last year at Kcon, a couple of people and myself had a tournament of sorts (we only had like... 6 people) and we did what was duely named Kakashi-sensei's Kunai in the Tree Tournament. we would take plastic or metal kunai, and see who could stick it highest in a tree. so we had a little competition and the winner got a Naruto action figure from the dealers room. so, i was thinking that if we could find a suitable place in the park, that we could schedule a time to do this shindig. it's not Naruto cosplay exclusive, so it would be awesome to see a bunch of people do it. i'll bring the action figure i won last year and give it to whomever wins (though i'll also compete. ;]) if anyone is up for it, let me know and we'll get it done! XD

ha ha! running up trees isn't as hard as it sounds, and everyone is welcome to join. and if you don't wanna for fear of ruining your cosplay, that's totally understandable.

I'm not sure if the hotel would like it too much. They got sort of pissed off the last time we were there and some people did mock-combat in the park, despite it not being on their property . . .

Not at the Double Tree! Last year was in Vancouver. The last time we were at this exact same hotel the hotel people got really made and made a ton of us, even when we weren't involved, put our props away.

It's in the public park across the way, so they don't have juristiction. And if they send someone out to stop you, then turn to them and say "Do you really wanna tell the ninja with the knife what to do?"

well, if it's out of their jurisdiction, they can't really enforce anything can they? i remember something like that happened at Sakuracon, where people had live steel but they were in the park next door, and con policy doesn't extend that far. and if it's as simple as sticking a plastic/possibly metal kunai in a tree, i can't understand why we would be killed. lol

Thats dumb, Mike may be good but you don't need to be negeative. I mean a lot of us havn't played this but I used to climb trees all the time and I try to run up trees with my friends too to see how far we can go. My upperbody strength isn't that great but I think I can push a kunai into a tree
We arn't all the same people from last years game and we all should get a chance without hearing how none of us can beat Mike

ha ha! seriously. i agree with you completely. it's not that big of a deal to begin with. i'm sure loads of people are better than i am anyways. it's just a game, and it's meant to be fun. XD
but yeah, TheInsanePuck brought up a good point. yojimbo aside, does any one else see the police as a potential problem? i'm not very familiar with the portland area and it's law enforcement, so i'm at a bit of a loss on this one.

Yup sounds like a great way to get the cops called on you and brought to the con, which the con would ot apreshate and possibly get banned for life from con and yes that DOES happen

Doing this in a city park equals you in handcuffs and maybe back of squad car

now I aint sayin this to be a nay sayer and or a a$$ but come on people lets try to use some common sense how do you think a cop would see this (and as a guy studying to be a cop I think I might be spot on)

person running up a tree and marking it with a sharp potentialy deadly object if not a chance of someone doing bodily harm to themselves and or others... likely hood of arresting the person very high... lightest situation is you get a hefty fine so yeah

yeah dude. i totally agree with you, and you make a great point. i'm not trying to downplay the seriousness of flailing sharp objects, but the kunai we would be using would be plastic. you can buy them in the dealers hall. we used plastic ones last year, and stuck it into the tree, with no slashing whatsoever. the point on the kunai are probably only capable of giving someone the equivalent of a papercut... if that. and of course the tree had very soft, somewhat crumbly bark, so it didn't really do any horrendous damage.
like i said, great point, but the whole idea isn't as potentially dangerous as one might think. >.>

Here's a response to all of this. Technically we can't do a thing about it, however, please be advised that you can get arrested by the Portland Police. Such behavior also reflects extremely poorly upon the convention (especially if you get in trouble with the cops), and could have consequences that would not be favorable to you. If they are plastic kunai you can have them in con space. If they are metal we will have to treat them the same as live steel/stage steel. Meaning you cannot have them on you due to con rules.

yes. i do realize that having the police involved in any way, shape, or form is not favorable by any means. and having as much dissent of this gravity, and despite the apparent innocence of the game, it's probably better to just scrap the idea. thank you, everyone, for your input and we'll see if we can't organize something like this at a later date (without the cops ;])!
