Classical Music Anyone?
« on: August 21, 2008, 12:39:36 pm »
So despite me being mostly a metal-head I absolutely adore classical music, epically the cello. My favorite piece is Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 (Prelude; Sarabande).

And I was just wondering who else here enjoyed classical.

I'm a fan of classical music, playing the flute and such. I'm too lazy to go ahead and think of the name right now, but classical music deserves a 'Syd Stamp of Approval'.

The only winner in the War of 1812 was Tchaikovsky.

I don't play any particular classical instrument, but I also love Classical music. I don't have a ton of it that I know of, but some of my favorites are Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata",  Handel's "Messiah - Overture", and the entire Nutcracker Suite. I, too, really like the cello. It's a beautiful instrument, no doubt about that.

I love Classical, it's actually my favorite genre of music. ^^ Just listening to it makes me feel calm and relaxed...and I love the different kinds of music that can be made by instrument alone.

My wife is a classical Violinist and has been playing since she was 3. So yeah she likes classical music, I like it too after nine years of marriage. I like the four seasons by Vivaldi

Recently I've really been into the Czecks, like Liszt and Dvorak.

Haven't listened to a ton of Classical music lately, but I've been playing a lot of Neoclassical and listening to a lot of post-movement neoclassical interpretations.  I've actually grown to prefer Celtic Folk over other genres.

Ooh, so Pi's a Lisztomaniac! Yeah, he had groupies. No, not Pi. Or does Pi too? dunno.

Did you watch the OPB broadcast of VanBeethoven's Eroica last night? Cool stuff, even if they kept talking through the music. hmmm, didn't that used to be considered rude behavior?

Likewise; it's just not mainstream enough for me to be able to take the time to unlearn qwerty when I'll wind up having to use it any time I'm using a computer on campus, and the fact that my phone has a qwerty keyboard would further complicate switching to Devorak.

btw

this is off topic.

Is Warner Brothers Bugs Bunny Classical still considered classical, or has it been downgraded by the elites, so as to keep the rif-raff out? Personally I would have liked to have gone to the symphony with my mom when I was young, a whole lot better if they had something I had ever heard before.

I think that toons is where I picked up most of my classical as well Jay.  Got to thank Disney and the WB for that.  My wife was 1st chair violin in high school.  (She was the actual fiddler, for Fiddler on the Roof), and my daughter played violin through most of elementary school, she switched to flute in Jr. High because they didn't have an orchestra.  Ditto for High School.  Grumble, Grumble.  >:(

I like many orchestral pieces, and like orchestra in rock or pop music.  I still think that Europe - The Final Countdown is one of my favorite pieces, just because of the opening, despite the fact that it is a synthesized orchestra.  I also enjoy listening to Gustav Holst - The Planets. For some reason I keep thinking of Star Wars while listening to it.  :P  I am actually more into Easy Listening and New Age music.  I think anyone who has listened to Yanni - Live at the Acropolis would have a hard time saying that it isn't orchestral.  And if you want violin, listen to this piece from Yanni - Within Attraction (Live! at the Acropolis) .  Start it at around 5:15 if you don't want to hear the whole thing.  Devil Came Down to Georgia has nothing on this violin battle between Karen Briggs and Shahrdad Rohani!  And the winner is......Karen Briggs

Don't forget all the use of orchestras by the Moody Blues in their works!

Cartoons use a lot of classical music because of expired copyrights.  It's a lot cheaper than having someone compose for you and paying them royalties.

Franz Schubert, my favourite composer. Serenade is my favourite piece. Terry Wey sings it beautifully.

I've been listening to Gustav Holst's "The Planets" today. It's quiet an exciting selection.

Yea!  Another fan of Holst.  Do you also have Star Wars deja vu?
