Google Chrome (Google's Web Browser) is now out!
« on: September 02, 2008, 12:23:57 pm »
Yup! It got released just a couple of hours ago and it is so far fantastic! It has better memory management soposidly, which will be good for low-powered PCs. It's still in Beta so it doesn't have some of the great features of Firefox 3 that I enjoy, but it's a great start!

You can go ahead and download it from here = http://www.google.com/chrome

I have tried it out some myself. It's definitely interesting. I'm still getting used to it a bit. But knowing google by the time they put an official release out I think it will be a solid item.

I thought it was neat .. but the fact that the original EULA (now fixed) claimed ownership of everything you created while using the browser made me scared.  Yes, they say it "accidentally" got put in there and is now removed (only after a huge firestorm of controversy). Apparently, they just "copied" the EULA from other projects they were working and, "oops" that section got added.

I don't know if I buy it, and frankly it's scary.

Well, I can understand how something like that would slip in. I mean it is a beta after all, and by no means finished. If they said they changed it, and I'm assuming people have verified that it has, then I wouldn't worry.

I can guarantee that when it becomes official, at least some people will be checking for that exact same thing, and seeing if they tried to slip it back in. I don't think google is stupid enough to try something like that, because that would put in huge dent in their reputation in my opinion.

Unfortunately, Google already has dents in their reputation because of privacy issues, but it doesn't necessarily result in change.

One thing I have a problem with is how their EULAs for their services allow them to give out personal, private user data in response to any government request.

The EULA should bind Google to only releasing information when they, themselves, are legally required to give it. So, for example, a court order, subpoena, warrant, etc.

Someone at work was reading the fine print carefully and it said they can do more or less whatever they want with whatever you do with chrome and it'll always update itself if you want it to or not.

I'm a little sketch, also, because each tab has it's own OS it is a memory hog.

I guess I'm lucky and my system doesn't run up against any resource issues, so it's not something I bother to look at. But in some cases I can see why that would be a problem for other people.
