artist is pretty busy right now though, so we're just doing buttons to sell at the table (unless you want a text button, I can do those custom myself).

My suggestion is to make your suggestions on what you'd like to see, and we'll see if we get those made.  Otherwise, you can talk to the artists at con about commissions.

You can PM me if you want to let me know what you were thinking about.

Loving the Desu Note one.  And the many, many PW ones.

If you made a button that jus said DESU in big letters with the DE and SU being different colors, that'd be awfully cool...

Question.  And I don't know how to phrase this, so bear with me.  Some "fan" buttons I've seen have been much higher quality than others... Sometimes the printer, things like that.  One thing I've seen is the picture is almost like a sticker, printed right from the computer on what seems like regular printer paper, but, you know, sticking to the metal.  Other times there's a nice, smooth plastic part over the image (or maybe it's the image itself, I'm not sure).  What's the texture of the buttons you guys make?
lol peer pressure

Plans:
Kumoricon '11: Catherine (Catherine), Nanami (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
Sakuracon '12: Ryfia (Arc Rise Fantasia), other things

Hmm, I don't know about those sticker ones... Ours have a clear plastic cover, plus I do all my printing at Kinkos, so they show up very sharp and the colors are great.  Switching to Kinkos instead of my home printer made a lot of difference.

Also, the quality of the button machine will make a difference.  The machines that make a lot of different sizes usually rely on you creating most of the pressure to seal the button, where as mine only makes once size, but its mostly done by the machine, so its pretty much always perfect (the other kind, I've noticed rippling in the plastic and it not always smoothly fitting into the metal.)

Yeah, I spent a while researching before I got my machine, because I've seen some pretty shody buttons before. At no fault the the artists, just that the machine wasn't doing the best job.

Why the bias against furries?
We have a panel in the Creation Station: From Anime to Anthro, which helps folks learn how to draw furries.

Meantime I saw someone at a video store with a button: I'm with the Muggle.

... Don't get heather started on Furries.  Yeah. Personally, I'm not too thrilled with them either. Too many bad personal experiences.  Catgirls are one thing.. but yeah. People we've both known.

Nice.  Yeah, harry potter buttons are what first inspired us to make buttons, but we haven't done any HP, just anime.

I think you're thinking of the fetishists? Whereas kasa and I are thinking of the people who draw characters who are more like shapeshifters or halfbreeds?

yes, and no.... unfortunately, in my experience, there isn't that big of a difference. Like, fan girls who decided to draw roy and ed as yaoi catboys, are pretty creepy in their own way.

Its kind of one of those things where sure, there are sane fans of it I'm sure, but they aren't the ones drawing meowth/ash porn. And you only see the loud ones.

But also, its just one of those things the artist won't draw, so I figure I might as well say it up front.

I am going to put myself out on a limb here.  What classification does Sonic the Hedgehog fall into?  The Silver mascot at the last KumoriCon was my daughter.  Many people would place anyone in a mascot costume that isn't human as "furry".  Of course Sonic and the whole Sega line of characters Tails, Rouge, Shadow, Ami, Knuckles, are anthro in nature.  Also, if you want to get technical, Mickey, Donald, and Goofey. are also furry characters.  I respect the artists choice to not draw furry, but I question the reason behind it.  Walt Disney was basiclly the first "furry" artist.  He was the one that got my wife interested in the anthropomorphic style of art.  WB took over with Tom & Jerry, Hucklberry Hound, SnagglePuss, and many others.  Many characters in todays cartoon industry are "furry"  The Warner kids on Animaniacs, Lola Bunny, Babs and Buster, Pinky and Brain, Rescue Rangers, Tailspin, Ducktails, etc.  This is the realm I am coming from.  It is the realm I grew up with.  A lot of "furries" feel the same way.  They just like the characters and style of art.  There is a whole lot of fan fiction based on these shows.  It is unfortunate that the TV show CSI had to have that one episode that totally gave everyone a bad view of "furries".  I see from your earlier posts that you and the artist have had your own bad relations with "furries".  That is unfortunate.  I have had some bad relations with anime fans.  Doesn't mean I don't go to the conventions or watch anime.  I just don't want to be given a label and set aside because of what someone else may have done.  Rant over

I got it online, though I no longer know where I got it through.  But when Kumoricon got theirs, they got it through this site - http://stores.americanbuttonmachines.com/Detail.bok?no=44, and that's the machine and cutter I like.  A little pricey, but its a very solid machine.

I like to separate Furry-style art from Furry lifestyle. Every fandom has it's problems and weirdos, so please remember that when making statements about them. Not every who likes Furry Art/ Anthro Art are into the lifestyle, and not every "furry" (meaning the people themselves) are terrible. So please, try not to be so openly hostile against it, it's kind of a put off for possible customers. Having such a negative outlook because of some experiences isn't reason enough to be so hateful. I've run into a few bad ones myself, but I've also met some who were really cool. But hey, if the artist won't draw them, they're welcome to look elsewhere ;) because I know me and my table-mate can handle it!

Just try to tone down the negativity.

Agreed. I know if I have a bad furry experience than I would blame the person acting on a negative/inapropriate steriotype not the idea of furrys all together.
